Well, let’s face it …

a) it is an UI that is inconsistent at present and needs fixed, and

b) the automatic gravatars are awful (ain’t seen no one defend them nor customise a theme to suit them!) and they could at least be replaced with a blank.

And both have been recognised as such.

I tried dropping a simple <img> tag into to place and with a little css, I suspect that would work just as a spaceholder/blank to keep consistency.
