KeymasterJust tried this, I don’t get a white screen.
What errors do you get in your server log?
March 10, 2010 at 1:46 am #67502arnonel
Participantthe structure is in place
I copied /groups/index.php to /groups/index.php
The groups folder in the parent theme has a whole bunch of other stuff, which i left…
that gives me a white screen….
If i copy all the other stuff, it works… but that kinda defeats the whole point, doesnt it?

KeymasterWhat errors do you get?
You have to retain the directory structure when copying things over to your child theme.

Participant+1 to having forum categories on a per group basis.
I already run a number of vb sites with hundreds of thousands of users and would love to someday bring that platform to wordpress/bp.
The problem is that my forums are huge (millions of posts) and without separation, it would be impossible using group forums.
I’d rather not have to create a separate group just to have a separate forum, as then I would end up with hundreds of groups (one forum I run has about a hundred or so subforums all are very active). That would only diminish the value of using groups imho.
I just don’t see the feasibility of doing it this way.
For instance, how in the world would you convert a site like vbulletin.org forums over to bp groups?
Even with very fancy templating it would still not work properly
(Yes, I know, groups are really just uber powerful forum categories… for a lack of a better way of putting it)

ParticipantIt would seem possible to have forums separate from groups, but have the group be able to create a “category” of forum posts that could be displayed within the group and separately. Not sure if bbPress supports this, but when I messed around with PHPBB it would. Simply about filtering and display.
Frankly, that’s what I thought was in BP until I did some digging.

KeymasterHey gang,
Just moderated my first thread; removed some sentences due to topic irrelevancy, but the main gist is still there.
Going back to stwc’s initial post:
– forum inline attachments – Boone has a port of _ck_’s old plugin working for the most part
– quote – i’ll take a look at this one when i have some time
– forum whispers – not really interested in this one… maybe someone else can take a look at this?
– gui for textarea – Boone has a TinyMCE plugin for this
Peter, as you well know, you can disable forum integration. Privacy is an issue, yes. There’s no complete solution right now (patiently waiting for Jeff’s plugin), but one solution I’ve tried is Jehy’s Registered Users Only 2 plugin. Though, I did modify it a tiny bit for BP needs. I can post the modified code if anyone’s interested.

ParticipantIf one uses both a separate standalone, and the built-in Buddypress forum, then does not one adds is yet another complication/confusion as regards searchability … or rather the lack of searchability … typical of WPMU/BP installs!?!
And is left faces the uphill struggle of skinning it all to match?
Let’s face it … the universal consensus or feedback is that it would be better to allow the creation of forums independent of groups.
I have not read one voice in support of enforcing groups for forums and cannot see the purpose in doing so.

ParticipantSG is a great platform initially when you want to start up a social network.
I have been with them for 3 months. Great software and easy to use but there are MANY limitaions. YOu don’t host anything yourself you you are reliant on their servers which as of late have been terrible. Lot’s of problems, slow page loads etc and issues with widgets not working.
They have just moved data centres so that should improve.
The biggest problem I have is not having access to the content my users create. the vaule of our sites is often user generated material such as forums.
Yes of course SG is secure but what happens if we build a network with a couple of thousand users. they may create thousands of posts which give our site value. Just say SG end up having problems with their servers or indeed don’t last out and aren’t in business down the line. All of our content is gone.
Also you are pretty much limited to their widgets for chat etc which are lacking.
Some good stuff to test out your niche market but I am looking at migrating to BuddyPress in th enext couple of months. I’m putting everything together now.
If you have any questions just ask
Cheers.

ParticipantLet me ask you though: what is the single most-used, most-trafficked, important element of this very site we’re on right now for most of us?
Hint: it’s this (relatively feature-poor) forum.
Different people have different needs, and the forum component of BBpress is an essential one for many users of BP. My thinking was that this thread could be about not just possible plugins for that area, but things that people would love to see in plugin form for any area of BP. I’ve tried over the last 6 or 8 months to give as much back to this community here by helping others as I’ve taken or solicited help from them. I’m not asking for help with BBpress. A wishlist is just that — nobody gives a good goddamn, mostly, but occasionally somebody plays the angel.

ParticipantI find that the greatest gaps in functionality for the new site I’m putting together is in the integrated BBpress forums
BBpress is not part of Buddypress -> BBpress forums
When I ask about core BP issues here, I’m often referred to the WP or WPMU forums. But questions about BBpress are apparently OK. Why? I don’t get it. Personally I don’t see what forums have to do with a social network. You don’t see Facebook and LinkedIn integrating an oldfashioned linear forum.
So my wishlist? Remove forum integration so I don’t have to comment stuff out or have one more item in an already way too cluttered admin area.
And things like adding (parts of) TinyMCE to textareas you can do yourself if you know some basics of theme customization and read the instructions in the TinyMCE documentation.

ParticipantI actually do run my business from the root domain.
1.customer goes to root.com to register and signup for a site.
2. customer is given a subdomain.root.com blog which I domain mapp to their own domain
That is normal wp operation.
Where it gets sticky:
1. customer whose site is actually subdomain.root.com turns on group blogs and tries to create one…. that creates subdomain.subdomain.root.com
see the problem?
It’s pretty much the exact same type of situation that wordpress.com does.
1. I go to wp.com and register my site, subdomain.wordpress.com
2. If they had group blogs, I would go in and create one, it would create subdomain.subdomain.wordpress.com
I hope this makes it clearer, how I am actually doing what wpmu was intended to do. I run everything off of the root domain, so every customer is subdomain.root.com
The only ‘solution’ I see without having wpmu fixed, would be to give complete fresh installs of wpmu to each client, so they are actually on a root.com instead of a subdomain.
That completely kills the entire concept of wpmu (one codebase for me to maintain). I would have to maintain all the installs separately, which would suck bigtime.
Anyhow, it is not an error with your plugin, but rather an error with wpmu core. I posted question in their forums, and if I can find the ticket system for mu I will report it as well.

Memberim currently using buddypress and phpbb…actually still testing buddypress at this point. the problem is that users need to log into both separately, there is no bridge built in. ive tried several different plugins and bridges but they havent worked right with the 1.2 buddypress version yet. i would actually switch to bbpress if i could integrate my current phpbb forum into it.

KeymasterRead this to grab the data of a xprofile field:
https://buddypress.org/forums/topic/editing-the-core-elements-of-buddy-press#post-41651
You have two ways to add the xprofile field:
1) Hook into the profile action to display custom data (preferred)
In your child theme’s functions.php, add the following:
function my_bp_xprofile_about_me() {
bp_profile_field_data('field=About Me');
}
add_action('bp_before_member_header_meta','my_bp_xprofile_about_me');This method is preferred because you won’t have to worry about theme updates.
2) Copy /bp-themes/bp-default/members/single/member-header.php to a child theme and make your changes there
Manually add the bp_profile_field_data(‘field=About Me’) line to the file.

MemberYesterday I discovered that if I use the links from the last page of bp template thingie:
Navigation Links
You may want to add new navigation tabs or links to your theme to link to BuddyPress directory pages. The default set of links are:
* Activity: http://templeofthewayoflight.org/wp/activity/
* Members: http://templeofthewayoflight.org/wp/members/
* Groups: http://templeofthewayoflight.org/wp/groups/
* Forums: http://templeofthewayoflight.org/wp/forums/
* Register: http://templeofthewayoflight.org/wp/register/ (registration must be enabled)
These do work and use my customized index.php from the folders in my theme file. I have no idea where the bar gets the urls and why it ignores my cutomisation.
I might not want to use the bar anyway, but even if I create a menu of my own I would like to be able to use the more specified links in the bar aside from the standard ones, ie all the subthings, and just copying and paste those obviously wont work.
Is there any widget one can use that has the same things that are in the buddypress bar?

Keymasterstwc – I spent some time when I first ported that plugin to make inline images work, but I couldn’t manage to do it in the same way that the original bbPress plugin does. I kept coming up against problems with the way headers are sent to the browser, which is, to put it mildly, not my area of expertise

I have literally not even glanced at the plugin on BP 1.2+. I’ll have to do so soon, though, as not having forum attachments will be a stumbling block for me to upgrade my production site from BP 1.1.3.
As always, I’ll keep everyone updated via these forums and http://teleogistic.net.
