    @johnjamesjacoby ok I checkedout trunk which on reflection was not what I intended as that is bleeding edge soon to be tagged 1.3 isn’t it? On a side note there installed that for fun and it breaks straightaway with an undeclared function bp_page_title() which isn’t a new function!

    It’s been a while since I used Subversion – mainly due to disliking it :) using the repo browser I am downloading:

    https://svn.buddypress.org/branches/1.2

    That is I presume is the current state of play for the 1.2 branch to be tagged as 1.2.5

    No you’re not the only one I raised a ticket on the matter.

    Problem is that for the moment you shouldn’t use that hide adminbar unless you make some changes. The issue is that there is a function that checks to see if disable adminbar is true and if so it generates a style tag with a ruleset to hide the adminbar with display:none, this function then adds an action with places this style tag erroneously in the wp_footer hook resulting in a style tag sitting in the document body, a major validation issue as it’s obviously illegal to place this tag at this point in a document.

    As in reality this style tag is not actually required due to the adminbar being removed anyway the function ought to have been removed, but for some unknown reason it was deemed to be ok to leave until bp 1.3 branch is released.

    To fix in the meanwhile as there may be a wait for 1.3 you will have to add a remove_action or edit the core file holding the function (not first choice)

    In a child functions.php file you can try adding this line:

    remove_action(‘wp_footer’, ‘bp_core_override_adminbar_css’);

    That should prevent the action from running, tested and works for me on WP 3.0 BP 1.2..4.1, but there may possibly be better approaches?

    but you are only ever displayed as ‘Admin’, you don’t show as ‘Super Admin’ that is just a menu item or category that all admins should see, or so I thought? have you actually lost the dashboard menu headed ‘Super Admin’?

    Ought to also point out that this forum is really for BuddyPress specific issues, you might be better asking this at the WP forums or sticking with the thread in that post.

    @foxly would love to test the nightly, could you fix the link to the build? or is it me?

    😆 it is stickied it just doesn’t actually stay at the top of the lists. it’s going to get very boring bumping it every five minutes Paul.

    I will attempt to get an outline topic posted to the bpdevel post, hope others will too!.

    <quote JJJ>because no one is testing the branch and no one is reporting back how various fixes have affected them.</quote>

    If that is the case how have any branches arrived at RC/stable stage. Is this one of the fundamental issues with the project development as I’ve wondered how it is that releases seem to have as many issues as they seem to. Is there insufficient feedback on bleeding edge, if there were more testing prior to release would there be fewer bugs/issues passed on to the next milestone or point release. I’ll admit I haven’t run any bleeding edge installs, I have various versions hanging around but all running stable releases of one version or another, so perhaps really I ought to have a version always running current dev branch.

    @mrmazz I’m glad you drew attention to that metaphor as it worried me somewhat and simply asking that everyone and their dog pitch in and submit patches can well be a recipe for disaster.

    Back to my comment to Andy to give those guys that know their way around BP commit access it will lighten the load on Andy & John James.

    There is a interim fix for the activity stream on front page issue and if I could find the link I’d post it 😉

    Not really, it’s more complicated than it need be for a simple property adjustment but thats the way of things, creating a child theme is a good idea even though fairly involved – once done you’ll realise it’s not really – it will allow freedom to adjust/overwrite further styles set in the default theme without fear of your changes being overwritten, also if things go wrong simply re-select the BP-default theme in the dashboard.

    As for the width issues and IE I’m not really sure why max-width was used, as David says default theme is not IE <8 friendly but it ought to be and could be quite easily, state width as 'max-width' & 'width' to keep IE happy.

    Haven’t got a huge amount of time of time to look in detail, as trying to get through stuff at the moment which ‘m not really feeling the love for.

    I would have thought that it’s simply requiring the DB field creation stages? Had a quick look through the group-tag plugin but either missing it’s point or it’s not working on my install.

    What perhaps may help is to keep a copy of the Skeleton component handy as that might help with DB input stuff? in the file bp-example-classes.php is a constructor that contains an example ‘save’ to DB function which you may be able to utilise in a simpler form.

    I actually think this idea has legs; the ability to create extra fields for the group description? wouldn’t be a bad idea and could be used in a variety of ways. If you can get that data saved to DB I’ll try testing things and see if I can help out in some small way although the watchful eye on one of the others might be more help but best to get as much working first as possible.

    A decent code editor ought to be able to do searches across multiple files open or closed.

    I ran into the member screen template issue myself couldn’t figure out where settings screen was being rendered from, plugins.php living above the other folders with screen layouts/loops just doesn’t really make sense especially not as somewhere to look for a page/component layout, I would think that there is somewhere a better more logical approach to this screen. Little things like this make Theming a chore!

    Willing to help with what? have you actually stopped and looked carefully at the options in the dashboard under the BuddyPress section? Is this what you are talking about? If not then you MUST be far clearer on what it is that you are trying to achieve.

    Couple of points of order for future reference: telling a developer how long something will take when one can’t do it ones self is logically flawed and rude, please avoid doing so :)

    Calling on those people directly to rush to sort out your issue is also most wrong, do not attempt to grab the attention of specific people on a tech forum unless there is a particular reason that only they can deal with, those five guys you @mention are all far busier than you can imagine and should not be badgered unless really necessary, simply state your question there are plenty of people on the forum that can help just be slightly patient and prepared to expand on your requirements.

    This has been an issue for a while. Time stamps have been, for whatever reasons, rather problematical for BP, one instance occurring in the activity stream was corrected, yet later I too noticed the issue re-surface in sent messages, I did establish all relevant timezones were correct when the issue first manifested so it’s unlikely to be the server timezone at fault but it does need to be ruled out. I thought that there was a ticket on this? But might be imagining it.

    Paul, I don’t think it’s ever been in question how much is owed by so many to so few (that’s a hacked famous quote :wink:) and I think we’ve all expressed thanks and acknowledgement to that small band of brothers at one time or another; as for the thread turning into a ” Roast or disagreement session” why would it, I don’t think it’s showed signs of that thus far? has it? Threads such as this are extremely important to the health of projects/forums/communities – As long as they do not simply devolve into meaningless off topic rants.

    Are you actually invoking the “Nazis” or “Hitler” rule on this thread? :) (Godwins Law if one were wondering)

    @apeatling Andy regards commit access I would have thought that you already have at least four guys here that seem to have a pretty deep understanding of the code base involved would it not be a start and indeed lighten the burden on yourself and JJJ if they were to have commit access right away?

    <quote Andy >ask your questions at the BuddyPress meetings bi-weekly (there has been a serious lack of questions lately, why?)<quote>

    That might be due to the holding of these meetings not being that clearly mentioned? Might just be me being dense but where I was aware of them I wasn’t sure really where to go to participate (yes course I could have asked :) )

    So part of the site should perhaps be used to announce these and perhaps provide a brief transcript or bullet points of the talks – recently came across Paul Gibbs’s blog where he did provide a transcript of one.

    I don’t think any of us hate this site it just needs finishing and I’m sure you’ll agree it was upgraded, some work appeared to go on while the site was live then it was left in a half finished state? The site is vital to the project it’s it’s home and central focus but I doubt anyone would argue against that.

    @jjj it’s not simply about fixing bugs though.

    Commitment is also a difficult subject and I’m in total sympathy with your plight vis a vis work commitments, I would love nothing more than to be able to devote 100% of my time to really getting to grips with BP but it aint going to happen, I have a tonne of commitments and have to try and maintain a business and earn a living at coding, BP is not something that I do as a service it does not earn me money, thus sadly cannot command a disproportionate amount of my working time, thus my personal route to BP zen mastery will be, by necessity, a slow one :(

    Regardless of commitment ability there are still many of us that can return good advice and feedback based on prior experience and general knowledge and it’s there that we need to see the community firm up and genuine dialogue start to happen (Yes I note your point about Trac as a focal point for a lot of that)

    As for comments such as “other neat things”, and “WordCamp.org redesign.” not sure how to respond to that other than – not really interested, likely will never get to one and am more concerned with BP right at this moment :) but as I said in an earlier comment I get the fact that Andy doesn’t have the luxury of total devotion to BP and I level no criticism for the fact that he has to deal with other Automattic projects as well.

    I’ve wondered this as well. I mark as spammer, and I guess really one ought to leave them marked as, however I don’t particularly want an ever increasing list of spammers in the DB when I do backups so will go through the list and delete them. Certain persistent spammers are blocked though if you leave them marked, delete them and they are able to register once more.

    Ditto what Paul said, the meat and bones of this thread is not really centered around how to elect leaders, Matt part of the issue is to do with your statement “If you want to get involved, get involved” TBH that is possibly a rather trite statement, many of us here are trying to be ‘Involved’ and finding it hard? there is much feedback of genuine worth from community members that ‘have been around the block a few times’ I myself have been around the block many many times and have much experience of projects and how they can flounder so certain things ring alarm bells with me, and I voice concerns along the way in the hope of drawing attention to and possibly correcting issues, too often though posts simply go unanswered or we go round in circles talking endlessly.

    I think that the fact that many of are wiling to persevere with the project and with discussions like this point to the fact that we do consider BP a viable project and one worth sticking with (the thread title is a little on the extreme side and could do with being changed :) ) If I thought BP was a lost cause I would have simply moved on and not be expending time and energy on threads such as this.

    That’s what I mentioned in my first response, but seemed to cause confusion. Ning and BP have a slightly different approach, Ning blogs are not – in some senses – real blogs whereas what WP 3.0 MS offers are actual WP blogs for your registered users.

    @hnla

    oops :) @andy could you please forward all recent @mentions to @apeatling
    @mikepratt It is surprising the amount of talent available , and that all appear to have been around the block a few times :) on a sidenote and to add a little levity to the thread Jeff Sayre wrote a interesting little post on his blog on ageism and a project he was recruiting for.

    Are you being asked to grant ftp access for the download?

    @hnla

    Participant

    Yeah wouldn’t hope to replicate all Nings features on BudyyPress. Default core BP doesn’t have blogs in the Ning sense, but iirc there is a plugin that creates a group blog, have a hunt through the plugins listings.

    @hnla

    You have to go to Super Admin > themes and enable your required themes for the network before individual blogs can see and activate a theme in their dashboard

    @hnla

    At risk of confusing matters there is also this possible approach:

    on the group directory page change the avatar and group name permalinks to point not to the /group-name/ i.e ‘Home’ screen but to the /group-name/forum/

    <div class=”item-title”><a href=”<?php (!bp_group_is_forum_enabled() )? bp_group_permalink(): bp_group_forum_permalink() ?>”><?php bp_group_name() ?></a></div>

    That does mean though that links to the group that might appear around the site i.e in the activity stream will not be affected and continue to point to the ‘home’ tab/screen, a good or bad thing depending on ones viewpoint?

    @hnla

    I’d echo those comments Mike, but it’s also slightly imposing to ask or even expect DJPaul/Jeff/r-a-y/ to take on board the leadership of things – as much as I would love them to, and would hope they would (I have expressed surprise that as Mods the team appear to have very little useful power and need more @andy take these guys on board to help run the site please, grant them as much access as is possible). What is undeniable though is something needs to be done, agreeing on the detail therein open to minor debate, but much has been expressed. First order of the day ought to be to finish this site of properly, it simply can’t stay like this and remain a credible example of a BP powered site it also needs to function in a manner that we developers need from a community dev forum.
