I read that back in March there had been some talk of BuddyPress for standard WP. But, I guess that didn't pan out. Otherwise, I suppose that may have been a better choice.

It hasn’t happened yet. Once WordPress and WordPress MU merge, then BuddyPress won’t be far behind.
