I’m also on BlueHost and installing manually is as easy as installing with simplescripts. That said, I needed to install and reinstall fifty-million (ok, maybe eight) times to get things working right with forum integration, etc. What worked was breaking it down slowly slowly slowly. First WPMU, then buddypress and finally using these instructions for integrating bbpress:

    http://theeasybutton.com/blog/2009/04/30/integrating-buddypress-10-wpmu-and-bbpress/

The reason I had to reinstall so many times is I had trouble with the domains/subdirectories and finally had to change it out manually:

    http://welcome.totheinter.net/2009/05/06/changing-wordpress-mu-from-subdomains-to-subdirectories/

It’s still buggy — I had some problems when I had to change out domains to get my site showing up in the right place — but I have hope it’s at least mostly working.

Jeff, i’m the keymaster rights, and if i delete the require_once( ‘/path/to/wp-blog-header.php’ ); i can access to bb-admin but if i’ve it no…

i’ve called the buddybar and search/login bar in bbpress theme and i login in login bar because i’ve the integration with WP and i’m sure i’ve the keymaster rights and in theory if i go to site.com/forums/bb-admin i can see the administration backend

    any idea? thanks!

Arturo, we aim to please and sometimes we actually succeed!

when i try to access bb-admin i’m redirected to forum home and not in admin panel

I’m not the best bbPress guy to help you here, but here’s my first thought: you did not log in as keymaster. When you log in on the front page as keymaster, you should see an admin link next to your name. If you don’t have that after you’re logged in, you might not be set as keymaster.

    I have one question

Here are the three answers to your one question!

Is it the case that anyone can register on the community and create a blog

You can control blog registration in WPMU’s backend. Log into the admin panel as site administrator and visit “Site Admin > Options > Allow new registrations”. There are a few settings which give you some basic control.

Can the community admin restrict who has the privilege to do that

If the community admin is the overall site admin, then see the first answer.

is it possible to make membership by invitation only?

Thank you so much Jeff you rock!

but now i’m another problem if in bb-config i’ve the code to call the wp-blog-header.php when i try to access bb-admin i’m redirected to forum home and not in admin panel… any idea about this?

    thanks for your help.

Unless a member has direct experience with a one-button installer, you will most likely not get much help here on how to use SimpleScripts on BlueHost.

But, you really should not be installing complex software platforms like WPMU by using third-party installers. You should manually install WPMU paying careful, close attention to the readme.txt file that comes with it.

You need to make sure that WPMU is working perfectly before you install any plugins. This includes BuddyPress. If you continue to have issues, you should visit the WPMU forums and see how others have solved their problems installing Mu on BlueHost. Once WPMU is working perfectly, install BuddyPress. If you then have issues, come back here and we’ll see what we can do.

To help us better help you, if you do come back with a BuddyPress-specific issue, please follow these instructions.

Good question; I don’t know, I did it manually. Using Bluehost, I ran into a snag or two but the solutions are well documented within these forums.

This issue is not resolved imho.

Your issue is not what this thread is about. The issue of the OP was resolved and so he marked it as such.

Posting a new request in a one-month old thread marked resolved will not get much attention. See here for more details: https://buddypress.org/forums/topic.php?id=2543

But, to provide some insight into your question, a couple of us are currently working on a full-featured privacy (authorization) component for BuddyPress. It is a ways off from being made available.

Hi. Basics: What version of WPMU and BuddyPress are you using?

Also: What version of MySQL is your server running please? Also, I have heard BlueHost supports only subdirectory installs as it doesn’t support wildcard subdomains, so can you confirm you’re trying the subdirectory install?

If that last question makes no sense, try removing your WPMU / BP install and databases and try reuploading/reinstalling manually, not using SimpleScripts. A search on this forum has revelead at least one person saying that their problems on BlueHost went away after they did a manual install.

I’m using that plugin as well and I’ve asked that same question here on the forum with no success. However, whether you’re using that sidebar plugin or not, I’m still having trouble getting a clear answer on how to replace WP code linking to the author in your custom theme to the profile page in Buddypress.

In other words, how do I change <?php the_author_posts_link(); ?> from my custom home theme to <‘author’s buddypress profile link’> in order to reach that author’s profile page?

    Thx

Questions without all the needed information such as bp, wpmu version numbers, a link to your site, get ignored.

My car won’t start. Why won’t my car start? Lack of information leads people, who are willing to help, to move on to somebody who is providing enough information to actually help them.

These are some pointers to help get you started.

    Hey Erich,

i know a developer who is able to achieve this. They wrote me a private message on the german buddypress forum as a reply to my post:

    http://forum.wordpress-deutschland.org/buddypress/48801-buddypress-international-benutzerdatenbank-teilen.html

Maybe we could work somehow together to get something suitable for both of us. If you are interested in the developer write me a PM and i sent you the details (you can write in german if you want).

It is of course easy to do this in a forum!

But, I do not know of any non-forum plugin that is specifically designed to facilitate question answering. I suppose you could use the P2 theme and create a special post category just for this purpose.

a freakin’ sidebar with it’s own loop inside of the two others. I’m most likely outside of the loop as always, but I don’t want to specify a forum Id :(, I want all of the forums with the – bp_get_forum_permalink().. same as the ole.. bbpress_live_get_forums() and bbpress_live_get_topics().. I probably sound like a skipping record to you…thks.

    Burt Adsit

Where are you putting this loop code? You either have to specify a forum_id or be inside group forums for bp_has_topics() to return anything.

bp_has_topics(‘forum_id=xx’); Look at the code for bp_has_topics()..

the latest version of bbPress is required so (RC-1).

if you have MU+BP up and running see this doc https://trac.buddypress.org/browser/trunk/bp-forums/installation-readme.txt is the instruction to install and integrate bbPress in MU and BP.

1.. make sure the template file for your member theme contains /friends/index.php and everything is kosher there.. and then make sure that you don’t have another page/post named friends, and you don’t have a url rewrite rule for friends in your. htaccess file.

    2. the avatar upload is most likely due to misconfig of the GD Library.

    try here – https://buddypress.org/forums/topic.php?id=2454

    3. default for the home page? did you change the theme? can you put up a link?

if you’re only getting a 404 on subdomains.. your issue is with the WPMU install… most likely having your DNS settings to allow a wildcard subdomain.. try here.

no.. you don’t want to paste it into a text widget..

You would use it as a custom loop in your theme.

But, that code does Not work (for me right now)

    <?php if ( bp_has_topics() ) : ?> is always giving null…

and I’ve tried three or four incarnations of a custom loop based on the buddypress/forums/bp-forums-templatetags.php I had previously used sam’s bbpress live plugin successfully (same code)? I will return to this issue on monday unless some brilliant mind steps up to the plate over the weekend. :)
