You should be fine checking svn out or even using the zipped file of whatever trunk version you want. I’ve recently tried both just to make sure that there was not some strange issue.
Are you creating a brand new database with each install attempt? In other words, is it a totally clean install? if not, I would suggest installing with a new DB and see if this behavior goes away.
