In reply to: Easy Way to Make Friends with Everyone?
We don’t use the friends feature at all and that works fine. It’s a small community and we’ve got no need for it at the moment.
In reply to: Is this the way Forums are supposed to work?WIth the new theme for 1.2 I think that the forums are very secondary to the “what’s new”-box for the personal profile and groups.
If “what’s new”-messages in the activty feed at the frontpage and groups would appear at the top of the list when commented, there’d be no use of the forums at all.
If you’d be able to tinyMCE or attach files to the “what new”-input you’d be another step away from having the forum component.
I guess BP is made for thousands of users. But those of us having about 1000 registered users at the very most (and about 1/5 active of them) will have to make lesser avenues for the users (no blogs, no forums, only personal and groups “whats new”/status update) so that the activity isn’t diluted.
In reply to: New BuddyPress 1.2 default themeLovely!
I like what I see. Much more Facebooky.
The main thing is that the userbar/optionsbar is no longer vertical. It’s a huge improvement for me! Now I won’t have to edit that much of the code.
In reply to: Activity Commenting“2. In the test-group: http://testbp.org/groups/buddypress-testers-614548248 there are interesting discussions. One is about “feeding back” the comments to the original source (Blog-Post, etc) and one about the topic if the forums still make sense with that kind of activity-stream. Check it out and get involved in the discussion here – I think those are very important topics!
My answer is: As simple as possible for the end-user. Merge as much as you can!”
I’d also like to see merging. If not, there will be comments to forumposts that are lost in the clutter of comments everywhere.
I’d rebuild it from ground up with some WP-theme that you like and that looks similar to the one you use now.
I used the P2-theme and modified it to my liking. There’s lot to be done with my custom made theme. But it’s not impossible if you’ve got enough knowledge to make the original 1.0-theme like you seem to have done.
From the codex:
“If you decide that you’d like to change something in a template file, just copy the file from /bp-sn-parent/ and paste it into your theme. This file in your theme will now override the one in /bp-sn-parent/. Again, you should never edit any files in /bp-sn-parent/.”
So paste all that inside a working WP theme and then make the custom CSS that you need.
In reply to: Buddypress on all but Root BlogThanks a lot Scotm! I had problems with having this work but now it does!
What version of WPMU is it?
In reply to: Buddypress on all but Root Blog@ Andy:
I’ve tried to do just this before but then the BP-forums (www.website.com/forums) wouldn’t display correctly. It seemed like the primary blog had to have a theme from which it could get the forum theming.
In reply to: Question about theme for forums directory, 1.1.I never solved this and others seem to have the same kind of problem. I’ll try to rework the whole website so that I don’t need a primary blog.
In reply to: Question about theme for forums directory, 1.1.1. Which version of WPMU are you running?
The latest. 2.8.4.a
2. Did you install WPMU as a directory or subdomain install?
Directory
3. If a directory install, is it in root or in a subdirectory?
Root

No, the latest.
5. Was WPMU functioning properly before installing/upgrading BuddyPress?
Works okay.
6. Which version of BuddyPress (BP) are you running?

Yes, they don’t interfere with the problem above although.
9. Are you using the standard BuddyPress themes or customized themes?
Customized.
10. Have you modified the core files in any way?
No.
11. Do you have any custom functions in bp-custom.php?

#1 – I’ve had problems with things not showing up. In what folder have you put your BP-theme?
In reply to: Question about theme for forums directory, 1.1.Perhaps that’s a similar problem. But your directory page shows (as far as I understand) and mine doesn’t.
In reply to: No bbpress Forum link in GroupsI’m not sure I understand what setup you’ve got. Are you using BP 1.1 and also deep integration with bbPress?
What linking is it that you want?
In short – I don’t know of any linking between forums in groups and the “external” bbPress forums (with deep integration). If that’s what you’re asking?
In reply to: [Resolved] forcing users to login from the root@ jazgold
This is just what I was looking for. Or something like it. But I want to have a splash-page for the non-registered (so that they can get some info on how to register, etc). Is it possible to create a splash-page with this solution?
I’ve put all my website as private. You can make that happen. But then you won’t get any traffic from google. It’s all a matter of how private you want it to be.
In reply to: Codex?I’ve had the same problem. Changing browsers sometimes helped when FF never worked.
In reply to: No links to BP from WP workHah! I finally found what was wrong!
It’s not possible to use a secondary blog as the “material/theme” for Buddypress. At least not for the forums. It has to be the primary blog (that has incorporated BP).
Changing which blog that is this on bb-config.php doesn’t help.
$bb->wordpress_mu_primary_blog_id = 2;Well, now I at least know why I had my problems.
In reply to: No links to BP from WP workOh, it seems it was only me that was the bug.

I didn’t have the theme-files in the proper place. I still can’t find root/forums but I guess I’ve done something wrong there also.
With Andy’s change in WP 2.9, regarding where the themes should be, I guess this will be an error of the past.
In reply to: Extending WordPress Themes – Post ExperiencesI did it with P2 and an Artisteer-theme. It’s pretty much finished.
Just integrated as per codex instructions (copied all the folders and some files from BP-theme).
1. I called for another CSS in the header instead of in the actuall css file. Had problems with the latter.
2. Didn’t register userbar/optionsbar. Integrated them into navbar or individual pages (all user settings was placed on “profile”). This wasn’t intended at first but was a great way of handling the horizontal space problem. P2 and my theme are intended for a width of about 900px. Without the vertical userbar/optionsbar you can make it fit into that small space.
3. I made all the content fit by handling the CSS item “content” with a good width and overflow.
4. This however made me have problems with the sidebar widgets that are hardcoded (please make them into widgets instead). I had to rip them out because they disturbed the layout.
5. Had to do some additional skinning and handle a fixed amount of categories for the forums.
I just love how components.css did a lot of the work. Thanks a lot Andy!
In reply to: Embedding in forums and site wide activityDo you mean that perhaps a youtube video would show in the “site wide activity”?
In reply to: Blank page after changing permalinks ?Have you tried 1.1?
I’d say that the most important factor for me is that Andy P is an employee at Automattic. That means BP has got support from Automattic and the blessings needed to have a safe relationship between WP and BP. WP is extremely strong and BP should stand nicely in that giants shoulders.
That’s one of the things that made my decision.
In reply to: Got banned after asking a simple question?I was also “banned”/ got a closed account some time ago. I was new. I created a new account and then kept asking questions that were relevant to me. They’re doing a very good job at the moment even if there are times we’re I’d like more answers/help. It’s for free…
In reply to: Forums not workingHave you taken the step in the Buddypress adminbar [general settings] [component setup] [forums setup]. The last one, and created the forums?
How exactly do you implement this in a new theme:
<?php if ( !bp_is_blog_page() && !bp_is_directory() && !bp_is_register_page() && !bp_is_activation_page() ) : ?>That’s the only thing that I’m guessing could be wrong.
