like I mentioned in my first reply when this thread came out – “quick chat” works great as a basic “text chat” plugin with my buddypress sites. It’s free, and in the wp -repo – maybe if I provided a direct link -> https://wordpress.org/plugins/quick-chat/
many backend options, can display your avatars and everything. It rocks.
( I always turn off the feature that has it show up on every page of the site – I think it’s better on server resources and page speed to just have the group chat room on a static page)
Of course I still suggest reading up on the other discussions for details about other systems.
as far as using skype for your site, I think that is a short sighted choice – no privacy, no control, dependent upon third parties… I went down that road once, and not getting into that dependency again.
