ParticipantAre you using BP 1.2 with the integrated BBPress? Or a standalone BBPress?
If you are using the integrated method, then you add moderators from the Group > Admin > Manage Members
And as an admin/moderator you can delete forum posts directly from the topic.

ParticipantI have to agree with nexia. the best approach for simplicity would be to take the good core of bbpress, fork it, and integrate it into buddypress completely. From there it will be easier to integrate new features as group forums grow. as of now, it is a good technological feat, but maybe not the right direction.
The fact is, the majority of what you see in the group forums is buddypress, but bbpress. bbpress is just running the backend engine, which is not that much code. There is probably an equal amount of code written to connect them.

KeymasterbbPress is turning into a WP plugin sometime in the future, probably using the custom post types feature in WP 3.0.
There is some merit in bbPress within BP. It just needs a little love.
[EDIT]
Didn’t know this was an idea thread. I don’t think this is going to change any time soon.
You could try Simple:Press or one of the other WP forum plugins out there.
Scott Kingsley Clark has a port of bbPress working on his WP Pods CMS framework, which could be a good future alternative:

Keymastervtblogmu: No question is dumb. Go into a group, then go to that group’s forum page and you will be able to post.
ebellempire: Please create a new thread if you haven’t already, that issue isn’t to do with the original poster’s problem.

ParticipantI’m also having issues with the bbPress forum installation. Upon installation, the Forums navigation tab appears, but when clicked leads to a blank page. I have tried reinstalling several times. This is a brand spanking new installation of WPMU and BP.

ParticipantIf there’s a programmer out there willing to share the code and procedure for getting this done, without plaguing the forums here, please get in touch. I work well with programmers and would like some time on Skype to find out what code needs to go where. Please PM me a price and the approximate time you think we would need.

Tobias Bäthge
ParticipantHi,
thanks for the answers so far!
Setting up a separate bbBress is not really what I want, because it somehow would be overhead and a lot of additional for maintaining and everything.
Restricting Group creation sounds good. However this would require that all users are automatically created as members for the default group which will be used for getting the Forums. Additionally that would require some work on the theme, so that the users don’t get to see any Group related stuff.
I guess all this would be possible and I’ll look into it, but it’s not really what I had hoped…
Just because I don’t want to use Groups, BuddyPress is still well suited for my project. I currently have most of the other components disabled as well (like Blogs, Friends, Activity Stream), but nevertheless there are enough features that I can use for a private community. I especially like the easy administration (from within the WordPress Frontend basically), because I don’t want the users to be in the WordPress admin area.
All of this is superior to a plain bbPress installation, because I get all the WordPress features with it “for free”. So basically this enables me to keep the current website for the project but add some community features to it.
Regards,
Tobias

ParticipantHow about making a single group and then keep everything here. Silly workaround, i know.
There must be some way of using it without the group.
BTW why do you wanna use BuddyPress if you don’t want to use any of its feature. bbPress might be a better choice. Would like to hear from your side.

4) Re: modifying menu bar – you don’t need to hack the core file.
Read this:
https://codex.buddypress.org/how-to-guides/modifying-the-buddypress-admin-bar/
You can put custom code in /wp-content/plugins/bp-custom.php to override settings and variables.
7) Blacklisting usernames in WPMU – login to the WPMU backend, navigate to “Site Admin > Options”, look for the “Banned Names” field.

There are also some good how-to guides as well:
https://codex.buddypress.org/how-to-guides/
Also read up on the global $bp variable:
https://codex.buddypress.org/developer-docs/the-bp-global/
Hope that brings you up to speed!

ParticipantShit I wrote a long reply and lost it because I copied something over it in the clipboardAnyways I will get my hands in BuddyPress soon. I do have the knowledge of the basics of the WordPress APIs (bbPress too) but this is my first day with BuddyPress.
1) I will keep the Moderation suite to the last position in job queue.
4) For main menu, I will have to edit the core file. Right?
5) Didn’t realize. Silly me
6) Just wanted to reserve multiple for myself like “Ashfame” other than the default “admin”
7) I am on WPMU. How can I blacklist certain usernames?
Thanks for the help so far!

ParticipantI am sorry.
I am running WP MU 2.9.1 with BuddyPress 1.2
I have installed it as sub-folder on a sub-domain.
I installed the 1.2rc3 and then upgraded when 1.2 was out.
my bbPress was installed as fresh copy from within BuddyPress.
Didn’t notice the issue earlier so can’t say much.
I tried overwriting the file once again but didn’t work. How come deleting the whole folder and then uploading it again will do the job instead of overwriting everything?

KeymasterBP isn’t remotely accessible – you need to load the PHP files. I do not have a working knowledge of Flex but I suggest you look into WordPress/bbPress “deep integration” and find out which files in the bbPress theme header are included to bring in WordPress.
February 16, 2010 at 2:28 pm #63513Andy Peatling
KeymasterBuddyPress.org runs an old version of BuddyPress and bbPress because it hasn’t been upgraded. It will be upgraded to 1.2 very soon. The theme wasn’t released because you’d get copycat sites trying to confuse end users. It is also broken for new versions of BuddyPress.
I’m closing this because it’s not constructive.

Moderatoryup, if you use the 1.2 version it works with single WP and its just as easy as installing a plug in. If you want to use a forum you will have to download bbpress and upload it to the bp-forum folder inside the buddypress folder

KeymasterBuddyPress.org is the insider community. If you’re registered and paying attention, then you’re one of the cool kids.
There’s a few reasons why BuddyPress.org works and looks different than a usual BuddyPress installation does out of the box. I’ll do my best to explain them for you (and everyone else) but I can assure you, there’s nothing stopping anyone from mimicking this or infinite other kinds of hybrid installations.
1. This site uses the old and very yucky deep integration method with bbPress. Before BuddyPress 1.1 that was the only way to do it. With 1.1 Andy wrote an abstraction layer for bbPress to seamlessly bring its functionality into a WordPress installation.
2. The decision was made that forums made the most sense when linked directly to a group of users. Rogue forum categories without a group of users to attach them to, have taken a back seat for the time being. This has been the topic of debate for a while, but it won’t change for 1.2 and probably won’t change until bbPress as a whole gets a little more attention.
2. Because BuddyPress.org links directly with WordPress user and usermeta tables (which is why your 1 login works at all WP related sites), upgrading and shifting around over a million registered users isn’t a task to be taken lightly.
3. Since Buddypress 1.1 was released, BuddyPress.org hasn’t changed a single bit. Little to no attention has been paid to the inner workings of this site, and all efforts have been poured into the project itself in a very successful attempt to deliver a much more stable and solid project. Even group avatars on this site are still broken from the conversion.
4. The purpose of the support forums is to have a central community devoted to the questions and answers that a wide array of users have while installing, theme-ing, and in general just using BuddyPress. If you have needs that don’t fall within the core code then you’re stepping outside of core support and looking for custom development.
5. Many people on the forums (including myself) have stepped up and taken on side projects (pro bono or as paid clients.) A slew of plugins are available specifically to enhance parts of BuddyPress, but just like with WordPress if nothing currently exists that does what you need, you either need do it yourself or find someone to do it for you in a way that fits your budget.
6. BuddyPress 1.0 launched in April of 2009. It’s less than a year old and 2 major updates have already come through with even more to come in 2010. It’s still a baby compared to WordPress and bbPress, and I think Andy and myself will be the first people to say that it’s still capable of a lot more. Patches are always welcome, and in the past year the number of code committers has doubled (from 1 to 2
) and the number of significantly contributing code patchers, bug reports, and trac tickets has just about doubled also. So, if you’re unhappy, I can understand why. In a way BuddyPress.org sets an unrealistic expectation of a turn-key installation. If you feel you’ve been mislead in one way or another, that makes sense to me. Your opinion is valid, and when the site is updated to 1.2, I think you’ll be pleased.
In the meantime, if you choose not to use it that’s okay. If you choose to study the code and start submitting ideas and patches, that’s cool too. Whatever anyone decides to do, I don’t think anyone will be mad. We’re all buddies here, remember?

ParticipantI am having the same problem. I’ve traced it down to the fact that when the Buddypress plugin is activated the tables are not created. I started putting die() statements in bp-core.php and found that the install and check install functions were not running.
I went back to bp 1.0.3 and did the install and it worked. The tables were created. Here is my info:
1. Which version of WP/MU are you running?
2.8.6
2. Did you install WP/MU as a directory or subdomain install?
directory
3. If a directory install, is it in root or in a subdirectory?
subdirectory
4. Did you upgraded from a previous version of WP/MU? If so, from which version?
no clean install
5. Was WP/MU functioning properly before installing/upgrading BuddyPress (BP)? e.g. permalinks, creating a new post, commenting.
yes
6. Which version of BP are you running?
tried to install 1.1.3
7. Did you upgraded from a previous version of BP? If so, from which version?
no
8. Do you have any plugins other than BuddyPress installed and activated?
no
9. Are you using the standard BuddyPress themes or customized themes?
standard
10. Have you modified the core files in any way?
no
11. Do you have any custom functions in bp-custom.php?
no
12. If running bbPress, which version? Or did your BuddyPress install come with a copy of bbPress built-in?
