Participant@shawn38 — the point of the thread, was not having to rename the forums base
August 8, 2012 at 12:14 pm #138788Roger Coathup
Participant@djpaul – ok, yes de-activating the forums component does the trick.
I’d tried removing the page, and selecting ‘uninstall group forums’ from the forums tab, but that wasn’t working. Btw: ‘uninstall group forums’ doesn’t appear to do anything, when you leave then return to the tab, the button has reset itself to say uninstall group forums’ again (or is perhaps just displaying the wrong text).
@mercime – yes, I’d done as you suggest on a previous site, but having to manually add shortcodes isn’t quite the same as getting the default bbPress page.
I guess your new codex entry should be updated on the ‘sitewide only’ section, to say as Paul notes: also deactivate the forums component and delete the forums page.
In general, I guess the Forums Directory page in bp-default should be renamed / better described to make it clear it’s for group forums.

KeymasterIf you’ve been unable to recreate the problem yourself, it makes it very difficult for us to recreate it. If you figure out how to recreate it, let us know.

Participant@rogercoathup After going through the Installation Wizard where a Forums page with the “forums” slug was automatically created https://mercime.files.wordpress.com/2012/08/bp16-install-03.jpg the first thing I do is to go to Settings > BuddyPress > Pages and select “none” for the Forums page and save. Then I go to Settings > Forums and make sure the archive base is “forums” and that in the BuddyPress section in same panel, made sure that the “Enable Group Forums” option is not checked. Open up the “Forums” page and I just add the bbPress shortcode/s etc
EDIT – djpaul, didn’t see you there when I answered roger’s post

KeymasterRoger, if you want to use Group Forums still, just change the name of the Page that you’ve mapped to the Forums component.
If you don’t want to use Group Forums, disable the Forums component in BuddyPress, and remove the forums Page.

Inactive@rogercoathup This is how I set it up “After you have installed site wide forums” Go to: Dashboard/Forums/Add New and name it whatever you want. Then go to Dashboard/Settings/Forums and Under “Archive Slugs” rename the Forum base to something other than forum or forums. Save it add it to your menu and you should be good to go.

Participant@mercime Thanks for the reply, answers are as follows:
* Group Forums
* Custom-built child theme based on Buddypress default theme (as I can’t replicate the problem myself I’ve been unable to test whether the fault persists when I switch themes)
* The only membership plugin I’m using is User Role Editor. I’ve used this to create a new Subscriber role I’ve called ‘Super Subscriber’ which has one extra function. However both ordinary Subscribers and Super Subscribers have reported being able to see these extra icons.
August 8, 2012 at 2:51 am #138737@mercime
Participant== This only happens when they are browsing in the Forums. ==
Group Forums or bbPress sitewide forums? What theme are you using? Also, are you using any membership plugin?
August 8, 2012 at 2:39 am #138735kmtrent
ParticipantYes, I am trying to connect with the theme and plugin support forums as well. I am pretty sure it is not a connection with Events Manager or Gravity Forms as both of these plugins are working correctly on the website right now. Found someone else to look at the back end, and hope to find a resolution. Will share it here if I discover the source of this trauma.

ParticipantI am able to manuever through the site, view forums, and create a group, but I can’t invite anyone to a group or add a friend or access my Dashboard. I have posted on every support forum I know! What code should I look for in my themes or plugins that could be causing this? IF that is the issue…
I did not have a problem until I updated Buddy Press to 1.6

ParticipantSo to allow users to subscribe to an individual forum (to be notified of a new thread) it looks like I would have to create a group for each forum and use the plugin you recommended?

Keymastertestbp.org uses both the BuddyPress and the bbPress plugins.
bbPress has its own built-in forum subscription feature; BuddyPress does not have a group forum subscription feature built-in.
However, there is a BuddyPress plugin that enables members to subscribe to a group – BP Group Email Subscription:

But I think a better approach is to create a component.

ParticipantYes…problem still occurs, even after disabling all plugs and switching themes.
Strange issue. The WLW is attributed to something with the xmlrpc.php file, and so is the JetPack connection issue. So, I assume, based on that, there’s a problem with looping through user accounts, or accessing user accounts, when displaying groups/members/forums pages.

ParticipantSorry…didn’t work.
Here’s the primary error that keeps coming up.
This webpage has a redirect loop
The webpage at http://myitforum.com/myitforumwp/community/groups/tech-books/ has resulted in too many redirects. Clearing your cookies for this site or allowing third-party cookies may fix the problem. If not, it is possibly a server configuration issue and not a problem with your computer.

Participant@r-a-y I’ll give it a shot, however, there are others posting here to the forums with the same issue as me — so it *can* be duplicated.
August 7, 2012 at 3:39 pm #138643notpoppy
ParticipantI should add, not all the menu options which could appear do. For example, when logged on as admin I can see the plugin menu notifying me of one plugin to update, but this does not appear to the subscribers who are being shown the menu options.

ParticipantWell, huh. I already do use a dummy page and am having the issue. Those top pages work fine, its once you click to go beyond the top pages (activity stream, members, groups, forums) is when the 404 and unending redirection error exhibits.

ParticipantThrow out the idea of having a page structure like this:
Activity Stream (parent)
– Members
– Groups
– ForumsInstead, use a ‘dummy’ page or whatever you call it as the parent page:
Dummy page (parent)
– Activity Stream
– Members
– Groups
– ForumsThe idea is to assign the dummy page with your desired base slug.
Though, you might notice that if you open the dummy page you’re left out with an empty page. Therefore if you want you can also redirect the dummy page to Activity Stream page so that the dummy page will be inaccessible.
At least at the moment, this is better than having to deal with the 404 pages right

MemberThanks @karmatosed
My problem is similar to that posted by @r-a-y but with a difference that I am not using activity page as the parent page.
I am not using activity page as the parent page to other pages but I still get a 404 for profile pages, forum threads, groups etc.
blog.com/members/username
blog.com/bb/forum-thread-title
blog.com/groups/group-title
I can open the members page, forums page and groups page but then clicking on any members profile on member’s page or on a thread title in forum or on a group title in the groups page leads to 404. Everything was working perfectly before the 1.6 update.
