In reply to: BuddyPress 1.8.1 and Multisite
ok well I’m just trying to tell you that as far as i’m aware the feature you are waiting for is not on the roadmap, if you’d like to lobby for it i would suggest attending today’s devchat or one in the future.
In reply to: BuddyPress 1.8.1 and Multisitei wouldn’t hold your breath, buddypress does and is meant to be fully multisite compatible and has a bunch of multisite functionality but it is not intended for for each site in network to have it’s own separate social network. Activity is picked up network wide but the idea is that the primary site is where all the single social network aspects are displayed. What you are trying to do is not really a single network at all, at least if you’re asking me.
In reply to: BuddyPress 1.8.1 and Multisitebuddypress has always been multisite compatible and in fact at certain point required wmpu but the way you are trying to use it is not recommended but there is a method i’m not sure how it’s done can’t seem to dig up the exact thing. but another thing which might be able to achieve what you want is using multi-network. maybe one of these will help.
In reply to: Server Requirements (SW & HW)it’s more about how many people will be using your site at any given time if you have buddypress and especially if your theme is displaying buddypress info on most of your pages then you will almost certainly need vps to be happy with your load times.
In reply to: BuddyPress won’t installyou can download the zip file extract it then upload via ftp to your plugins folder.
In reply to: Buddypress example website / PressWell i think you have some competition already but there’s certainly nothing wrong with a new outfit trying to help promote what can be done with wordpress/buddypress so i think you would be welcomed in that endeavor. Not sure i have a good answer for that last one maybe sites like yours? If your site becomes popular and effective enough perhaps even more mainstream sites? i hear there is a new wordpress focused media outfit at torquemag.io maybe they have some interest?
In reply to: Removing members tab kills linkswait so you saying that when you take the menu item out in appearance > menus it effects your wp adimn bar?
if the theme is showing all pages you might be able to just delete the page but i’m not sure if that would break buddypress or not.
In reply to: Removing members tab kills linkshow exactly did you “get rid of” the members tab?
In reply to: Custom Blog Page for each membersalso you could make the default wp role author rather then subscriber if you were thinking along the lines of regular posting authority.
there’s probably a term you can swap for
is_site_admin()but i don’t know what it is, sorry. In reply to: New blog posts doesnt show in activity streami believe these are all supposed to be on by default but the default active components has changed recently i can’t seem to dig up which ones they are. anyway go to the buddypress section under settings and tab over to components to ensure the activity tracking is enabled.
In reply to: Activation Code Issuewell I’m pretty sure the number is in the email at the end of the link they click. pretty sure i have manually entered it once or twice
In reply to: How can I promote a member to an admin?set their forum role to keymaster in your users list or directly from the wp admin profile edit screen.
In reply to: i cannot see my plugins in my sitesounds like maybe you network activated the plugins in question? if so those plugins will not normally show up in the individual sites plugin list.
In reply to: Question about Hosting?Depends on your traffic levels but probably you want to get off of shared hosting and move to at least vps. If you had multisite, you’d know it believe me upgrading to that is not typically difficult but i would move your hosting first. Personally i would never use windows hosting for wordpress (or any other time i had a choice).
In reply to: [Resolved] notices/announcementssupposed to show up in the sidebar area.
In reply to: Tranfering / Moving Domain Nameyeah the hostile trick is a good way to “trick” your computer thinking a domain exists somewhere its doesn’t thus allowing you to not need to change the domain in the first place. that being said as Hugo mentions the codex pages tend to try to address the entire learning curve of any particular process meaning that they are giving you a bunch of options on that page you don’t need to be able to follow the entire thing to employ one of the listed techniques.
Another thing you may want to consider (depending on the amount of content your site will have prior to going public) is to simply build out on a dummy domain then reconstruct on a fresh install as soon as you are able to grab the domain. Regular wordpress content can even be exported from the construction site and then imported into the new site. Unfortunately no such process exists for buddypress data (groups, non post creating users and activity) but generally speaking those things shouldn’t take all that long to recreate unless your community section is going to be gigantic.
In reply to: Tranfering / Moving Domain Nameall of that is handled by the wordpress side of things, buddypress shouldn’t have any trouble handling a domain change. obviously any permalinks would change however.
i’d ask @jjj about it.
@synaptic I can see your post for what that’s worth also thanks for the link neat tool!
as far as why other sites are doing things the way they are we are making a bunch of assumptions right off the bat but from outside appearances the site you mentioned does not appear to be using buddypress. often times the forum/community software is a different platform from wordpress this is not the case with buddypress, that might explain why some other site would be compartmentalizing their community sections.
the only reason to use multisite is to create totally separate blogs/sites under one network setting. if you do not want to create (or let your users create) other sub-sites then chances you want to go multi are not great. You can also switch to that later if you choose (i had buddypress on a site for over two years before i took it multi).
once you go multi, new users are actually added to the network first they may then be added to a particular site either when you as either super admin or one of your sub-site admins manually adds them to a site or automatically based on activity i believe, that part still baffles me a bit honestly.
@synaptic i’ve noticed that sometimes there is a lag with forum posts showing up.
@richardicanie buddypress is designed to be fully integrated with your primary wordpress installation. If you are using multisite then you would network activate buddypress. Be advised that although the various sub sites are part of the buddypress integration for the most part their activity shows up only on the primary site of your network (widgets and possibly themes can still access and display the network wide bp activity).
In reply to: Untraceable spam usergetting hacked is a little bit like getting pregnant, theres no such thing as just a little bit. if they got in they have all of your access information, more then likely.
if i knew that a crook that had already proven interested in breaking into my house and had stolen my keys the very least i would do is to change the locks.
just saying…
In reply to: Untraceable spam userfyi if your site has been hacked even on a low level you must clean it out and change all the associated admin and database passwords or you will be letting them right back in.
In reply to: Untraceable spam userits still a bad sign that base 64 stuff is usually a sign of a open door that has been used to hack your site.
