ParticipantLook up ‘locate_template()’ function in the WP codex as that would explain how things work, it ties in to the WP template hierarchy in that locate_template first looks for the path designated in the stylesheetpath (child theme) if not found there it then searches the templatepath (parent dir) ‘true’ or ‘false’ just designate how the file is required into the template ‘require’ or ‘require_once’

ModeratorIf you want it to use the child theme template you simply have that file in the child theme. You don’t have to link in the parent it simply will look to child first.

I added ‘post’ because the theme does not have a sidebar file, theme description says it’s dynamic, the post file was the easiest to understand on how the sidebar works.
the theme is too complicated, i’m only using it because the UI is superb and it’s responsive.
this is the website i’m working on: http://inspire.org.ng

ParticipantThe bad news …waking up at half past 6, on my day off, and seeing this message; therefore instantly activating my brain. The good news …the problem is fixed before breakfast. YOU ARE A LEGEND! You are a legend I had tried renaming my theme folder and even tried naming the plugin folder (which doesn’t work as too many things call the plugins) so I was at a loose-end and about to rebuild. However, I was confident that my custom functions file was clean, despite calls for the groups (as they were all contained in “if”s …So I began naming all of the plugins that controlled groups in buddypress the two in question were “Buddypress group control” & “buddypress groups extra” I now have groups re-enabled and also know how to safely disable it. THANK YOU!

Participant@garrickbs Open up your theme’s header.php, copy all code, paste code in pastebin.com, click submit, and post the generated URI here. Do the same for your theme’s page.php, index.php, sidebar.php and footer.php files, I want to see the whole picture.

Participantsounds like you have something in your theme’s function.php (or perhaps a plugin) that’s using a groups function without checking whether it exists.
Try renaming the folder for your theme, and if that doesn’t work, check through your plugins folder for an obvious suspect and rename.

ParticipantYou will be creating two new files, header-buddypress.php and sidebar-buddypress.php
If you’ve revised any of the BP template files transferred to your modernize theme folder in server during the BP Compatibility process, please delete the 6 BP folders transferred to your modernize theme folder in server – /activity, /blogs, /forums, /members, /groups, /register – then re-run Appearance > BP Compatibility again to make sure that you have clean template files.

Participant@abid-khan
– Deactivate the theme you were using when BP was activated by renaming theme folder in server e.g. wp-content/themes/mythemefolder-xx
– Go to wp-admin. If you still cannot access wp-admin then deactivate BuddyPress plugin folder in server by renaming the plugin folder wp-content/plugins/buddypress-xxOctober 6, 2012 at 5:16 pm #143076Rahatlin

ParticipantYou need to compare the markup used by your choice of theme on a page such as page.php to a BP page such as mentioned /activity/index.php your chosen theme dictates the markup that must be reflected in the BP template files – you do need a modicum of knowledge to be able to do this though but it’s not really technical knowledge just how to identify the main element differences and copy them to your BP template.
Thankfully though these requests will be a thing of the past as soon as BP 1.7 drops and BP starts working with any theme people choose to use.
If you’re still stuck no doubt mercime will revise your files for you in due course so have another shot at it and update this thread with the results.
