Here are some functions that will override the display name to username: http://pastebin.com/kZQnQaJA (updated with forum display name overrides)
Paste it in your theme’s functions.php file.
There might be a better way to override the display name for the parent activity update, but this was a quick hack. If anyone’s up for a better fix, please post it!
