In reply to: Question about Forums vs. Groups
You can do as rich! has suggested effectively removing the posting form, but also you can do things like set the group home page to be the forum tab rather than the general ‘all which has happened in one big hit’ page, it can help in this way users are dropped into the forum section straight off
In reply to: Question about Forums vs. GroupsUpdates Vs Forums? it’s a tricky one, I too want to encourage discussions and tend to find that users will post an update when in reality it would have been far better made as a forum topic or would it? Users can comment on updates made and in a threaded manner so there is a logical grouping of responses.
This is a tricky area, I find users don’t really understand what an update is, they also fail to realise that when someone makes an update that they should respond to it as a ‘reply’ I have people posting an update referencing another update completely and immediately suffer a disconect between bits of content that should be locked together.
In reply to: How to get users to post blogsslightly confused by the request. WP 3.0 has the capability to allow user blogs as either sub domains or directories, would that achieve your request? failing that you can always set users as ‘Authors’ on the main blog which would allow them to create posts. Simply creating a page and naming it what you like will do nothing as that is simply a ‘Page’ on the main blog and requires content added via the dashboard when you create that page or content/scripting added directly to a file named as that page and set as a template.
Thanks for updating r-a-y. I wonder what the actual solution is as JJJ has just firmed up the hack?.
@arunbaaillal that solution does work but only by dint of the fact that this what you can always do with WP, state a template page to be used as front. do you not think it would be better to add the patch to your functions file then you would have a workaround that works for the moment quite satisfactorily.
In reply to: users complaining@gregfielding Your comments are apposite . I did start a thread (you may well have responded in it) trying to get thoughts like this expressed in one place in the hope that there could start to be a little greater community spirit and in the hope the lead/core developers could perhaps read and ask/answer questions from time to time – more interaction between core team and those actually trying to use the app in the wild, it was also meant as a check and balance to the thread started on the BP API as in that thread I saw the potential problem with BP being fundamentally mid tier heavy and lacking in input from front end developers and those that have a specific grasp of UI and Site Archetecture (yes I realise that the latter could be argued to be in the hands of those taking the app and building the sites, but not wholly so!) so your post above would have sat very well in that thread.
I was pretty amazed that something like the activity stream on front page issue could exist especially as it seems such a core part of WP/BP and not exactly hidden, and more it worries me that it’s left to kindly souls as r-a-y rich! and rvenable to try and find a solution and before anyone says it.. no it’s not a given that this is how projects work

To some extent if you are planning on rolling with BP there is little point in waiting for ever more and a day for a 100% stable release as there is unlikely to be such a thing for quite a while, it’s the nature of the methodology in use and for very reminiscent of the early days of WP. 1.2.4.1 and WP 3.0 is holding up pretty well yes there are issues but you’ll have to bite the bullet at some point

Well it would work
that is one of the methods to manipulating what appears as front page built into WP. The point to this thread was attempting to find a solution to the actual issue, ones meant to be able to set the activity stream from the backend but can’t, the thread arrives at a temporary solution to this.In reply to: Is bp dying a slow death?and there’s more to life than code
An inaccurate statement – Life is code!

Soccer?! what’s that? thought you were British born?.
There are clearly concerns as can be seen here and in other threads, while I appreciate pressure of work and the fact that you are perhaps not able to devote 100% of your time to BP, it’s vital that the core team are seen to be around – even if only from time to time – When one talks of Community it’s important to remember that communities have leaders and community members look to leaders for inspiration, guidance, reassurance; what can wreck a communities spirit is for it’s leaders to be perceived as not caring or concerned with other matters, or simply locked away in ivory towers, unapproachable. There has to to be the notion that the larger community is able to participate, to feedback concerns, that input does not fall on deaf ears.
@si you’ve added in a carriage return/line feed after the closing ?> or before it’s opening, anything that represents a character is interpreted as browser output. Ensure you have no whitespace after the closing php tags.
In reply to: How do I use buddypress?Buddypress runs as a plugin of a WordPress install, either WP single or WPMU / WP MS(WP 3.0)
If you have your WordPress install up and running then you need to upload or install via dashboard the BP plugin and activate, no further domain issues unless you have decided to run user blogs then you have considerations such as sub domains for the user blogs or sub directories and possible DNS issues if you want to use sub domains.
Ah erm so it does; did say it wasn’t hugely tested. Ok then those that are running on bp-default theme will need to add your function to main functions file, please ignore my well intentioned but erroneous post above. (Last para stands thinking about though, the flood gates will open soon)Thinking further it makes sense to add fix to main functions or
bp-custom[bp-custom.php isn’t a standard included file] so that it does get erased from existence on upgrade – one less thing to remember to adjust for people@r-a-y Thanks r-a-y that does indeed fix things, albeit in a hackish manner

I understand what you’ve done with it, and it occurred to me that there may well be an issue with many who are using bp-default and choosing or at least attempting to choose activity stream as front page, they will not be running a child theme?
I had a play around with the bp-default functions file and specifically the function: ‘bp_dtheme_page_on_front_template’ controlling this aspect, keeping your workaround in mind I simply adjusted the add_filter from:
add_filter( ‘page_template’, ‘bp_dtheme_page_on_front_template’ );
To:
add_filter( ‘404_template’, ‘bp_dtheme_page_on_front_template’ );
This appears to work correctly on one of my clean installs WP 3.0 BP 1.2.4.1 bp-default
Although this is adjusting core file, in the interim/short term until the correct solution is found would this not serve those that I mentioned above and when that correct solution found the hack would simply be overwritten in a point upgrade?
This isn’t a hugely tested solution, it works on the surface on one of my various installs, but there may well be issues I have missed, it’s suggested more as food for thought.
Lastly I can imagine that there are going to be many rushing into upgrading (that ‘upgrade now’ button is like the red ‘Do NOT Press’ button; too much of a temptation
) Although the upgrade is not problematical the few manual steps required might well cause some people issues and the fix discussed here be required so as such it might be worth a sticky post pulling the steps together along with any other fixes one might require, that people can be pointed to?Perplexing? lots of back slapping
on that link announcement yet 1.2.4 does not work particularly well with 3.0 or particularly badly (to be fair) Why? not necessarily criticizing just rather bemused by BP development and testing. In reply to: is there a how to guide anywhere?well work out how to encourage all those others to help?
Tech forums nearly always function around a core dedicated team that answer the majority of questions, a team that is often no more than a half dozen strong, 99% of forum users tend to be seeking help rather than trying to help, that’s just the way of things sadly, it was meant to be otherwise but the road web development has taken down the templated, copy ‘n’ paste, script snippet, library code has ensured that there are more people stuck at a a level of knowledge that they will not seek to escape.
In reply to: Update Buddypress then Fatal errorremove the plugin completely then, actually I thought it was called bp-twire?
Tweatstream is an option but not necessarily better, it has a fatal showstopper bug that to my knowledge hasn’t been resolved so for a few of us is not an option as it simply does not work!
In reply to: Is bp dying a slow death?Yep trouble is projects can’t just halt waiting on something else, WP 3.0 from beta 1 has appeared remarkably stable and each subsequent release has too, stable enough to base development on I would have thought, but you have a point it is, I guess, safer to know ones developing to a final stable release.
In reply to: Is bp dying a slow death?@rainman I think one of the concerns is that BP is – too an extent – not to be considered a hobby project , it’s backed by Automattic and they employ Andy, and as far as I’m aware – not that I know one way or another – to work on developing BP; however I’m sure he help out in general where needed on Automattic’s development projects?
In reply to: Is bp dying a slow death?I’m afraid I too have noticed this decline in activity from when I first started frequenting buddypress.org and it’s Trac last november-ish when it was to a degree a hive of activity and one did see the three core developers drop in on a fairly regular basis, they are now extremely noticeable in their absence. It’s a little worrying as The community aspect of open source projects is often held aloft like a torch but that torch needs to be kept burning (rubbish metaphor )
It’s always awkward when a company such as Automattic backs something like BP as many might see that as a seal of approval and a reassurance that the project will be kept firmly on track and supported (I certainly did and it helped cement our decision to go with BP) at the moment it does feel as though things are on the back burner when – with the imminent release of stable WP 3.0 – BP appears to be far from release of 1.3 judging by the backlog of Tickets to be resolved.
I would really love to hear from the core dev team or even Automattic that BP is being kept on course and not sidelined for the moment while Automattic allocate resources elsewhere?
And no this is not a rant either just a fair degree of concern

Surely this comes back to the fact that 1.2.4.1 is not really that stable paired with WP 3.0? I realise that it’s meant to run with WP 3.0 but there do appear to be issues, which would make me wary of running the combo on a production site.
You will be told that WP/BP requires inordinate amounts of script memory so it makes sense to eliminate that from the equation right off the bat, increase it to at least 64M more preferably.
Sadly I’m not expecting any notion of a smooth or comfortable progression to WP 3.0; I’m running a test install of WP 3.0 rc3 with 1.2.4.1, not put it through it’s paces but with activity stream failing if set as home page for starters I’m inclined to wait for BP 1.2.5 to start actually testing how many plugins will work without mods.
In reply to: Mass delete blogsNot sure this will be a huge help, but may ease the torture of removing so many blogs.
In /wp-admin/wpmu-blogs.php
~line 309:
$num = isset( $_GET ) ? intval( $_GET ) : 15;try changing that last value after the colon to a higher one i.e 100, this should control how many rows are displayed per page.
Sadly they haven’t thought to add a select all checkbox so there is the minor pain of having to check each in turn, silly oversight really given it’s such a common thing to code in lists such as this.
Please note this isn’t tested , it works to control the limited number of blogs on my local test installs WPMU 2.9.2 but I do not imply any warranty in following this , test only on local dev site first.
Other than that I would have thought you would need to work at the mysql script level to remove blogs in bulk, but you require someone with greater skills than I to advise on writing sql scripts.
Lastly; it’s odd you get quite so many splogs and makes me wonder if there are any fixes about that you haven’t added to your site.
In reply to: I cannot find .htaccess file to moderate itSounds as though there is an error in your rules within the .htaccess file, any small error in syntax can cause server error.
Notepad++ should be able to save files without a name, but as long as you have the file uploaded you should be able to download, modify in notepad++ and re-upload without issues.
In reply to: I cannot find .htaccess file to moderate ityou don’t want write on public for your root folder – the recommended permissions for htaccess file is 644 -rw-r–r– try just modyfying the permissions for the actual file .
this page of the WP codex is helpful if you haven’t already run across it.
https://codex.wordpress.org/Changing_File_PermissionsI would give it a read as it sounds as though you may well have set slightly dangerous file/folder permissions now.
Editing a file without filename on windows systems is possible you just need to use a decent code/text editor, but definitely not notepad or the like, failing that you should be able to upload say htaccess.htaccess and simply rename it once uploaded to the remote server removing the filename.
In reply to: is there a how to guide anywhere?6.5 hours !! that is not a long time at all, tech forums like this and others are not a service, rule of thumb for bumping posts is generally in the order of 24hrs more or less, added to which it’s the weekend, many of do this coding thing for a living, horrendous long hours, the sane ones try and take a break, most forums will tend to slow down over a weekend.
In reply to: When comparing two files in 2.9.2…Oh indeed!
