ParticipantI stumbled upon something today that may be what are you looking to achieve here..
Introducing Conditional Profile Fields for BuddyPress plugin
I know nothing about how it works, but when I saw it, I thought about you post here and think that is kind of what you were asking to do…

Participant@ronia – I am having some luck with most of the issues you describe using the “gridilicous” pro theme – and rtmedia plugin… am eager to test out the beta mediapress plugin ( http://buddydev.com/buddypress/presenting-mediapress-media-plugin-will-ever-need-buddypress/ )to see if it works with this theme and others to have better enhancements compared to the standard rtmedia thing.
A few thoughts to add to your discoveries perhaps.
(Still have not found anything perfect myself, just piecing together the least bad things at the moment – lol )
I found that most buddypress responsive themes are based on bootstrap – and since rtmedia loads a lot of bootstrap, and font awesome stuff, things would break when I put them together.. so I have to sift through the few that were not bootstrap based in order to use rtmedia.. bp-social is okay – but not totally (only percentage) responsive… I’ve been kicking around some BP + Tempura Theme and Firmasite as well – but have not done enough testing and modding to say whether they are ready for live sites..
I got a book on making responsive themes, maybe I will finish it before end of summer and make one. Hopefully the media plugins will mature a bit by then as well.

ParticipantThanks Henry! I had found a couple of plugins last week and one that does everything that I want (HTML, batch, etc.) but, the problem you have to import the contacts into the plugin. How do I export my contacts out of buddypress and then back in to the plug in. Is there a way to do this? I posted on buddypress because no one had responded in the last 5 days to the question I posted on the plugin’s forum. Thanks for your help!

ModeratorYou can’t do this through BuddyPress itself, but there may be a plugin that does it for you. Take a look on the WordPress Plugin Directory to see if anything is available.

ModeratorHi @disha76
I have installed Jetpack Like. But when a blog post is Liked / favorited it does not show in my BP Favorit list.
As far as I know, Jetpack Likes apply to blog posts only and are completely unrelated to BuddyPress favorites. If you ‘like’ something via Jetpack, then that’s separate to any ‘favoriting’ that you do via BuddyPress.
Another problem with Jetpack Like is it asks my blog visitors or members to register at wordpress.com compulsarily. Am I missing something?
I’m not aware of the specifics of Jetpack Likes, but you could try taking a look on their support page. I do believe they have an option to contact someone in their support team:

Participantjetpack likes are totally separate from buddypress more like a Facebook like. in regards to the buddypress favoriting you would need to code that in your page template i believe or use a theme which does that already.

ParticipantBuddypress-Like does not put any “Like” button below (or anywhere) a blog post in a blog post page. So how do my users like a blog post from the blog post page? When there are lots of Activity its impossible to come to the Activity page and search out where that entry for the blog post is. Am I missing something here ? How does other BP users handle this?
Buddypress-Like also does not put any “Like” tab in the Profile Tabs like the core BP favorits – so how do I find my own collection of Likes afterwards ??? How do I let other users know what I have liked? Thanks for your reply @djsteveb

ParticipantLooks like someone has forked or remade / resurrected this. From the support threads for the activity stream types block thing on wp repo; lenasterg.wordpress dot com/2014/11/14/bp_block_activity_types/
Says code is posted on github instead of wp repo – can anyone confirm this code is good / safe to use?
Why does buddypress dot org forums throttle and block me from posting half the time? meh. I have to cut up links, remove words. Another why we can’t have nice things, thing, I guess.

ParticipantA different method to get similar results:
I use BuddyPress Block Activity Stream Types ( https://wordpress.org/plugins/buddypress-block-activity-stream-types/ )and I have these set to be axed from activity stream:
deleted_group_document, new_blog, new_member, joined_group, friendship_created, activity_likedalthough it is in desperate need of an update / fork to make it work smoother with bp 1.9 plus I think. I just looked into plugin settings to get info for you, and I see a weird message on the settings page:
Warning: Missing argument 2 for wpdb::prepare(), called in /wp-content/plugins/buddypress-block-activity-stream-types/admin/bp-activity-block-admin.php on line 6 and defined in /wp-includes/wp-db.php on line 1154Hmmm.. it still works to block the annoying stuff my users have no interest in. Wonder what it will take to get this plugin forked and updated.

I would not use jetpack and try https://wordpress.org/plugins/buddypress-like/ instead. That may do what you are looking for, and it may not.. just a thought.

ModeratorUse a template overload.
And this is the file to use:

ParticipantI have changed the /wp-content/plugins/buddypress/bp-themes/bp-default/activity/activity-loop.php file to reflect changes mention here: http://wpmu.org/how-to-customize-the-buddypress-activity-loop/ but it does not change my site.
There is mention of altering the child theme, however, I have no other files anywhere named activity-loop.php.
I am using the Hueman theme with my site. Is this considered a child theme? This is incredibly frustrating.

ModeratorDid you mean BuddyPress as opposed to bbPress?
Wouldn’t it be faster to just check for BuddyPress in your plugin and if found remove their filter and then replace it?
You can always create a ticket in trac. If you do, please reference this thread.

Participant@ch1n3s3b0y – there are options to create your own profile fields, so you could add a new profile field with a radio button eg – choose customer or expert.
There are also different membership plugins and stuff that might enhance that a bit more – plugins like s2member.. maybe even something like press permit…
as far as having a different profile page for each – I think that is going to take some fancy custom coding.. some if then statements and such.. you will likely have to post on a job board to get someone with some skills on that.. it may be tempting to custom code a theme like this – but ultimately I think it would be better to custom code a couple of plugins and drop those into a sidebar or something – eg – “if bp_profile-field-2=customer” then display these fields / this code…
IF you custom mod up a theme and things change in the future where you theme has issues with new buddypress, or you want something different for another reason – then it will be more custom coding to bring over your custom profiles stuff..
just some random thoughts from a BP user – I am not an expert on any of this.

ModeratorTo get the info separately (first name and then last name) you’d have to a) query the database using MySQL or b) see if BuddyPress has functions to do this for you.
Regarding b, I’m not sure if there is anything like that available. Perhaps someone else here will know?

Participanti’ll need to pull it from the database like bp_core_get_user_displayname(), but the first and last name are custom fields i created in the buddypress registration form (http://www.cbtnest.com/img/regfields.jpg), how/where can i find out what those variables are named?

ParticipantHi @henrywright
I opened a Trac ticket to suggest Live Notifications some time ago:
https://buddypress.trac.wordpress.org/ticket/5976The theme I’m beta testing has these included.
This other ticket covers what I believe needs fixing with how notifications are generated:

January 4, 2015 at 2:38 pm #231454In reply to: WHERE DO I EDIT IT TO ALLOW PROFILE IMAGES?
Henry Wright
ModeratorThat’s odd. You should be given the option to upload so there’s certainly a problem that needs looking at. Usually you can just go to http://example.com/members/username/profile/change-avatar/ and upload your avatar. Your theme should provide a link to this page.
1. If that link is not accessible then there could be a problem with BuddyPress (likely caused by a theme or plugin conflict).
2. If your theme isn’t providing the link to the page (usually found via Profile > Change Profile Photo, then perhaps file a report on your theme’s support site so that the theme developers can make it compatible with BuddyPress.
Hope this info helps. Let me know if there’s anything else we can help with here.
