ParticipantI don’t really believe Buddypress will support this (at least not untill Buddypress 1.4, and even then only if lots of users demand it), their might be a plugin of some sort that allows it though. Shouldn’t be that hard to copy the data to the buddypress version if that happens.

ParticipantMy point was what if BuddyPress supports this at a later date which in my opinion it will. He should have scope for importing that in the BuddyPress then. no?

ParticipantJust install buddypress with group forums and install bbpress seperate, with intergration offcourse.
There’s nothing wrong with that.

ParticipantYou can certainly have a standalone install of bbPress along with BuddyPress and then integrate it with the site to give user table sharing and login sync.
But I would suggest to check how BuddyPress is going to handle this issue at a later date so that if you want to import it back to single system then you can because BuddyPress might support it then.

ParticipantHi
I was wondering if anyone of you tried to install bbpress the “old way” and STILL have groups, in order to have a plain old bbpress forum (not attached to any group) AND groups.
I just installed the brand new BP 1.2 (which is really a great job) and installed bbpress automatically, but, as a couple of you said, it’s confusing to me, and it will be to the users too.
Thx.

Participantdefinitely great idea to enhance usability !
Timewise, I am in favor of implementing proper Privacy-Features for BP at first.

KeymasterI’m in favour of it. Makes sense from an usability perspective and it doesn’t alienate the forums as you mentioned.

Participantas for the bbpress stuff – some last_poster names are also stored in the topic/posts tables – double check that.
I’m not sure what you mean by this. I accessed the mySQL database via phpMyAdmin and am looking at the topic tables. What should I change to solve the problem?
Thanks

Participantsome of the references in the activity are hardcoded in the content column – so you may have to edit it manually to reference the updated member links.
as for the bbpress stuff – some last_poster names are also stored in the topic/posts tables – double check that.

KeymasterCreate a group, then create a forum for that group.
The forums directory should be available at example.com/forums.

ParticipantOk, obviously there are the possibilitiy of information overflow, but that does not mean you shouldn´t have the option of turning notifications on. In Cartwrights plugin you can choose what you want the users to be notified of. For some bbpress installations, being notified of e.g. forum replies to a topic you started, is feasible – for larger ones they may not be.
Let´s take facebook as an example:
You don´t get notified of every wallpost in a group. Why not? Because you would have 200 new notifications every day if you are a member of a popular group.
But you do get notified if a friends comments on your wall, or if someone comments on a post that you also commented on. This keeps the conversation going and is a good way of keeping up with things you find interesting etc.
Apparantly, notifcations in the buddybar can be done with a plugin, since Andy has made it possible for plugins to plug in to the notifications area. In light of this information I am not advocating this having to be in core. If it where to be in core, I can understand only wanting the notifications to be “citical only”. But as a plugin I don´t see a problem with having the option to allow notifications of comment replies, forum replies etc. An option regarding forum replies could be to have a “do not notify me of furter updates” link if you are not interested in the forumpost anymore.
There is always a fine line with giving people enough info and too much info, but I suggest that it should be up to each admin to decide what works best for his community.
Any more thoughts?

Participantthanks Ray the pathing solved the integration (?) problem but I have to admit this is now getting confusing:)
What I was *expecting* was that the data from my current bbPress would basically be repurposed into BP style/version of bbPress forums.
What I am hearing though is that instead of being a wrapper like BP is around WP I am going to have to maintain two sets of forums?
February 24, 2010 at 4:54 am #65242still giving
ParticipantExcuse my ignorance and ability to voice it but …
Where is there more detailed discussion of the philosophy and direction behind the new integrated forum design than, here, say, https://codex.buddypress.org/developer-discussions/buddypress-forum/
Will an admin dashboard, plugin-ability re-appear or be integrated with WPMU/BP in the future?
(I must test markup code …)
Is it meant to be so basic, or is it a “proof of concept” kept a simple as possible to avoid as many screw ups as possible?
I am very keen to be ‘loyal to the platform’ and am encouraged to see BBpress embedded so simply and well but, at the same time, some basic functionality would be good.
Thanks.

KeymasterI have tried both http://www.winextra.com/forums/ and http://www.winextra.com/forums/bb-config.php with the same result – can’t find the file.
If I’m not mistaken, I think you have to put in the absolute file path to bb-config.php (eg. /var/www/forums/bb-config.php).

1) bbPress plugins in BuddyPress will require porting to a WP plugin so BuddyPress can detect it. Depending on the complexity of your bbPress plugins, this might be complicated.
2) You’ll basically have two sets of forums – BP group forums and your external install of bbPress. Your external install of bbPress will need to be themed if you want it to match your WP/BP site.
3) BP forums are powered by groups. You need to create a “group” in order to create a forum in BuddyPress. If you choose to integrate an external install of bbPress with BP, your BuddyPress forums will show up in your external install by default as well. To avoid duplication in your external bbPress install, read this thread.

KeymasterI think Detective or socialpreneur was working on a port of AJAX Quote from bbPress to the BP forums.
If nothing gets released within the next week or two, I might take a crack at it.

ParticipantHey r-a-y, than you for your reply

I have some little questions, after i’ve read all topics around here (i guess) about bbpress and buddypress combined:
– To have a forum as it is on buddypress.org/forums, you need to install bbpress seperatly and integrate it with wordpress. Does this way allow the Group Forums, as if you install bbpress within buddypress (not seperaly) ? (maybe there is a plugin for that as far as i know, but know nothing about its stability with the new buddypress);
– I’ve installed bbpress within buddypress, (not a seperate bbpress install). I made a group called Forums to check if forum will be enabled in it…and yes it is as you can see here. http://myislamicblog.com/groups/forums/forum/
But the problem is if you noticed, the Forums Link on the right menu doesnt appear next to blogs and groups.
Any ideas?
Thank you in advance!

MemberHi, I just installed buddypress on my wordpress blog that is currently running bbpress. I guess I am missing something. I thought buddy press could run along side my blog and not take it over. I was hoping to create a community with buddypress and keep the template and look of my current blog. Is that possible? I installed it as a plugin through wp.

ParticipantRay,
Thanks for the reply. I was afraid that a standalone bbpress is the only option, but was hoping for an easier way to avoid the complexity. All the talks about bbpress eventually evolving into a plugin anyway makes me hesitant too. I might end up keeping the /blog/forum/ setup.
February 20, 2010 at 7:15 pm #64426In reply to: Any way to change forum base URL?
r-a-y
KeymasterBecause you have WP setup in site.com/blog/, this isn’t really possible.
It may be possible to use some rewrite rules in .htaccess, but I’m not sure.
Keep in mind that if you install a standalone version of bbPress, you’ll essentially have two forums unless you:
A) Disable the forum component in BP, or
hide the references to the site.com/blog/forum link.

Kevin Ryman
Participantsusomoy sinha,
The only way you can create Admin, Moderators, Forums, Categories, etc. on bbPress is if you the stand-alone version and not the one that comes bundled with BuddyPress.
As geoffm33 said, an admin can delete forum posts directly from the topic on the included BP bbPress.

geoffm33
ParticipantAre you using BP 1.2 with the integrated BBPress? Or a standalone BBPress?
If you are using the integrated method, then you add moderators from the Group > Admin > Manage Members
And as an admin/moderator you can delete forum posts directly from the topic.

ParticipantI have to agree with nexia. the best approach for simplicity would be to take the good core of bbpress, fork it, and integrate it into buddypress completely. From there it will be easier to integrate new features as group forums grow. as of now, it is a good technological feat, but maybe not the right direction.
The fact is, the majority of what you see in the group forums is buddypress, but bbpress. bbpress is just running the backend engine, which is not that much code. There is probably an equal amount of code written to connect them.
