ParticipantYes, that is right.
The only thing left in the bbpress table bb_posts is the code and /code in < and > brackets.

Let me check this…

KeymasterWhen you say a new BuddyPress install, do you mean a complete fresh new install of BuddyPress, allowing a separate database and user tables for each sub domain? If so, that’s a little outside the scope of what this forum provides.
You might want to try talking to some server admins and see about maybe having a VPS setup, or some kind of reseller account?

InactiveOMG OMG OMG OMG! I fixed it!! I went back and looked at my error logs and I was getting
SoftException in Application.cpp:544: Directory “/home/beerandb/public_html/wp-content” is writeable by group, referer: http://lasvegas.beerandblog.com/
I was also getting that for the bp-themes folder. So I changed them from 777 to 755. I also found that I had an old “members-themes” directory in wp-content, which I deleted. And viola! It’s all better

I looked into this stuff further because of these two threads. Thanks everyone for your help with this! First time I used this forum for help and it totally paid off!!

ParticipantEverything worked fine for me:
– news users are automatically added to the forum
– creating groups also creates a forum topic (not sure if I want that)
but the problem is, it doesn’t integrates the bbpress in the buddypress-theme. The forum is in its own theme (Kakumei).
Shouldn’t it integrate with buddypress?
Thanks,
Eddie

ParticipantDoes any of these instructions change for the newly released BuddyPress 1.0?
I got around to installing buddypress and it looks great but was bummed to realize that the forums don’t work right of the bat. Are there any updated (simpler) instructions now that ver 1.0 is out?
May 3, 2009 at 11:54 am #44247In reply to: Language translation problems
Bloggsbe
ParticipantAFAIK, you have to use the same language in WPMU as in BuddyPress. BuddyPress gets the language setting from WPMU. There is some info about the greek WPMU translation here, but I don’t read greek, so it’s not necessarily the info you need

But you’ve named the file(s) right, you only need the .mo file in your
bp-languagesfolder.So basically you need to use the same language in WPMU that you want to use in BP. So get the greek WPMU translation, upload it to you WPMU install, and change the language in you admin section…

Participant@Sgrunt: Was your problem by any chance related to which I’m still having, documented at https://buddypress.org/forums/topic.php?id=2314 ? I’m continuesly getting 404’s as soon as I use the old buddypress database on the new install. The “save” didn’t help at all..
The only known way of fixing this is manually inserting ALL articles and parameters by hand from one to another database requiring 2 builds to work parallel. This is heavy for just an upgrade .. what will it be with RC3 etc..?

ParticipantAs lot of people said in this forum, making a theme like that is really simple if you use the skeleton theme, it’s just css.
Integrate this theme as andy did is more difficult

Participanti’ve the same issue: only the home page is displayed, but members, groups, profile pages…everything leads to a 404. I’m testing it locally with XAMPP.
I’ve made a manual upgrade, and i’m using default themes both for home and profiles.
this is the path of the theme i’m using: wp-content bp-themes bpmember
note: i’ve tried the solutions posted here: https://buddypress.org/forums/topic.php?id=2457 with no success
note: i’m running the wpmu 2.71 zip (downloaded 1 hour ago)
May 3, 2009 at 12:33 am #44216In reply to: Plugin: PmWiki in Buddypress.
ostro
ParticipantHi Tim! I think that the plugin is looking good at the moment. Even if it’s only in it’s starting phase. Personally I would prefer a stronger integration, although this probably can be done with skins it would e neat if the wiki loaded inside bp much like group forums. But it’s hardly very important right now. I have a question though.
Will it be available for download soon or is the plugin not meant for the public? Looking forward to being able to tinker with it on my testinstall of buddypress.
PS. As the plugin works now each wiki can have a wire. The user experience is pretty much the same as a group except it does not have a forum. And if I understood everything correct the plugin is based on buddypress groups. The difference right now between placing the wiki inside a group making a “group wiki” and how it is now is that the current solution basically creates 2 types of groups, one with forum function and one with wiki function.
As a wikis main function is often to document something it is usually tied to something. A community or a project, or if you will, a group. The nature of this documentation is fairly static and in depth, as in once the documentation is done it covers most aspects on the subject and changes very little. A wiki page is often written by many people.
Compared to that a blog is quite different. While a blog can be tied to something else it is tied much more loosely and can in fact stand on its own. The nature of a blogpost also differs from a wiki page in many ways. They tend to focus on the specialised and recent. You seldom return to a blogpost to edit it, you write a new one instead. A blogpost is often written by one person.
This is why I think merging the two different types of groups so that wikis appear inside groups instead of having them appear inside their own group category would be preferable.
While running blog on your own makes perfect sense, doing the same with a wiki does not. Especially on a social network site. If you simply just want to use a wiki-engine, simply just install one.
This is just some reflections I had on the plugin.
But then again elloandfriends is your project and you know best what kind of solutions will work for it. I also have no idea of the technical difficulties involved. But as for the plugin as such I think it would be more user friendly and create less confusion with wikis integrated in groups.

ParticipantJeff, I can’t afford a VPS. I have to go with this, but the service is much better than is usual. Think of Elgg, it requres so many things including very new MySql and PHP versons and several other stuff. My HS guys took care of it and installed it themselves for me, though it’s not under the “Script Software’.
As for WPMU, first I tried to install myself allowing all permissions for the database concerned. I had a problem, and asked the help of my HS. They installed it for me. I asked them whether they had to do anything special at their end for the installation. They said NO, just make it 0777 for wp-content and it would work. It did.
In fact, they removed several WPMU folders at my request, but at the time I had not realized that all of them were WPMU folders. I was frantically installing, deleting and re-installing all kkind of CMS and SNW softwares. When I realized it, I posted a note at a WPMU forum. The rest you know.
What happens is when I click a folder, inside I see wp-content, and then a blog folder, it goes on like that until a 2 or 2009, and then I get the error message. I go on changing prmissions as I go along, but at last I reach a point where I am not allowed to change the permission setting. Anyway, I am going to ask my HS what’s the problem involved. I will let you know.
Thnaks for your long conerned reply.

KeymasterIf your web server is hosted, talk to your host.
If it’s your own server – what OS are you on? Reinstalling PHP to support GD is pretty much beyond the scope of this forum, but we might be able to point you in the right direction

ParticipantAndrea is right.
You can either take the current BP home and member themes and customize them to integrate blogs as you wish, or you can use the BuddyPress Skeleton Template Theme files to build your own blog-centric custom BP themes.

ParticipantIs the height parameter a must, or can you leave it like (800, )?
No. You cannot leave the parameter blank. You could pass a variable into the space if you wanted, but it must have something.
When I tried to remove one WPMU folder I got the error message
“500 Can’t Remove Directory. Permission denied”.
A few questions:
- Have you checked the files / folder permission on your WPMU install? You should be able to delete everything that you personally upload to your public_html. Although, with shard hosting, there could be issues with apache owning certain files and folders.
- Are you using an automatic WordPress Mu install option from your hosting company? I’m not sure if any hosting companies offer that option for WPMU, but it’s worth asking.
The answer I got was WPMU does something at the Apache level and that I can’t do much about it unless mine is a dedicated hosting service.
- Have you contacted tech support for your hosting service provider and asked for their help? This WPMU forum post may prove useful in talking with tech support: https://mu.wordpress.org/forums/topic.php?id=3173&replies=3#post-19388
- Have you considered changing hosting companies or upgrading to a more robust hosting plan? A VPS perhaps?
WPMU really does not do too well on a cheap hosting plan. Here is sage advice from andrea_r, a WPMU guru: http://wpmututorials.com/news/choosing-a-host/
I have a new installation now.
I think the width problem is to be fixed elsewhere.
Please consider these:
As far as figuring out what’s going on with your CSS, this is where the Firebug tool comes in very handy! It takes awhile to learn how to use it. But once you do, you can determine where a given div or class is pulling its instructions from and then temporarily override those selector parameters within Firebug and see how that affects the overall layout. It is a very powerful and useful tool!
Concerning CSS issues with IE6: my personal opinion is to not worry about supporting that browser anymore. It is just a big pain and too much work for too little return–less than 20% usage ( http://www.w3schools.com/browsers/browsers_stats.asp ). Again, that is just my opinion.

ParticipantInteresting things, Jeff.
Thanks for introducing Firebug and Web Developer Tools. Imagine my plight of going to every file through the Cpanel file manager (which has no Back button!).

<script type=“text/javascript†language=“javascriptâ€>
window.resizeTo(800, 600)
</script>
Is the height parameter a must, or can you leave it like (800, )?

I usually use the FTP service from My Network Places in my Windows-XP.
When I tried to remove one WPMU folder I got the error message
“500 Can’t Remove Directory. Permission denied”.
I had posted this problem at a WPMU forum.
The answer I got was WPMU does something at the Apache level
and that I can’t do much about it unless mine is a dedicated hosting service.
From what you said I gather that my work is to be done somewhere up,
not under public-html at the folder level, right?
