hey @prashantvatsh in your upcoming update of plugin functions for the “BP Custom Functionalities” plugin you developed, is there a chance you could do the following (the stuff i mentioned above)…?
a shorthand version of my request is this:
1.] eliminate the mouseover message “view ___’s profile” when someone mouses over a User Avatar
2.] make User Avatars not clickable at alland the current options in your plugin are great, but there is no current way to exclude all roles from the Members Directory….so a request from me is also this:
3.] disable the Members Directory or exclude all roles from the Members Directory
in the meantime, is there any way to do the things in requests 1 and 2 that i mentioned above…? not necessarily in an update, but with just raw code i can add to my site?
i like your plugin for what it can already do; thanks for that!!! i like knowing i can lock profiles. i just want the avatars to not give people the impression they can get to the profiles that are locked. because having the avatars clickable when the profiles are locked and not visible is a mean tease. 😀
thanks again for all you do!
In reply to: How can I disable all user profiles in BuddyPress?so @shanebp at this point i’m just hiding access to user profiles through a redirect…but really that is not what i need.
can you help me with this?
because what i really need is a way to prevent people from having clickable user avatars in the first place.
i don’t even want there to be a mouseover message like, ‘click to view ___’s profile’…because i don’t want these avatars to be clickable. i don’t want these avatars to lead to any profile.
i’ve tried jquery code and that didn’t work — it did not disable the message (‘click to view ___’s profile’) and it did not disable the clickability of the avatar.
i do not want the avatar to be clickable and i do not want a message to popup upon mouseover. not any message whatsoever. but jquery doesn’t seem to be the solution….
any ideas on how to do this?
as usual, @prashantvatsh you are the man — a true master of buddypress! <3
got it right! it IS apparently a ‘nouveau’ issue…..perhaps that should be addressed in a future update? i’m likely not the only one puzzled at this.
note: i realized at some point that the last 20 characters — no matter how long the description — would always be cut off. this of course causes great display problems with group descriptions that are short (as was the case in my initial screenshot within the introduction text of this post…).
so i created a new group (actually a few but this is the last one) to make sure i wasn’t imagining things. and yep — no matter how many times i changed the group description length, it would always cut off the last 20 characters. the group description could be 300 characters or 30. always just the last 20 characters were cut off.
this works though! perfectly, i might add.
thank you once again for this solid solution!!
screenshot of how this played out, before and after your solution:

@prashantvatsh thank you for the response <3
unfortunately i have since changed themes and deactivated plugins and…..still got the same result.
tbh it’s been a bothersome thing since i started using BP but i ignored it….when i make a shorter group description like i did above, it cuts off the majority of the description and adds the ellipsis in the group description when it’s seen in the groups directory.
is there any way to make an equivalent to the CSS ‘!important’ designation in PHP to override this bizarre, annoying ellipsis thing? whatever the source, there HAS to be a way to create a command that overrides the presence of the ellipsis in the site. i never will use it anywhere else….so if i could disable it site-wide i’d be fine with that.
thoughts?
oh and P.S.: the screenshot i pasted (above) is from the groups list that a member is part of on the site — this issue is not happening within group pages themselves….only in the directory/total listing of groups that a member is part of.
of course, if anyone else has any idea how to solve this, i’m open to that too!!
Forgive me for asking for your help on yet another issue, @prashantvatsh but you are truly my hero now, and seem to be the smartest person on this entire site. Any ideas on what I’m struggling with above?
Thanks in advance for any help!!! <3
@prashantvash THAT WORKED!!!!!
i’ve not seen any problems since i used it; it merely changes the slugs, so it ((THANKFULLY)) does not cause issues as feared. all group tabs still work, can still create new groups….all of that. i’ve tested out your solution for the past day or so, and nothing has gone wrong with my site since implementing it.
it is simple to achieve, and works so well!
as always, you are a genius and have provided the correct, most appropriate solution. you are positively wonderful. thank you. <3
P.S.: apparently this is NOT a bbpress issue; they said it is something that buddypress is responsible for, because these are forums that are associated with user groups in buddypress.
@timehubzone — don’t know how a username with a space in it would be relevant; this is not related to usernames or user profiles
‘change the permalink setting from the default that WP installs with’….in what menu? in the ‘forum’ settings…? did that
here’s what the ‘forum’ settings in WP looks like:

@shanebp what if i want to change the default “forum url” creation from something like this:
/groups/group-name/forum/….to something like:
/groups/group-name/chat/….?
i’ve gone into the ‘settings’ area and changed the root forum name to ‘chat’ and had ‘topics by freshness’ selected, had it unselected, have changed the default forum to not be the root, etc. etc…..no luck
i heard somewhere about a plugin that could change this default URL path creation to something else, but never heard which plugin it could be
i do NOT want to hack core files — any suggestions?
In reply to: Description Groups@ipokkel unfortunately lol upgrading to 3.2.0 didn’t help for my issue.
it’s definitely 3.2.0 that i have. it’s the strangest thing. the workaround worked perfectly before; i’m almost tempted to reinstall the previous version, just to get that fix back.
In reply to: Please help….please!@prashantvatsh you are very welcome! you always have the best advice.
so here’s a strange thing that is happening now since i added that code….
the groups list loads first, then the image loads after. so there is an ‘accordion’ look to how it loads….the groups list comes first, then the screen hops as it expands and inserts the image. is there any way to make the image load first, every time….before the group directory ‘groups list’ loads…?
it’s also loading slowly…not sure if that is my site/server or if it’s this page itself.
any advice?
thank you once again for all your help!! <3
In reply to: Please help….please!thank you SO much @prashantvatsh — that worked!! the only thing i had to do after was to hide the things that were appearing above the picture/groups list now since the workaround you posted above. so, to the ‘additional CSS’ section in the wordpress customizer, i added:
div#subnav-filters.subnav-filters.filters.no-ajax{ display:none !important; } div.pag-count.top{ display:none !important; }i realized that the image was not floating “above” the list of all groups….it was now part of the container (or whatever you call it) of the groups. and i wasn’t going to use those sections i just hid via CSS (above) anyway…thank goodness someone else had told me how to hide something else previously via CSS or i’d never have been able to hide that stuff i just hid, either! 😀
thanks again for all your help. this works good enough for me. <3 you’re fantastic!!
In reply to: Description Groups@ipokkel okay lol….i had to restore my site to an earlier time, so….this fix was lost. totally sucks.
and, i updated to the latest version. which apparently came out after your fix was posted.
so here’s what you recommended:
For a temporary workaround this worked for me:
buddypress\bp-templates\bp-nouveau\buddypress\groups\single\cover-image-header.php
line 62
<?php echo esc_html( bp_nouveau_group_meta()->description ); ?>replace with:
<?php echo bp_nouveau_group_meta()->description; ?>reference: https://codex.wordpress.org/Function_Reference/esc_html
so i interpreted that location as:
wp-content\plugins\buddypress\bp-templates\bp-nouveau\buddypress\groups\single\cover-image-header.phpbut when i got there, there was no line 62 as there had been before. even after the coffee this time… 🙂
here’s the contents of the cover-image-header PHP file that i see at that location now:
<?php /** * BuddyPress - Groups Cover Image Header. * * @since 3.0.0 * @version 3.2.0 */ ?> <div id="cover-image-container"> <div id="header-cover-image"></div> <div id="item-header-cover-image"> <?php if ( ! bp_disable_group_avatar_uploads() ) : ?> <div id="item-header-avatar"> <a href="<?php echo esc_url( bp_get_group_permalink() ); ?>" title="<?php echo esc_attr( bp_get_group_name() ); ?>"> <?php bp_group_avatar(); ?> </a> </div><!-- #item-header-avatar --> <?php endif; ?> <?php if ( ! bp_nouveau_groups_front_page_description() ) : ?> <div id="item-header-content"> <p class="highlight group-status"><strong><?php echo esc_html( bp_nouveau_group_meta()->status ); ?></strong></p> <p class="activity" data-livestamp="<?php bp_core_iso8601_date( bp_get_group_last_active( 0, array( 'relative' => false ) ) ); ?>"> <?php /* translators: %s = last activity timestamp (e.g. "active 1 hour ago") */ printf( __( 'active %s', 'buddypress' ), bp_get_group_last_active() ); ?> </p> <?php echo bp_nouveau_group_meta()->group_type_list; ?> <?php bp_nouveau_group_hook( 'before', 'header_meta' ); ?> <?php if ( bp_nouveau_group_has_meta_extra() ) : ?> <div class="item-meta"> <?php echo bp_nouveau_group_meta()->extra; ?> </div><!-- .item-meta --> <?php endif; ?> <?php bp_nouveau_group_header_buttons(); ?> </div><!-- #item-header-content --> <?php endif; ?> <?php bp_get_template_part( 'groups/single/parts/header-item-actions' ); ?> </div><!-- #item-header-cover-image --> </div><!-- #cover-image-container --> <?php if ( ! bp_nouveau_groups_front_page_description() && bp_nouveau_group_has_meta( 'description' ) ) : ?> <div class="desc-wrap"> <div class="group-description"> <?php bp_group_description(); ?> </div><!-- //.group_description --> </div> <?php endif; ?>where do i put that fix now?????
thanks in advance for any and all help.
In reply to: Please help….please!@prashantvatsh forgive me please for tagging you in this comment; you seem to have the best plugin suggestions on the site, though….so, if you would be so kind….do you happen to know of a plugin that I can use to achieve this…? Or would it be best done with code??
In reply to: Buddypress registration page password field@vapvarun is there a plugin you can recommend that will allow me to override the ‘group directory listing’ of all groups — that page?
i merely want to add a header image to display above the list of groups on the group directory page. that’s all.
i’ve tried (unsuccessfully) to get my site to use its layout options on the page that displays all groups…but no, the buddypress settings are overriding my wish to place an image above the listing of all groups on the group directory page.
i hate to ask you how to modify template files….but i think that may be what i have to do.
is there a way to accomplish this with CSS?
all i want is to have an image display above the list of all the groups on the ‘group directory page’….how to get that done? i do not care the method, i just want it to be there. of course the less code i can use to do this the better, and i do not want to use a plugin to achieve this, but at this point i am desperate!!
the buddypress template seems too strong to me, i can’t seem to find a way to get the page to do what i want for a layout.
is this better done with a plugin? it’s a buddypress template that seems unable to be altered. so i have no idea what to do next.
thank you in advance for any and all assistance! 🙂
@shanebp i hate to tag you in this, but this is my question too. i am attempting to modify the ‘group directory listing’ template……i just want to insert a header image above the ‘groups list’ in the ‘group directory listing’……
i think that means that i have to override the ‘group directory listing template’….right??
if not, can i add a header image via CSS to the group directory listing page?
thank you in advance for any and all help with this.
In reply to: How can I disable all user profiles in BuddyPress? Thanks, @shanebp — appreciated!
This is just a ‘redirect’ right….? So is this better/same/worse than a 301?
Is there any way to prevent User Profiles from loading in the first place?
In reply to: Hide membersso, @shanebp forgive me if resurrecting this thread is a bad idea, but it has the information in it that i have a question on, and i figured it’s easier to use this one to talk about my issue rather than create a new thread and link back here.
i looked at the bp-custom.php file you linked to for this issue and i’m unsure where i can find the correct code to use with it….because i am actually not trying to merely hide members from the directory, but am instead trying to hide them from the directory and ALL other users on the site. i want to make it so that the user profiles basically are unreachable…along with each user’s information.
so i believe (not sure, but i believe) that to achieve this is i would need to make sure the profiles are handled in one of the following ways:
– password protected from view, accessible only to admins/keymaster
– never loaded at all somehow, via bp-custom.php
– the template for user profiles is blanked out somehow, so information is never put in them
– get the buddypress profile for users — when clicking on an avatar — just redirect to the main site pageof course, i have no idea if these guesses are the way to achieve the goal i really want….which is to have only one profile used (i’m using woocommerce’s account screen for their profiles)……i have no need for a buddypress profile to be used in addition to the woocommerce account profile page that i have them already using.
i honestly just want each user’s personal profile page in buddypress to be disabled. so they can’t see their own profile or any profile of others.
whether that involves forwarding users to the site main page when they click on a user, or (ideally) not being clickable at all, or….oh, i don’t know. as long as no buddypress profile is viewable by any member in any way. not even by the buddypress user themselves.
and yes — this would also include hiding member names from search.
note: i don’t care if they can see the member list in the hidden group forums; that is the only place i care to see members listed. but i don’t want those member avatars to be clickable in a hidden group forum. not ever.
thoughts????
Okay, I spoke too soon, LOL…..apparently that only works for 5 minutes, then something goes “back” to what it was, and the forbidding of uploading Avatars is re-instated.
And if I disable the “Re-Order” plugin, then I can upload Avatars…..but when that happens, the entire backend of the Admin panel no longer works. Everything freezes. So Javascript is likely involved somehow….or….I dunno, PHP??? What did the Re-Order plugin do to make it “essential” to the backend being able to be used — what the hell…!? LOL…
So. I need to find a way to initialize javascript for the backend again, while leaving javascript disabled when it comes to avatars being changed. I think. Or……something to be initialized that manages the backend……whatever that is, when it’s off, the avatars can be changed — but the backend is “frozen” and no plugins (like the duplicator plugin) can be initialized/used if it requires the user to click anything. Because NO clicks make any difference.
OH WOW, I just thought of something….if it’s “loading order” and it’s in the head, if I moved it to the footer that might help….so that’s what I did. Used the “re-order” plugin that my site seems to not be able to live without (LOL)….and got it to move scripts to the footer.
NOW the avatar can be changed!!! THANK GOD.
FYI, for now….unless something else goes “boom” this is resolved.
The plugin I’m talking about says it’ll be possibly discontinued in late 2018 (eek!)….so I hope if anyone is reading this it’s still in the WordPress library at wordpress (dot org)…..if not, perhaps you can hail the creators to send you a copy.
Here it is as it exists at this moment on the WordPress dot org site: https://wordpress.org/plugins/re-order-css-and-js-loading-order/
The creators of it say, “Description
Notice: This Plugin is no longer being actively developed or maintained. At the moment, we believe it to be fairly stable but that might not continue with future WordPress versions. We recommend you looks for an alternative plugin. This plugin is likely to be deleted from the WordPress plugin directory late 2018 / early 2019.”
And their site is down. Looks like the company is dead. :/
Perhaps it’s gonna get forked on GitHub? No idea. The company name: HTML5andBeyond
If anyone else is having this issue, and can’t get that plugin, I suggest you find a way to get the scripts to go to the footer. That was what did the trick for me! 😀 Good luck…
@prashantvatsh I hate to be a bother….but there is no resolution to the avatar photo upload situation. Please forgive me for tagging you in this thread. If you would perhaps suggest a better plugin to reorder CSS and javascript, I would appreciate it. Or if there is a solution that I’m not thinking of here….please let me know. I would deeply appreciate it.
P.S.: I can now update cover photos; Autoptimize was preventing that from happening. Was also preventing using TinyMCE in forums to upload photos.
NOW BOTH those things work (THANK GOD)….but the Avatar is STILL not being allowed to upload.
Note: when I disable a “Reorder” plugin, which reorders javascript and style sheets, I can upload avatars, but the entire back end no longer functions well — it’s as if scripts are disabled. For example: if I’m in the Plugins screen and click the box where it selects all plugins, and that Reorder plugin is disabled….? Only the box I checked (the little one on top of the list for all plugins that SHOULD be activating all checkboxes to be checked when it’s checked)…..only that box gets checked. Nothing initializes. :/
I’ve since deleted Autoptimize but kept the Reorder plugin (because my site can’t function without it for now). I need a better solution. EITHER a way to make sure no “reordering” happens for BuddyPress (like a “do not reorder me” command or something similar)…..or a better “reordering plugin”….
Thoughts?
@johnmcole is this the same issue you had? this is what i am experiencing…..please help if you can! 🙂
