KeymasterDisable BuddyPress. Do you get any emails from WordPress on itself? e.g. user registration, comment notification, etc.

ParticipantHahaha, sorry to ask so many questions, I’m getting in a muddle but after playing with @mentions I think I get it now.
I get an email if someone mentions me in their update, I also get an email if someone replies to one of my updates.
I DON”T get an email though if someone simply @mentions me in a forum post. I can view that in my @mentions but there is no notification.
Is that right and if so can we have a way of receiving a notification if someone mentions us in a forum post. Also I only get emails, it doesn’t appear in the notifications in the toolbar. Is that how it should work also.
Thanks so much
Ross

Participant@rossagrant i don’t get any email notifications (even though enabled) on bp.org either – but on my normal installs, it works

ParticipantI can see the @ mentions when i click on the @mentions section in my profile but I don’t get a message in the notifications bar.
Could you @mention me on this site and I’ll see if it pops up on this site. On mine I don’t get one.
Cheers
Ross

ParticipantAre you supposed to get a notification when someone uses an @mention at you in a forum? I don’t get any notifications. Is this normal? I think you should know when someone mentions you in a forum post.

Participantpossible – you’ll need to code it in though as it is only setup to sift over activity content. Have a look at the bp_activity_at_message_notification functions on the basics.
*edit – though main blog comments hit the activity stream filter – thus triggering @me mentions.

ParticipantHello, I am having the same problem – WP 2.9.2, BP 1.2.3, BP Default Theme, BP Widget Theme, BP Columns Theme. I discovered the issue, completely uninstalled everything, fresh install of just BP and the themes, and none of the links in My Account or Notifications drop-down work.

2. Did you install WP/MU as a directory or subdomain install? directory
3. If a directory install, is it in root or in a subdirectory? root
4. Did you upgraded from a previous version of WP/MU? If so, from which version? No. Fresh, clean install
5. Was WP/MU functioning properly before installing/upgrading BuddyPress (BP)? e.g. permalinks, creating a new post, commenting. Yes.
6. Which version of BP are you running? 1.2.3
7. Did you upgrade from a previous version of BP? If so, from which version? No. Fresh, clean install
8. Do you have any plugins other than BuddyPress installed and activated? No.
9. Are you using the standard BuddyPress themes or customized themes? Standard BP
10. Have you modified the core files in any way? No
11. Do you have any custom functions in bp-custom.php? No
12. If running bbPress, which version? Or did your BuddyPress install come with a copy of bbPress built-in? Installed bbPress from within BP UI
13. Please provide a list of any errors in your server’s log files. Didn’t check.
14. Which company provides your hosting? HostmonsterMay 7, 2010 at 2:30 am #77023In reply to: @mention in wordpress post comment

ParticipantAH! Got it http://buddypress.pastebin.com/LrQuRa9T
This will show you the number of pending (NOT SPAM) comments next to the menu for ‘Manage Comments (#)’. Whew. I’m going to fiddle and see if I can make something like the notifications alert show up. But this is mostly what I wanted

ParticipantNo problem. Apologies for any misunderstanding

ParticipantI never implied U had a problem with that. If my previous post sounded like that, I apologize, as that was not my intention at all.

KeymasterMarked as resolved.
If there are any other issues, @hotforwords, change the topic back to “not resolved”.

ParticipantI have no problem with it at all. I was just in work at the time and hence didn’t want to browse the site on my work PC/work internet. That’s all.

ParticipantMe ? I was not surprised, I was GLAD the site had a woman in underwear…
Offtopics aside, I would love to see that bbP customization Marina !

ParticipantIt was just a tongue-in-cheek comment – I was just a bit surprised when the site had a woman in her underwear on the front page

ParticipantThanks everyone for the responses! Now I have a better understanding of how the different components work together!
In order to keep the stickiness of people coming back to my website when someone replies to a comment of theirs on the WordPress Post side.. I reactivated my Comment Reply Notification plugin for WordPress so now people get notified by the BuddyPress stuff as well as the WordPress Stuff!!
Just as a side note, my website has over 168,000 comments on it and I attribute that to my use of the comment reply notification plugin that I’ve used for the past couple years. Glad to see that BuddyPress has those notifications built in!
I’ll most likely add the Forum Reply Plugin that you mention r-a-y as well. Thanks for the useful post! And thank you all for your help!
Next up.. getting my BBpress skinned to look like my site and getting that darned BuddyBar to work
April 23, 2010 at 5:59 pm #74906Paul Wong-Gibbs
KeymasterPlease can we not start arguing about whether said content is NSFW. Remember, different work places have different standards.
April 23, 2010 at 5:32 pm #74899Boone Gorges
KeymasterJust to clarify what @r-a-y said: “Activity replies” are handled by BuddyPress, and are sometimes called “comments”. That’s probably where the confusion is arising. If you think of comments as a blog-only phenomenon, then BP doesn’t do any comment notification at all. You do, however, get BP notifications if someone replies to (or “comments on”) one of your activity items.
April 23, 2010 at 5:27 pm #74897r-a-y
KeymasterWhat Boone said.
Blog-related stuff is handled by WordPress.
Activity replies are handled internally by BuddyPress.
I would recommend what glamgrif mentioned and that is to disable the activity stream for blog comments and forum posts because the activity stream and blog comments / forum posts are independent from one another.
https://buddypress.org/forums/topic/faq-how-to-code-snippets-and-solutions#post-37843
You could try replacing blog comments with the activity stream:
https://wordpress.org/extend/plugins/buddypress-activity-as-blog-comments/
For forum replies, you could use a BuddyPress plugin:
https://wordpress.org/extend/plugins/buddypress-group-activity-stream-subscription/
April 23, 2010 at 5:17 pm #74896hotforwords
ParticipantBoone, that answers my question I believe.. BuddyPress will NOT email you if someone posts a comment reply on the WORDPRESS side.
Then why is the option on BuddyPress called “A member replies to an update or <b>comment</b> you’ve posted”?
Are the “comments” in BuddyPress somewhere? Are those posts in the Forum considered “comments”?
Thanks Boone!
D Cartwright, how is my show considered NSFW? I have over 300 million views on YouTube and they wouldn’t allow my show if it was not safe for work!
Thanks glamgrif! As Boone said above, I think the WordPress side comments don’t get email notifications from BuddyPress.. or is that not correct?
April 23, 2010 at 2:51 pm #74882Griffin Boyce
ParticipantHi Marina! Love the show!

Unfortunately a reply to a comment is also considered to a comment, so they’d both get sent to your email. Disabling nested comments would discourage comment replies, but this is likely the opposite of what you want. Sorry!
April 23, 2010 at 1:51 pm #74874D Cartwright
ParticipantI’d love to check the site out more to help but it kind of falls under the NSFW classification

What do you have set in http://www.hotforwords.com/wp-admin/options-discussion.php ? Do you have “Email me whenever…Anyone posts a comment” checked?
