ParticipantI can never get the cool designs in my head to work out on the screen.
So I’m setting out to bp other themes.

Participant@ Andrea: If a newer and better version of a theme which you will base your work off is coming out soon, wouldn’t you rather wait than making the theme right away?
Seeing what has changed from the old buddypress parent theme and the new one, you might as well call it a redo.

ParticipantIf we have themes based on the current default (which I understood was still going to hang around as “classic”) would we really have to “re-do” a whole new theme? Really?
I don’t mean a child theme per se, because a child theme of the current default could just have it’s parent template name changed, if the original one is changed. That’s a simple fix.
So… if I built a new theme based on the current default’s elements, and it’s staying around, I don’t see yet how it;s not going to work, you know?
I can see maybe missing out on any new features, but that;’s a long way from needing to completely redo themes (like last time…).

Participant“First the buddy press plug ins don’t install correctly until you go and reset a value in the wp_sitemeta table in the database. “
If you had to do that, then something’s up with your install.
“could you not distribute a default theme with the plugin or at least mention it somewhere? “
uh, they did. There’s a parent theme in there, a default child theme and in the instructions both in the readme.txt and all over this site it explains how to use it.

ParticipantThen I’ll have to delay my themes till january as well, I’m not going to build my themes so that I’ll have to redo them when the new theme is out.

Participantas per Andys comment at testbp.org :
quote on new BP-default theme:
It wont be too long. I am working on this, it will more than likely be checked in on Monday or Tuesday. It will still need work done on it though even after that.
quotes on BP 1.2:
Signs currently point to late January for 1.2, but I will be able to say more accurately when a beta is released. This theme will be checked into trunk next week so you can start looking at it then. There will be more updates and changes, but hopefully nothing too drastic.
It is not going to be before Christmas, there is still much left to do and there needs to be at least a few weeks of beta testing. I would say January is looking more likely. It was going to be December before I decided it was important to change the theme for 1.2. That has bumped it back.

ParticipantSecond the post of D Cartwright, I’ve been refreshing the trac every few hours to check if the theme is in there yet. Can’t wait to get crackin’ with it.

ParticipantIf I’m correct, that theme is a child theme so it doesn’t necessarily need a index.php because it uses the index.php from the parent theme if the child theme doesnt have a index.php.
@ fritzthecat: The avenue theme is made by a buddypress user and not by the core developers. So if it doesn’t work, don’t blame buddypress.

ParticipantSame here – it’s missing the index.php page.
Shouldn’t the template be tested before being distributed from the main site? First the buddy press plug ins don’t install correctly until you go and reset a value in the wp_sitemeta table in the database. Then you have to download a BP enable theme – could you not distribute a default theme with the plugin or at least mention it somewhere? Then the random theme i pick doens’t even work because is missing something as basic as an index.php.
I know this is a free project etc, but how is one supposed to trust you if you can’t even get the basics right?

ParticipantHi everyone.
Is there any update on when this is going into trac? I’m not trying to put any pressure on Andy or complain but for some reason I thought I’d read that it was likely to go on there this weekend sometime.
Any news or updates that I’m not aware of maybe?

Personally I don’t see why this is better than all those other wordpress themes.

ParticipantHmm, perhaps I will just try to import user accounts then…
Regarding the FTP server, I don’t know, I have root access and can do practically everything on the server, however, for some reason I cannot get rid of these old files and directories.
EDIT: Looks like the uploaded DB deactivated my custom theme, so all I had to do was reactivate it and the site is back up now
. So far so good. Thanks everyone.

ParticipantNo need for a plugin… just make your own copy of the registration template in your child theme and delete the optional fields. Or maybe even just use CSS to hide them.
December 12, 2009 at 10:20 pm #58561dwpers
Participant@Xevo and @DJPaul – I’ve tired both of these solutions, looks like I’ll have to contact my host, however, since I’m on a dedicated server, it’s harder to get support from GoDaddy for some reason

@DJPaul – I’ll see if I can import everything through phpMyAdmin and not lose any data!
@Andrea_r – By upgrading, I meant I decided to start over by deleting the DB and everything off the FTP and starting fresh, since I mistakenly edited the core files of the previous version of MU/BP and didn’t make it into a theme, so all my work was broken anyways for the new version.
Thanks for the help everyone
