this thread may help – if you’re posting to bb_topics outside of bp via this custom component, then you may need to make some other adjustments.

Also, as per Windhamdavid’s post, continue discussion in https://buddypress.org/forums/topic/how-to-access-to-bbpress-admin-from-buddypress

I’m closing this as we seem to have many threads concerning this exact subject in the last few days.

Thanks, I’m still not seeing a bbpress admin panel, and actually there are bb-config.php files in

The bb-config.php that lurks in /bp-forums/ is intentionally NOT the regular bbPress config file. Open it in a text editor and have a look.

    Hi,

I have installed the latest version of buddypress version 1.2 beta and im using this on wordpress 2.9.1. I would like to know how i integrate bbpress v3.1 with wordpress/buddypress. I’ve read many articles on this but all see to take about WordPress MU which i’m not using.

    Any help would be appreciated.

    Thankyou.

    Murphy

bbPress is only up to 1.0.2 so I have no idea what you’re talking about. It’s probably best to make a new thread.

This issue was resolved by ensuring that my WPMU wp-config and bbPress bb-config settings matched those described here:

Like David said, the beta includes the files needed to run the bbPress forums. The error logs make it look like they’re not there.

You will need to look and see if there are files in your buddypress/bp-forums/bbpress directory; if not, you’ll want to download bbPress and put it there.

I was using the forums that needed to be set up using the groups. I don’t recall a forum directory but there may had been one. I think I used the built in bbPress version that came with 1.1

Once I overwrote the files I noticed the page was not found.

Good call on the error logs :)

Until bbPress is a core WordPress plugin, BuddyPress hijacks your forums and takes over the controls.

    #61750

What you’re doing is basically a reverse external install. You will be able to add plugins and access the admin panel, but you won’t be able to do anything with it unless you continue to build on that same idea further, and start loading and connecting bbPress plugin code and functions into a custom theme.

There is a “forums” folder in the BuddyPress plugin. Within that folder should be a bbpress folder. The trunk version does not include the bbpress folder. So if you overwrote your entire BuddyPress folder (or forums folder)… you would no longer have bbpress installed. If that’s the case, just download it and dump the folder in /plugins/buddypress/forums/

    #61742

    Need more info.

Do you have an old bbPress external installation from 1.0, or do you use the built in bbPress version that came with 1.1?

Do you have any entries in your error logs?

Checking your referral logs is one way you can see how they’re getting in. Tip: login to the bbpress admin area and CLOSE SIGNUPS.

Obviously this only applies if you are running a seperate bbPress install.

Check if your bbpress folder is still in place. With that I mean, are all bbpress files there? Probably you need to grab them again and put them in place.

One thing to remember, the spammers can see the signup code. That’s what they build their scripts for.

The better you can customize your site, the better you can stop them.

What I wrote about here was mainly for people working with BP 1.2. But in either case (1.2 or 1.1x) if you want what you see at bp.org/forums then you will need template files to display your forums within your site’s BP theme.

With a std install of BP 1.2 you don’t have the ability to activate bbPress plugins, create forums independent of groups, etc. As of this date BP 1.2 only offers limited bbPress functionality from within BP. If you want more functionality you have to copy bb-config.php per the post at the URL below and then access the bbpress at http[yoursite]/wp-content/plugins/buddypress/bp-forums/bbpress

    https://buddypress.org/forums/topic/bp-12-and-bbpress-adminplugins#post-34150

If you want to separate non-group forums from group forums so that people don’t see group forums when viewing a list of forums (as seen in a typical standalone install of bbPress) then one way to do that is to do a second install of bbpress. Easiest way is to install BP 1.2, activate the forums in the admin panel, then go copy the /wp-content/plugins/buddypress/bp-forums/bbpress directory to a new location within your site – and be sure to also copy bb-config.php from the bp-forums directory and then edit the file so that it has the correct settings. That’s a simplified explanation, meaning there’s a bit more to it and you need to at least be semi-familiar with installing and administering bbpress software. For example, you probably should have the second copy of bbPress use its own db tables, etc.

I’m in the same boat. Have used a bunch of different captchas including the recaptcha that has been reworked for BuddyPress to no avail. Even took down our registration page for a day to make sure spammers weren’t bypassing via bbpress or somewhere else…. it was nice not having to delete spam accounts for a day. :) We may end up taking buddypress out at some point here until there are better spam tools in place.

How is it supposed to work out the box? I mean, it looks like the only thing that works is to create a group, which thereby creates a forum discussion. There doesn’t seem to be any way at all to administer the forums.

The site or group administrators go into a group and they will have extra controls to moderate threads. I believe all the bbPress functionality is included, but perhaps not the ability to move a thread to another forum (group).

What I’m looking to do is create forum categories or “boards” the way buddypress did here:

    https://buddypress.org/forums/

Then you need a seperate, external install of bbPress and then you need to integrate that into BuddyPress.

It looks like buddypress calls this a “Main Theme,” so my question could likely be better phrased: How do I create a “Main Theme” in Forums?

With the external bbPress install method, you need to create a bbPress theme to your requirements. With the BuddyPress two-click install, look at these files:

/themes/bp-default/groups/single/forum.php and the /forum directory in that path, too.

OK, tried both methods M suggested, and they get me this far:

    1) I can create posts and forums in the bbPress admin panel

    2) They don’t show up in BuddyPress/forums

Using M’s dual bbPress install procedure, there was one open question which is

    — edit the bb-config.php file so that the $bb->uri variable points to the right location for your hidden bbPress installation.

(which bb-config.php file, the one in WPMU root, or the one in the hidden bbPress directory?)

I tried just the one in WPMU root and I got the error above.

Now I have the location of the hidden bbPress install in both bb-config-php files, and while the error is either gone or not appearing, the Main Themes I created in the bbPress admin panel do not appear in BuddyPress (though the Group I created in BuddyPress does appear in bbPress).

    How should I proceed?

Followed the dual install method and I get this:

Warning: Division by zero in /home/dainis/community.urine-therapy.org/wp-content/plugins/buddypress/bp-forums/bbpress/bb-includes/functions.bb-statistics.php on line 214

…still gonna see if it works…

Which route should I take if I’m just wanting to add some “forums” “forum categories,” or “Main themes” as buddypress did here: https://buddypress.org/forums

    Asked that question specifically here:

    https://buddypress.org/forums/topic/how-to-create-a-main-theme-in-buddypressbbpress-forums#post-34773

PS: M, this solution (https://buddypress.org/forums/topic/bp-12-and-bbpress-adminplugins#post-34148 ) sounds pretty spiffy, but does this mean that everything will “disappear” in the next upgrade? Is your solution “safe?” Is there a way to know if it will work over the long haul? Also, it does not look like your solution includes installing bbPress, is that right?
