    @Edelwater nice heads up. I hated all chat options until you pointed out BoWob. Did you have to do anything special to pull in BP Display Names on your install? Or did you just add it as a typical plugin?

    Dude – You’ve been watching too many conspiracy theory movies lately. Let me try and put some of your questions to rest:

    1. There is no group of insiders. Just folks who have been around since Andy started putting code in the repository. There is no conspiracy for those “in the know” to get guys like you to pay for stuff. We’re all here on our own dime. Some make money in WP/BP related endeavors but they are still here on these forums because it validates their skill set and they’re also good people.

    2. You need to hang out at http://testbp.org for awhile. It is what you get “out of the box” in BP. I don’t want to be to snarky here, but that fact is written all over the place. Not sure how you don’t know that. The theme at buddypress.org is (aside from being pretty outdated as far as BP goes) Andy’s own creation. He has not once said it is what you get with BP nor has he intimated that it would be available. Way back when, we asked him to make it available with no luck. O well, no big deal. You seem to think it’s his fault for not giving it to you? FYI, buddypress.org is not a typical BP install. Groups are barely used. Why do you have it in your head that it is?

    3. No matter how much nice language you use, calling this community “two-faced” is not only a sure-fire way to make enemies but it’s a total falsehood. In fact, it’s an insult to all the volunteers who put in countless hours answering questions of people to lazy to read all the good info at their finger tips who’d rather just rehash the same basic stuff over and over. It’s a miracle we still get their awesome help.

    SO here’s a few suggestions: Quit masking your contempt for this community in polite prose. Fill out your profile with links and such so you are more than just a username throwing barbs. Read the codex and all the great documentation and to what DJPaul, jjj and all the other selfless BP-asisters tell you.. Perhaps a thread like “I’m trying to replicate the forum functionality the way Andy does it here on bp.org, does anyone know how that’s done” might be way to start.

    Good luck to you. We’re always here to help :-)

    interesting approach, Bowe. Thanks for the idea. Trying now.

    @idotter Did you really find it necessary to copy the same post as above into three separate threads?

    @Derek DJPaul is not being dismissive of the FB Connect feature. I would wager that he likes it as much as you. What he’s trying to do is get you to find support for it at the right place….the author. He certainly realizes that it is a poerful community growing tool and important to the BP community but, given the BP team didn’t write the plugin, how can they provide support for it? If Andy did the port, he did it as a side project as it is not part of BP core. He might be able to help with your problem.

    Was recently in the Pods IRC channel and was told by the devs that they don’t plan on addressing BP until WP 3.0 is out. I run Pods on my wife’s site and think you could force the issue but it might not be worth it

    Not sure what you’re talking about. In 1.2 the permalinks on the activity stream for forum posts take you right to the post, not the forum itself (“View” And you can alwys click on the topic title or the forum to go to those levels.

    @David I just created a page called ‘blog’ (which defaults to ‘blog’ for that page’s slug

    The following menu item in header.php:

    <li<?php if ( bp_is_page( BP_HOME_BLOG_SLUG ) || bp_is_blog_page() &&
    !is_front_page() && !is_page() )
    : ?> class="selected"<?php endif; ?>>
    <a>/<?php echo BP_HOME_BLOG_SLUG ?>/" title="<?php _e( 'Blog', 'buddypress' ) ?>">
    <?php _e( 'Blog', 'buddypress' ) ?></a>

    renders a menu item domain.com/blog, just like it used to.

    You need to make sure you choose that page in Settings>Reading ‘Posts page’

    On further reading of your post, maybe I don’t understand. I just know, what I described produces the exact same results as prior to the change (and removal of home.php)

    @David From my experience on my site, you don’t even need to define the blog slug, just set the posts page under Settings>Reading after you create the Blog Page.

    @Andy – Suggest a note to folks to take these steps as it won’t be apparent/intuitive to everyone

    why wait for the plugin when all you have to do is browse the buddypress template tag files in each folder for the functons you are looking for?

    I think the bP Geo plugin is a farce. I have tried multiple times to contact the dev team there to no avail. They even go so far as to claim to be sponsored by Automattic. Seems doubtful. They are nowhere on this forum and no one has been able to get their plugin to work.Call me suspicious. You are better off trying @jjj’s plugin https://wordpress.org/extend/plugins/bp-member-map/ He is a living, breathing person as opposed to the aforementioned dev team

    I have been running BP in Production since well before the 1st alpha release on the same url with the exact same registration slug AND requirements. Nothing is protecting on my site any more than a standard install – no captcha, etc. I can count on my hand the number of spam attempts to register. They are so few, I just delete them and use BanHammer once they try.

    How? We have a specific (albeit small) set of required registration fields to fillout. That’s all. I love siple and fast registration as much as the next guy but, unless you want to enforce email address verification and a bunch more, those are your real options.

    Changing the slug will work until it doesn’t …which won’t be very long. Consider how that spammer found you in the first place…with a bot – not by randomly coming across your site.. and just like in the matrix, the bots will find you again. :-)

    1.0 was “Whitbread”

    1.1 was “Newcastle”

    1.2 s/b “Smithwicks”

    This should fit nicely into postings on WPTavern.com

    Ok. I just made this up but Andy and MrMaz will know what I am talking about.

    @mikepratt

    Thanks to @MrMaz, this will be a huge hit on my site, I think

    keep in mind, it’s not “broken”. We are debating the merits of one way versus the other. There is not an email as you suggest in BP/WPMU just Activation. most sites that I join these days do not send their passowrds on signup, usually activation emails. You could always write a plugin that sends the password.

    @mikepratt

    Participant

    @snark didn’t realize you are single user WP so no activation email

    so here’s a tweaked version and the latest in my custom tab efforts, fyi:

    // passes MyClass scope into ajax query for custom Class Year activity filter
    function bn_ajax_querystring_activity_filter( $query_string, $object, $filter, $scope, $page, $search_terms, $extras ) {

    global $bp;

    if ( !is_user_logged_in() || $object != 'activity' )
    return $query_string;

    $args = array();
    parse_str( $query_string, $args );
    $args['object'] = $bp->groups->id;

    switch ($scope){

    case 'myclass':

    $slug = "usma-". bp_get_profile_field_data( array('field'=> 'Class Year', 'user_id' => $bp->loggedin_user->id));
    $groupid = BP_Groups_Group::get_id_from_slug($slug);
    $args['primary_id'] = $groupid;
    break;

    case 'mycadetco':

    $slug = bp_get_profile_field_data( array('field'=> 'Cadet Company', 'user_id' => $bp->loggedin_user->id));
    $groupid = BP_Groups_Group::get_id_from_slug($slug);
    $args['primary_id'] = $groupid;
    break;

    case 'mybranch':

    $slug = sanitize_title(bp_get_profile_field_data( array('field'=> 'Branch', 'user_id' => $bp->loggedin_user->id)));
    $groupid = BP_Groups_Group::get_id_from_slug($slug);
    $args['primary_id'] = $groupid;
    break;

    default:

    return $query_string;
    }

    return http_build_query( $args );
    }
    add_filter( 'bp_dtheme_ajax_querystring', 'bn_ajax_querystring_activity_filter', 1, 7 );

    and the action:

    function bn_add_activity_tab() {

    if ( !is_user_logged_in() )
    return false;
    ?>
    <!-- default item-list-tabs activity-type-tabs

    <ul> -->

    </div><!-- default item-list-tabs activity-type-tabs -->

    <div class="item-list-tabs activity-type-tabs" id="bn-tabs">

    </ul>
    <ul>
    <li id="activity-myclass">
    <a>" title="<?php _e( 'Activity for my Class Year', 'buddypress' ) ?>">
    <?php printf( __( 'My Class', 'buddypress' ) ) ?>
    </a>

    <li id="activity-mycadetco">
    <a>" title="<?php _e( 'Activity for my Cadet Company', 'buddypress' ) ?>">
    <?php printf( __( 'My Cadet Company', 'buddypress' ) ) ?>
    </a>

    <li id="activity-mybranch">
    <a>" title="<?php _e( 'Activity for my Army Branch', 'buddypress' ) ?>">
    <?php printf( __( 'My Branch', 'buddypress' ) ) ?>
    </a>

    <?php
    }
    add_action( 'bp_activity_type_tabs', 'bn_add_activity_tab', 1, 2 );

    A few things to note:

    1. use the WP function sanitize_title() if you have a field that might return more than one word e.g. the group ‘Military Police’ returns ‘military police’ but transforms into ‘military-police’ (a pretty slug0 which gives you a correct slug now.

    2. I added addl markup to force my new tabs into their own element.

    3. Don’t be shy to make suggestions and keep improving this technique. I think many will use it to customize their installs.

    There is not going to be an email sent with username and password (not really necessary given they just chose one) There is, in fact, an Activation email. Did you not receive that?

    (Recall the annoyed furor over site devs complaining that their users had to wait for an email with their password. Consider that addressed!)

    @mikepratt

    Participant

    @nickbwatson Duh. You’re right. I head my head somewhere else. What I meant to say was it screws up the new Mention feature which makes use of the @username model.

    @mikepratt

    Participant

    @snark You forgot to mention the Activation email. Is your new user not receiving one? I just did a test registration and immediately received an email. While I agree with @Peter that plain text isn’t so bad but I also think it’s not so necessary to send the password the person literally just chose. The always have the Forgot Password link if they forgo it seconds after the fact. No real need as I see it to add a filter.

    It’s a great idea but just remember that the member directory, as it works now, alphabetizes by username so you will render that useless…for now

    It’s a concept I am considering but one question: What becomes of the existing users who already have reg usernames and reg urls for their profiles? Does their account email become their login?

    @mikepratt

    Grossbuff. Could be interesting. fyi, the plugin link on the Wp plugin directory is a 404. Do you have a demo or a few screenshots?

    Update: Here is how we use a custom field to look up a group and return it’s ID to create a custom query stream:

    // passes MyClass scope into ajax query for custom Class Year activity filter
    function bp_my_ajax_querystring_activity_filter( $query_string, $scope ) {
    global $bp, $wpdb;

    if ( $scope != 'myclass' || !is_user_logged_in() )
    return $query_string;

    $args = array();
    parse_str( $query_string, $args );
    $args['object'] = $bp->groups->id;

    // get user's class year and generate slug (BN naming
    convention is usma-yyyy for class groups)
    $slug = "usma-". bp_get_profile_field_data( array('field'=>
    'Class Year', 'user_id' => $bp->loggedin_user->id));;
    $groupid = BP_Groups_Group::get_id_from_slug($slug);
    $args['primary_id'] = $groupid;

    return http_build_query( $args );
    }
    add_filter( 'bp_dtheme_ajax_querystring_activity_filter',
    'bp_my_ajax_querystring_activity_filter', 1, 2 );

    Every new user selects a graduating Class Year e.g. 1987 upon registration. They are auto-joined to a Class group with the naming convention ‘USMA YYYY’ (the slug is then ‘usma-yyyy’

    So the $slug var is generated off a lookup of the logged in user’s Class year field and then the slug permits lookup of the Group ID. Of course, sticking to a naming convention is how this works but the concept is pretty simple.

    You could easily have a custom field (required or voluntary) that provides a starting point via it’s values for custom Activity filtering. TIP: Stick to drop-downs and check boxes in order to control the values fed to the $slug function.

    The WPMUDEV folks purport to be big players on the bP community but they have zero presence on these boards helping people out and they have plugins designed to suck you into their overpriced premium model. I treat everything on that site with a cautious eye. But that’s just me
