In reply to: Buddypress 1.5 using too much resource??
echiomega
ParticipantYes i did tried it before without cache and it’s even slower without cache and minify on. Is it just because i’m using too much plugin or is it because of buddypress?
In my old theme where i’m not running buddypress everything loads fine without high load on server.September 26, 2011 at 6:50 pm #121155In reply to: My “Settings” page disappeared?

ParticipantI’m still not seeing the Users Settings page …
I am using my own theme so do I have to run template pack again? I’m afraid of losing my configuration … Does template pack only create new pages, not recreate everything?

Memberok, thanks @modemlooper. For others:
I copied this:
if ( !function_exists( ‘bp_dtheme_widgets_init’ ) ) :
…
through to the endif; into my child theme’s functions.php, and it seems to work.September 26, 2011 at 4:56 pm #121139modemlooper
ModeratorYou can’t use two themes for same site.

ModeratorNot a BuddyPress issue. You add widget areas to a theme just like you would to a plain WordPress theme.

MemberOk I gave it another chance as I didn’t have anything to lose really, and this time it’s turned out ok. I think what might’ve been doing it was that with my previous installation, there was an option to enable buddypress theming, forums and groups on all blogs, which I ticked and this time I didn’t.
Thanks for your help

KeymasterThe activity/post issue is known and has been fixed for BuddyPress 1.5.1 (not out yet). In the meantime, either do this https://buddypress.trac.wordpress.org/changeset/5187/ or include the default theme’s javascript into your theme.

KeymasterWhat did Brajesh say to fix the first problem?
For the 2nd, look at the two points under the Theme Information heading on https://codex.buddypress.org/releases/1-5-developer-and-designer-information/

ModeratorIt’s really a case of doing a test site with your data and seeing if possible. In theory if your theme supports floats and so on it will fall ok. The issues usually are scaling down not up.
The ‘issues’ come with as you say embedding and images set to before be the full width of the content area. 100% can overcome this in some respects but you shouldn’t go ‘above’ what you have already for obvious reasons (a 700px wide image is it’s correct largest size).
If you are going for responsive then you should be going with max-width:100% on all images with or without floats. Video more or less will be a set size that’s just something without scripting you will have to live with or you can look at html5 video and scripting solutions / plugins. For smaller thumbnail images you can even do small fixed sizes or % again.
A few links around responsive images:
https://github.com/filamentgroup/Responsive-Images
http://adaptive-images.com/Some more general ones for responsive design:
http://coding.smashingmagazine.com/2011/01/12/guidelines-for-responsive-web-design/
http://stuffandnonsense.co.uk/projects/320andup/
http://www.smashingmagazine.com/2011/07/22/responsive-web-design-techniques-tools-and-design-strategies/The key though in moving into a ‘responsive’ or more fluid layout is thinking not in terms of pixel precision but a more flexible outlook to the theme.
Personally my approach to the older content would probably be get it looking acceptable but don’t worry about going up in width just worry about if goes lower maybe setting up some media queries to catch things.

Memberhi again Paul. I’m using CosmicBuddy theme and I was able make the blog link work now as suggested by the creator of the theme.
So now I’m missing the member settings area. My wordpress is a single site and the subdir is bp/. The page is blank when i try to go to /bp/members/admin/settings and /bp/members/admin/forums. Thanks again for your help.

Paul Wong-Gibbs
Keymaster$content_width is a standard WordPress theme variable and mainly controls the width of embeds and other media such as images. You’ll see it set something similar in any well-written WordPress theme.

KeymasterWhat theme are you using? Are you using multisite? What’s the name of the subdir that you’ve installed WordPress into?

KeymasterThere are two ways to resize the width:
1) Set the “maximum embed size” in the WP Media Settings Subpanel
2) Set the $content_width variable in your theme’s functions.php
`if ( ! isset( $content_width ) ) {
// Change 640 to whatever the width of your column is
$content_width = 640;
}`September 25, 2011 at 11:45 pm #121097In reply to: Laggy after update 1.5

ParticipantPaul, so right off I see errors with the call to a non-existent header image (I replaced it with a invisible gif and it is now solved) and adminbar.css.
With adminbar.css:
I’m using a child theme and I have its style sheet setup to import this way:
/* Inherit the default theme styles */
@import url( ../../plugins/buddypress/bp-themes/bp-default/_inc/css/default.css );/* Inherit the default theme adminbar styles */
@import url( ../../plugins/buddypress/bp-themes/bp-default/_inc/css/adminbar.css );That’s where the error is coming from. Reading over some of the changes to BP 1.5 i noted something called enqueued css. I’m not familiar with it really. If I just delete those two lines will that style sheet still inherit the parents style sheet? Deleting those lines does resolve that final error.

Member@r-a-y, I followed the instructions in [https://codex.buddypress.org/releases/1-5-developer-and-designer-information/#theme] and solved the problem. Tks.
The following are the procedures:
—
Member settings pages are blankBuddyPress 1.5 comes with brand-new templates so you can style your member settings pages. However, if you’re using an older child theme, you will need to copy over these templates to your WP theme. To fix this problem, copy over the folder [/plugins/buddypress/bp-themes/bp-default/members/single/settings/] directly to your WP theme’s folder.

Participant@Flora1234 Couldn’t you re-install your wordpress through http://yousite.com/wp-admin/update-core.php ??
If that’s what you want then you can just click on the re-install link. Also you won’t loss your plugin, but i do suggest you backup your database just in case.September 25, 2011 at 5:56 pm #121066r-a-y
KeymasterIn BP 1.5, you need these pages.
However, you can easily exclude pages from the main nav with a plugin like:
https://wordpress.org/extend/plugins/exclude-pages/—
To customize the BuddyBar, unfortunately you’ll need to get your hands dirty with code:
https://codex.buddypress.org/theme-development/modifying-the-buddypress-admin-bar/The code for widgets can be found in:
/plugins/buddypress/bp-core/bp-core-widgets.phpYou’ll need to extrapolate some of that code when building your custom entries in the BuddyBar.
Hope this is a good enough starting point!

KeymasterFollowing up on @frenx4u, is your theme a child theme of bp-default, or did you adapt it for BP use with the BuddyPress Template Pack? If the latter, you will probably have to do what frenx4u suggests.
