ParticipantI haven’t done a thorough check, but what about BBPress Direct Access (as pointed out by Andy) and BBPress plugins?

KeymasterIn the current theme setup, no… So you’re not missing anything. There is no general “New Topic” page mostly because the number of forums that people can create by being able to create their own groups can grow to be pretty enormous.
It’s the difference between http://testbp.org/forums and http://testbp.org/bbpress/
The first link is obviously the familiar look of forums in BP1.1, the second link is what the TestBP sites’ bbPress looks like without any taming or control. There are 11,100 groups on that site alone, most of which have test forums. If there was a general “New Topic” page (like http://testbp.org/bbpress/?new=1) you’ll see you just have a select drop down list of 10,000 forums to place your topic in, which isn’t really an effective way to categorize the discussions when displayed in that way.
I think when people adapt to this method of user/group/topic centric forums versus a top-down categorical list of forums, we’ll see some unique and interesting setups.

Participantthanks..yes, I noticed that, but if someone goes to the forum (and not to a specific group) they don’t see any way to post a topic….should there be a way?

KeymasterIf the group forum is an “open forum” meaning it is not hidden or private, then you will automatically join the group when you post a reply or create a topic in it.

Participantthanks..ok, so this is a weird concept of a forum since it excludes members who want to belong to the community and not want to be in a group. I hope someone changes this is the next build.

ParticipantThanks..actually, I meant the folder you specified (so the files were in the correct folder). I just deactivated a plugin and it seems to be working right now…will wait until later to make sure that was it. thanks again.

ParticipantJust upgraded to buddypress 1.1 beta and I can say that it is really great! With the 1 click integration with bbpress, it is really good! But 1 question, can I use this 1-click integration to create a site wide forum just like here in buddypress.org, wherein the forum is not just a collection of all forum posts from the different forums used in buddypress components (primarily in Groups). Hope you could help me out on how to do this. Thanks in advance!

ParticipantBecause I need it and I don’t want spend much time getting into it, I just use the static way. May be not the correct way to do it, but for me it’s working.
<script type=”text/javascript”>
function check_search_url() {
var form = document.getElementById(‘search-form’);
var which = document.getElementById(‘search-which’);
var terms = document.getElementById(‘search-terms’);
if( which.selectedIndex == 0 ) {
form.setAttribute(“action”,”http://yourdomain.com/?s=”+terms.value) ;
}
}
</script>
<form id=”search-form” method=”post” action=”http://yourdomain.com/search”>
<input type=”text” value=”” name=”search-terms” id=”search-terms”/>
<select id=”search-which” name=”search-which”>
<option value=”blog”>Blog</option>
<option value=”blogs”>Blogs</option>
<option value=”members”>Mitglieder</option>
<option value=”groups”>Gruppen</option>
<option value=”forum”>Forum</option>
</select>
<input type=”submit” onclick=”check_search_url()” value=”Suche” id=”search-submit” name=”search-submit”/>
</form>

Participant@Burkie: snaps is an interesting forum. I’m building something similar for journalists. A couple questions:
1. How did you display profile field groups beyond “base” ? I never see those displayed, except when logged-in as admin or by the profile-owner.
2. What do you use to create a portfolio link to photos? I have a number of photographers and offering a portfolio would be a popular feature.

KeymasterHi
Yeah, if you’ve installed from the .zip, you need to upload bbpress into place manually.

Jeff Sayre
ParticipantYou are talking about the saving of forum threads. This should be asked/suggested in the bbPress support forums. Even though bbPress is utilized by BuddyPress, it still is its own, separate plugin.
September 18, 2009 at 11:30 pm #52736In reply to: testbp demo site's forum
Jeff Sayre
ParticipantYes, both testbp.org and BuddyPress.org use bbPress. You need to customize your bbPress theme. Search the forums here for “bbPress theme”.
September 18, 2009 at 12:24 am #52704Jeff Sayre
ParticipantWhich version of BuddyPress are you running?
If you’re using 1.1-beta, then the bp-sn-framework and bp-default directories need to be moved into /wp-content/themes/.
If using an earlier version, then you need to move bphome into /wp-content/themes/ and bpmember into /wp-content/bp-themes/
Also, more suggestions about how to tackle your particular error message can be found here:
https://buddypress.org/forums/topic/buddypress-plugins-and-theme-not-loading
Just one note, if you get to the stage of deleting BuddyPress and starting over with its install, please make sure you deactivate it first before deleting it.

ParticipantIt is not an amateurish question at all. But since BuddyPress v1.1-beta was just released, the old two-theme system is being phased out. Going forward, BP will use a parent/child theme architecture. It is a more powerful, flexible theming environment.
Since you are using a custom, premium theme (Woo Themes), you should ask them for support.

Please do not double post. Use the same thread.
I’m going to close this thread as your original post should do.
September 17, 2009 at 6:52 pm #52674In reply to: BuddyPress Privacy Component: An Update
Jeff Sayre
ParticipantOne step at a time. My Privacy Component is a user-centric solution. It is not currently designed to offer Site Admins a way to selectively exclude certain classes of visitors. Perhaps in a future version that could be added, but I do not see that as being of primary importance to a site’s users.
As David says above, there is nothing “flawed” with BuddyPress. BP is still in its infancy. It has a ways to grow but has come a very long way in a short amount of time–thanks to the wonderful spirit and contributions of BP’s open source community!
In fact, in my opinion, BP has a much stronger core foundation, a far superior support and developer community, and is significantly more flexible and easier to customize than Elgg. But, let’s not start a platform war here. This is a BuddyPress forum and suggestions to improve BP are always welcome.
You of course are free to choose whichever platform best suits your needs. But a full-blown ACL system, although possible, is not necessarily practical.
As far as the specifics of access control in BP, please reread my post above:

ParticipantReplying to myself… I did a forum search and this should do the trick. A simple plugin to make BP components only visible to logged in users.
