In reply to: [Resolved] Member Role gone after update
John James Jacoby
KeymasterIt sounds like maybe you’re confusing two different things:
How the roles were added and removed.
How the users were granted those roles.I know how they got there, and how they were removed. I’m curious why your users have those roles at all.
bbPress 2.2 and beyond have their own secondary user roles, that do not mix in with WordPress’s role picker. Basically, to avoid exactly this kind of scenario, where users are left without roles at all.
bbPress 2.2.3 should be automatically granting users a forum role when they login and browse the site. Whether or not they have a WordPress role on the site shouldn’t dictate their ability to create activity stream content. The only users that can’t create content in BuddyPress are spammed or deleted users.
Do you have some other role-based custom thing happening on your site that’s interfering somewhere?

ParticipantSo, I’m asking, how all of your members were assigned that role.
I wish I could remember 🙂
I thought it was via either BuddyPress, or bbPress at one point in time. The roles the site currently has are all of the standard WP roles, and one custom one that I did via add_role.
I am running bbPress 2.2.3. Shouldn’t I see the Keymaster, Moderator, Participant, etc roles also? I do NOT have Discussion Forums activated in BuddyPress options (I am running bbPress as stand alone). Thanks

KeymasterI’m saying that BuddyPress creates several roles when you activate the Forums component, as the roles are specific to bbPress 1.x. That said, those roles never actually do anything, and likely can be safely removed.
So, I’m asking, how all of your members were assigned that role.

KeymasterBuddyPress only does this when you turn on the old version of Forums. The “Member” role is part of bbPress 1.x, but was never intended to be used anywhere.

ParticipantThe result now is that my bbpress page’s show a blanc page.
Step 3 of the BP template pack plugin has nothing to do with the bbPress plugin’s forum page showing up blank.
All probability is error in the bbPress installation/configuration process. Post each step you made after installing bbPress plugin and also info if you’ve installed Group Forums as well.

Participant@kpolkson,
There are smarter people around these forums than me, but I will try to help.It looks like you haven’t defined the $key variable or have not passed it properly.
Perhaps try digging into bp-members-functions.php and figuring out a way to extract the $key variable. See the line:
`$user_id = $wpdb->get_var( $wpdb->prepare( “SELECT user_id FROM {$wpdb->usermeta} WHERE meta_key = ‘activation_key’ AND meta_value = %s”, $key ) );`https://buddypress.svn.wordpress.org/trunk/bp-members/bp-members-functions.php

ParticipantIf you want to hide stuff but want it to be available to Google, you could use CSS and/or jQuery to hide things. Check out this post about how to add BuddyPress-specific body classes:

ParticipantOk, I’m getting this now and have some new questions.
1: How can I list all of the different blogs somewhere? Not necessarily most popular but all blogs in some form of list that people can look through.
2: How can I make some of the plugins non network? There doesn’t seem to be any option for making network available or not?
3: Same as above but for widgets.
4: I see that users can access their blogs once logged in, however, the network administrator needs to set up blogs for users. Is there a way to allow users to create their own blogs after they have registered?
5: BuddyPress – I installed BP from the network admin however, all of the plugins seem to be networked again? Is this so that blog owners can have the forums which are a part of BP or something else? I was wanting to make BP available only on the main site.
PS: I realize some of these questions are WP so no requirement to respond on those and I can post them there. Just figured I’d ask 🙂

ParticipantHello Paul,
Thank you for the input of disabling the “Discussion Forums” option in the Components tab. Doing so however makes the “Forums” tab invisible altogether, and only 3 tabs remain: Components, Pages and Settings.
Are we missing something?
Thanks in advance.
December 18, 2012 at 4:52 pm #147772In reply to: want to make compatible with bp my theme
@mercime
Participant@slkmclaren Sure, you can make the BP template files compatible with Harmony theme. Initial scan shows you only need to create 2 new files to make it work. Have to be sure though.
To begin, create a new topic in this forum re your Harmony Theme compatibilty. Open up your theme’s header.php file, copy all code and paste into pastebin.com, click submit and post the generated URL in the new topic you’ll be creating. Do the same for your theme’s page.php, index.php, sidebar.php and footer.php files. I’d like to see the whole picture.

Participant@djpaul templating is a bit confusing between bbPress (shipped with BP) for group forums and bbPress as separate plugin for a single forum. So if i understand you and the codex, i can change the bbPress template for group and/or standalone from a bbpress directory in the child theme, and in the case of the standalone option, using bbPress shortcodes ?

ParticipantSorry ! There is a plugin for nested comments, but it will only work if you use bbPress as standalone forum. Doesn’t work for group forums.

Participant@r-a-y why do we need to create brand new gmail account and then activate the plugin, why we can’t use older account? I have one almost new (3 weeks old almost virgin account) and after setting up username and password and enabled IMAP I always get this warning:
BuddyPress Reply By Email cannot initialize. Please navigate to “BuddyPress > Reply By Email” to fill in the required fields and address the webhost warnings.

ParticipantHi Chouf1,
We followed the advice given, and experimented with the settings. Finally, we uninstalled bbPress to redo the forum installation.
Now, the BP settings are as follows:
1. In Components tab, Groups option is disabled.
2. In Forums tab, a button “Uninstall Group Forums” is seen, adjacent to “Install site wide forums”. Clicking on this button leads to two new buttons – “Install Group Forums” and “Use Existing Installation”. However, when we do some other task and return to this tab, the button “Use Existing Installation” is no longer visible. Only the “Uninstall Group Forums” tab remains, adjacent to “Install site wide forums”. Which means, we are effectively unable to get rid of “Group Forums” and use only the site-wide forums.
Request members to suggest a way out. How to uninstall Group Forums and use site-wide forums only?
Thanks in advance.

@mercime
ParticipantEven then, I didn’t see any option for users to create their own blog during or after account creatio
You need to create a Network or make the single site Multisite first -> https://codex.wordpress.org/Create_A_Network If you hit some snags during the process, please post at https://wordpress.org/support/forum/multisite for assistance.
my question is more along the lines of asking if both types of sites can co-exist as one single site.
For a single WP installed e.g. at example.com, you can only create one multisite installation by default where subsites/blogs are either set up in a subdirectory or subdomain structure.
There are plugins to make each subsite into a network of its own and set up BP in each or some of the networks https://wordpress.org/extend/plugins/wp-multi-network/ or the premium Networks+ http://wpebooks.com/networks/ You should have at least a VPS or Dedicated server when you go this route.

ParticipantHi mercime,
I saw you helped buddypress users before with the alyeska theme. I have downloaded the latest version of bbpress and i have installed the alyeska theme but i dont have a child theme.
The problem is i want to make my buddypress compatible with the alyeska theme.
example of a buddypress page on my website: http://www.kleedkamerkratje.nl/teamleden/
I want to adjust the width of the page to full-width but the sidebar shows on every buddypress page. I dont want this offcourse.Lucky for me i found this forum.
I have followed your steps and got stuck in step A. I dont know what to replace in my php files. Do i copy/paste your code in the first line in these files? or do i overwrite this part
Sorry for my bad english im dutch!
I hope you can help me

ParticipantHi,
if you activate site wide forum, you have to change the default Forum Base name to something other as “forum”.
Unfortunatly, bbPress and BP use the same base name and in a BP install, BP’s forum has priority.

ParticipantSorry to bump up this thread… the problem of a registered, logged-in user not being able to create a new topic refuses to go away. We had installed group-forums first, but later uninstalled it, and went for site-wide forums. Now when a user clicks on “New Topic”, they get the message – “You are not a member of any groups so you don’t have any group forums you can post in. “, meaning perhaps that the Groups still is required to be created. How to tell BP to remove the Groups feature and get it to install site-wide forums?
Request BP gurus / experts to share their advice and experience.
Thanks in advance.
