@DJPaul – Yup, it has been known for about 3 months: https://trac.buddypress.org/ticket/1356

I found a solution here: http://danpolant.com/how-to-use-email-addresses-as-usernames-in-buddypress/

You have to edit wp-includes/pluggable.php
