ParticipantI like to try any plugin and, hei…
@Dwenaus, this Rate Forum Posts plugin looks cool.It is fine in my localhost but I found this error in live site
http://iluni-ftui.org/groups/situs-iluni/forum/
WordPress database error You have an error in your SQL syntax;
check the manual that corresponds to your MySQL server version for the right syntax to use near
‘WHERE object_type = ‘bb_post’ AND meta_key = ‘rfp_rating’ AND object_id = 1′ at line 1 for query
SELECT meta_value FROM WHERE object_type = ‘bb_post’ AND meta_key = ‘rfp_rating’ AND object_id = 1
made by require, require_once, do_action, call_user_func_array, bp_core_do_catch_uri, load_template, require_once, locate_template, load_template, require_once, do_action, call_user_func_array, rfp_after_topic_title, rfp_get_post_rating_signed, rfp_get_post_rating
It solved by adding code below in rate.inc.php
require_once ABSPATH.’bb-config.php’;
global $bb_table_prefix, $bb_meta_table;
$bb_meta_table = $bb_table_prefix . ‘meta’;
Thanks for the plugin.
Now it works. But since I’m still a WP noob.
I don’t know if it is politically correct.

ParticipantI would like move certain postings in groups to other groups including the replies on the postings, is that possible?
A “move button” Hmmm I guess I will post an RFC in TRAC.

ParticipantThe upgrade from 1.x.x to 1.2 can break your theme, because previous themes are completely compatible with 1.2 What you try is installing the backwards compatibility plugin.
I also had many issues when I went through this process. You could even try completely removing Buddypress plugin and then reinstalling it and reactivating it. (back up your themes first though)

ParticipantAndrea, I am talking about fresh installations, as intact as they come — before I could have meddled with any settings or added any plugin (other than BP). You must have noticed that the extra slash comes somewhere in the middle; not immediately after the WP folder name:
/zebra/members//settings/general/ was not found on this serve
I installed WP thrice, each time using a new MySql database, but installation was done through cPnale Fantastico. Do you think that could have made a difference?
Frankly, I am least interested in blogs. I settled for WP because of BP, just for BP. I thought, with the social network and a forum around, I could use a single blog for all my CMS needs. The intended site is for reproducing the weekly articles I write for a newspaper column.
Regards.

ParticipantI left the actual upgrading to my programmer, but those were the exact instructions I provided. I don’t know for sure if that was done. Would this problem be related to the process?

KeymasterYou should upgrade to BP 1.1.3, before upgrading to BP 1.2.1.

Participant@Dwenaus Nevermind, I just fount the Rate Forum Posts settings under the Buddypress menu in the WP back-end. That seems like a natural place to me to put setting for Buddypress plugins, but this is the first one I’ve installed to do that — the other’s I’ve tried all add their specific settings under the general Settings area. Thanks again for the great work.

ParticipantGreat plugin, @Dwenaus ! I just upgraded, and it’s working fine, but you mention “admin options” and the Readme says, “admin screen to change karma levels, and post highligting [sic] and diminishing values”, but I can’t seem to find the admin options. Is there a admin page in the WP backend, or just a config file. Thanks.

ParticipantScenario:
1. User uploads a video to their blog on my wpmu install. (could be subdomain blog or domain mapped blog)
2. Another user sees the video on another users blog and wants to embed it into either their group/forum or activity stream.
Brings up the question:
How do you ‘whitelist’ the wpmu install so that any of my user blogs are ‘pre-approved’ for oembed so the above scenario works?

r-a-y
KeymasterIt does not work to use a standalone forum because then you lose all the group making aspects of Buddypress.
You do not lose all group making aspects by using this approach.
You can use both BP group forums and your external version of bbPress at the same time.
There will be some duplication in your external version of bbPress. You’ll need to find a way to address this issue. One way is to hide the group forums in your external bbPress. I did a writeup on this a few weeks ago; I’ll provide the link to those who want to read it.

ParticipantIt does not work to use a standalone forum because then you lose all the group making aspects of Buddypress.
- • BBpress does not skin to match Buddypress easily or well
• They do not integrate together deeply.
• You end up with two admin backends.
• Plugins do not work across the board etc.
In short, the skin approach is just faking it. It is not real. It is just a facade. I know because I have done it for years and it goes against my sense of integrity. It looks like a real website but it isn’t. And it is just all held by rubber bands behind the scenes.
March 5, 2010 at 7:24 pm #66918r-a-y
KeymasterThere are numerous threads on this.
The basic steps are:
1) install an external version of bbPress
2) integrate it with WP(MU)
3) setup your forum categories in this external bbPress
3) theme it to match your site

ParticipantI installed the group plugin, and then added another member to a public group. I even bumped the member to a moderator.
That part worked perfectly, but there is one small issue.
On the groups activity page, it says user ‘x’ joined the group. The ‘x’ is the proper name, however just to the left of the username is my avatar, and not his.
example:
http://shawngaffney.anointed.net/groups/public-test-group/
first activity says ‘steve’ joined, yet the avatar is my avatar, not his, and the avatar also links to my account not his. That will make it a bit confusing to users?
**cross posted this on the wordpress.org download page forum as well**

Participant… or sell them them something they know they don’t want.
Yes, I think you need to do more idiot testing … you are forgetting that as a techie you see and get things newcomers dont.
• Its about clarity and simplicity.
We plan to use Buddypress for a national NPO. It has local ‘groups’. Fine, a forum for each local group work well.
People think of “groups” as ‘Groups’.
- We make a group for “tech support” … everyone wanting tech support has to join it where it would make more sense for only the ‘tech support group’ to be members giving advice to others (like groups or ranks in most forums).
A non-tech person just wants to post to a general forum … you start forcing them to have to decide one forum or another and then they don’t know where to post when they have something that does not fit.
We make a group for “newcomers” … people make their first post and then get stuck with the label for the rest of their membership.
Each time any activity happens, it all pops up in the ‘activity’.
- Why does the limitation need to exist?
Yes, partly it is nomenclature. But, partly, it is an unnecessary rigidity or encumbrance. Being forced to do it this way.
Yes, it may not be a problem for developers to get but, yes, it is a problem for non-techie users. I know that. I have tested it. They don’t get it. it puts them off.
As with the removal of the admin interface and plugin ability, effort has gone in to *downgrade* BBpress not enhance it and that goes against the grain.
“Groups” are groups … not sub-forums.

That can be done at example.com/forums and using the search form there.
Unfortunately, activity stream search doesn’t exist at the moment.

AFAIK, this chat plugin is the only one to support BP groups as well.
Some people like the look and feel of Facebook’s chat; there’s a whole thread dedicated to this here (if you’re interested):

ParticipantWell, it’s an interesting point. Non-members cannot post replies to forums but they can reply to updates. To my mind, they should not be unless they are auto joined (as with forums) Thoughs?

ParticipantHi All.
I’m embarrassed that my question is almost infantile…but how do you create a FORUM within a GROUP??? In the Admin section of a given Group I have the following menu choices, none of which seem appropriate:
Home
Admin
Members
Send Invites
Edit Details
Group Settings
Group Avatar
Manage Members
Delete Group
Forgive me if I am missing something, but I’d appreciate any help with this matter.
Thank you!
