Xampp is far from intimidating, it’s simplicity itself really and a very well put together package, perfect for running a local dev install of WP/WPMU/BP.

Set up a simple vhost container for the local site and edit your local hosts file to include mylocalsite.com.dev and mysubdomain.mylocalsite.com.dev or something similar.
