Participantjivany is right — unless someone has a modicum of experience with HTML and stylesheets, a smattering of PHP, and some knowledge of how WP works in terms of theme structure and templating, it’s going to be quite difficult for them to do much but use Buddypress out of the box or with child themes that are designed to work with the current version.
It’s not impossible, but some above-novice level of knowledge and comfort with coding and website architecture has to be pretty much assumed. Take it as a challenge!

ParticipantI wanna know why BP fails to work properly when I don’t follow the detailed instructions laid out on this site and thoroughly discussed in the forums? I mean, the hallmark of good software development is the creation of code that works when you don’t follow the instructions. Duh.

ParticipantIs there a list of shortcode that I could call a specific category links to display in a template? For example, if I want to display the last 3 links in category “x” in the sidebar of the member’s home page, is this possible?

ParticipantThe plugin wordpress Hashcash (updated today to 4.5.1) should now work for BuddyPress registration but it stops EVERYBODY from registering.
This is not true for me. I just registered a test user with Hashcash 4.5.1 installed. Though still waiting to see if it stops BP splog spammers.

ParticipantHah! I started reading, then looked to see it was Boone that posted it, then kept reading and wondering what the heck was going on, then remembered it was April 1st.
Well played.

ParticipantOh, and with respect to your error, make sure you are running the latest WP (2.9.2) and BP(1.2.3) versions.

ParticipantIf you are starting fresh with a BP child theme, all you need to do is look at the files in bp-default to decide if you need to customize them or not. I know that sounds sort of open ended but with the way child themes work, some time you might need to copy and edit every file but other times you may need to only touch one or two.
My approach has been to create the initial child theme style.css file and then start with the “regular” files – home.php, sidebar.php, index.php, archive.php, etc. just like a normal WP theme. I only copy a file from bp-default into the child theme if I really really need to modify it. Most of the time you can easily add stuff via actions and filters in your functions.php file. The advantage is this can be much more portable if you redesign your site in the future – just copy functions.php into a new child theme and go from there.
Really it’s best to just systematically go through bp-default and decide if you need to tweak each .php file or not. In most cases, you probably don’t have to.

ParticipantI have completed BuddyPress Multi-User. This will allow you to install BuddyPress only once and allow numerous and distinct BP communities within one WPMU installation. Only $500 per installation of BPMU with six months support for a limited time. I reserve the right to refuse to sell BPMU plugin at my discretion.

ParticipantIf you just want users to be able to submit blog posts, why not use regular WP instead of WPMU? In the WP settings, set the user’s default role to be contributor or something higher than subscriber. Then they can access the backend and write blog posts on the blog.
Note that this functionality doesn’t really have anything to do with BuddyPress.
The only reason to run WPMU is if you want your users to each have their own blog. If you don’t want to offer that, don’t run WPMU.
BuddyPress just provides the social networking functionality (activity streams/updates, forums, groups, etc.).
As for Burt’s plugin, I think it might not longer be necessary in most cases now that BP runs on WP Single and not only on WPMU. I’m probably mistaken though.

ParticipantThis is going to come across wrong but…
Buddypress functionality works out of the box. You install the plugin and everything works. What doesn’t work out of the box is all of the styling required to fit Buddypress into your current site design (assuming you don’t want to use the default theme).
If you currently use a stock downloaded theme for your WordPress site and have never made any changes to it, or mucked around with CSS and HTML then hiring someone to do this stuff for you might be the best approach.
Now, that said, once someone spends some time learning about CSS, HTML and how WordPress themes and plugins work, it’s really not that difficult to make changes.
There are very helpful people here but they can’t do everything for you. We can point you in the right direction but much like any education, you need to do some homework on your own.

ParticipantM,
if using the code above to default to hidden, is there any way to hide from the MEMBER list? I have around 1000 members from our old site so don’t really want to start fresh but we do want to have them “opt-in” to be listed. I heard that you could “trick” it by using user status of 99 In the db. I was going to set all users to 99 and then set them back manually but if your plugin could do that, that would be perfect. This would allow me to keep all users hidden until they “reactivated” their accounts or created a new one. I think this would be good for the teachers situation as well.
Thanks for the plugin regardless. This will work ok but if I can handle setting the status or hiding them, it would be perfect.

InactiveOver on the IRC BP Developers Channel it has just been announced that development for BuddyPress has ceased and that Automattic has put the code up for sale to the lowest bidder. This is due to the recent dissillusionment of all core developers and bp plugin authors by pushy and obnoxious users. RIP BP!

ParticipantI have been using BuddyPress for some time now and wondering why there are still no plugin-developers who are capable of writing a proper plugin that will make me generate money. Well you guys are talking about rich media features, but I did not recognize any of this in my income stream yet, far from talking about becoming rich !???
I am spending many hours each day looking into the TRAC-system to see if there is anything coming up like this in the Core-Code for the next release. If you did not consider the “becoming rich feature” yet, please make sure you include it in your next feature-poll ! I am sure it will be the most asked for feature on your list.
Well, there should be at least a hook to plug into my users bank-accounts (make sure Privacy works for that as my bank is located in Switzerland, thinking about moving towards Cayman though).
Could you please provide at least a code-snippet (I have seen this before on those forums) which will make BP also hook into the bank-accounts for not-logged-in users ?
Well, there are many internet-companies out there making billions of $$$ and their CEOs becoming famous. Please code something like this as this should be really Core.
If you are a freelancer plugin developer, I will donate $18 (a one-time fee only, I do not like subscription-fees as those are a ripp-off) if you are able to make me $ 1 billion.
I am sure there are talented people out there who would like to show their skills. Hey there are 17-year old kids who became billionairs by writing a few lines of code, you guys are for sure older and still did not manage to write a properly working “becoming-rich-plugin” ???

ParticipantRegarding point “A”, I’ve decided that privacy is overrated, that only those who are losers and morons would dare ask for such an anti-establishment type of tool. If Mark Zuckerberg doesn’t think privacy matters anymore, then who am I to disagree with a social-network god that controls the lives of–ah, I mean graciously provides a gathering place to–a third of a billion people.
Therefore, this morning I deleted all of my source files for the BuddyPress Privacy Component on my private repository and then put on my best suit of magnets and rolled around in my server room. And, just to make sure all that nasty privacy code was expunged from my network, I set my computers on fire while simultaneously striking them with a 20-lb sledgehammer.
If you want privacy, don’t sign up for a social network. If you believe in freely-sharing all the intimate details of your life–which of course you should because this is the way the world is heading–then accept the Facebook neural implant and merrily post away.

ParticipantThis a subject that I have searched a lot. Seems like we can only learn to write our own themes.
I bet there is someone that know how to add another sidebar.
I am using buddypress 1.2 and a Cosmic Buddy theme. I would really like it if I could just get a sidebar on the right like the one on the left.

ParticipantWell, first of all you should get things working, without getting any errors. And about that I don’t have any clue on how to fix it. And once everything works properly, then you can think about the pages to style.
The list I provided is the list of files that need to be changed to match your WP layout structure, with the header, content, sidebar, footer.

ParticipantI hope I’m right in saying the last issue I face, aside the css, is the upload permissions. Apache doesn’t seem to be able to create folders so if I want to upload an avatar or document I get:
Upload Failed! Error was: Unable to create directory wp-content/uploads/avatars/6. Is its parent directory writable by the server?
I’ve checked all my folders; buddypress theme pack, uploads etc and all is set to 755. If I set wp content to 777 everything works as it should. I know this should work with 755 though. Any ideas please?
