We have a WPMU install with Buddypress and a range of custom plug-ins.
WordPress – MU 2.9.2.
BuddyPress – Version 1.1.3
Production environment:
PHP – PHP Version 5.2.6-3ubuntu4.5
Apache – Apache/2.2.11
MySQL – mysql Ver 14.12 Distrib 5.0.75
Dev environment:
UBUNTU 2.6.31-14-server #48-Ubuntu
MySQL mysql Ver 14.14 Distrib 5.1.37
PHP Version 5.2.10
Apache/2.2.12 (Ubuntu)
We have a legacy user table which we have developed a data migration script to port user information from this legacy table into the WordPress and Buddypress tables. The script populates – wp_users, wp_usermeta and wp_bb_xprofile_data.
The problem we are experiencing seems specific to the environment of our live production system – UBUNTU – LAMP install as it is not reproducible on staging / dev environments – theses are different versions of UBUNTU and MYSQL.
The issue appears when the number of users in the database exceeds 3000+ :
1 – the performance of the dashboard area = specific to posts and pages areas is terrible.
2 – More worrying the ability to edit post content i.e. the visual editor tool bar disappears leaving us without the ability to update posts.
3 – The buddypress top menu disappears or takes an age to load
I have tried investigating whether this is specific to a plug-in on the site with limited success – disabling plug-ins does help but the performance issue still remains. I have also spent time turning on or off specific plug-ins or a small number – the performance issue still remains; the editing facility appears randomly. I am not convinced it’s a plug-in issue this issue doesn’t reproduce on our dev environment for example.
The wp_usermeta table has 16,000 rows
The wp_bb_xprofile_data table has around 18,000 rows
I am not sure this is relevant however.
Any help or advice would be appreciated for where to investigate or if someone has experienced this problem and was able to resolve it.
Isn’t BuddyPress just using bbPress as a core foundation for its group forums? So rather than supporting bbPress, isn’t BuddyPress using bbPress?
Also, I disagree that bbPress is just a concept, seeing that development has restarted again.
I have used bbPress in the past as a wordpress forum since its easy to change and easy to template when you know how to make templates for wordpress. Other than simplepress forums and phpBB which are a pain to change cause of the new learning curve and phpBB is almost not integratable with wordpress.
I’m working on a solution to intergrate bbPress with BuddyPress, dropping the group forums (I hate those).
Hello all,
I’m having problems trying to get the buddypress to work properly on my “Less Is Less 1.4 by Miguel Santirso” theme. Whenever I click on the menu it brings me to a blank error page. (Menu as in the buddypress buttons.)
I’ve installed the buddypress plug-in along with the buddypress template pack to correct the maligning that occurs.
It then prompts me to: “You should update your .htaccess now.” along with, “By default WordPress uses web URLs which have question marks and lots of numbers in them, however WordPress offers you the ability to create a custom URL structure for your permalinks and archives. This can improve the aesthetics, usability, and forward-compatibility of your links. A number of tags are available, and here are some examples to get you started.”
At the bottom it also states: “If your .htaccess file were writable, we could do this automatically, but it isn’t so these are the mod_rewrite rules you should have in your .htaccess file. Click in the field and press CTRL + a to select all.”
Then I’m suppose to paste:
RewriteEngine On
RewriteBase /organic/
RewriteCond %{REQUEST_FILENAME} !-f
RewriteCond %{REQUEST_FILENAME} !-d
RewriteRule . /organic/index.php [L]
So I created the .htaccess file, pasted the script above in there and uploaded it to my sever.
Once uploaded, my entire site doesn’t work and goes to a white error page.
My question is, what exactly is it that I change in the permalink settings when it asks me to do so?
Thanks in advance.
@gregfeilding time to dig in the access logs. see if you can find the dates on the extra files, or on the changed files & cross-check them with the access logs at the same time.
I do know of someone who got hacked via *Windows* which them infected his installs via his ftp program. most of the hacks fo this type that I have seen haven;t been via any wordPress files, but the box itself or hacking the ftp password. Use sftp instead.
Did you get to step 3 of the plugin?
It gives explicit instructions on how to modify the template to match your WordPress theme.
—
If BuddyPress pages are not aligned correctly then you will need to modify some of the templates to match your theme’s HTML structure.
Then open up the page.php file (if this does not exist use index.php). Make note of the HTML template structure of the file, specifically the [div] tags that surround the content and sidebar.
You will need to change the HTML structure in the BuddyPress templates that you copied into your theme to match the structure in your page.php or index.php file. The files that you need to edit are as follows (leave out any folders you have not copied over in step two):
* /activity/index.php
* /blogs/index.php
* /forums/index.php
* /groups/index.php
* /groups/create.php
* /groups/single/home.php
* /groups/single/plugins.php
* /members/index.php
* /members/single/home.php
* /members/single/plugins.php
* /registration/register.php
Once you are done matching up the HTML structure of your theme in these template files, please take another look through your site. You should find that BuddyPress pages now fit inside the content structure of your theme.

If you can’t get this to work, just use a pre-made BuddyPress theme.
That link only gives you the latest bleeding build of BuddyPress.
It has absolutely nothing to do with building a theme.
—
I hate to repeat myself, but…
If you want to customize or make changes to the default BP theme, read the following article to create a child theme:
https://codex.buddypress.org/how-to-guides/building-a-buddypress-child-theme/
If you’re using an existing WordPress theme, then only use the BuddyPress Template Pack plugin with your WordPress theme:
https://wordpress.org/extend/plugins/bp-template-pack/
It helps if you know the basics of developing webpages and/or creating a WordPress theme. If you have no idea how to do either, you might find theme customization challenging.
Seems like this should work:
-Create a Child Theme: https://codex.buddypress.org/how-to-guides/building-a-buddypress-child-theme/
-Copy the file in the default BP theme folder/registration/register.php and save it in your new child theme folder as a page template (or you could just overwrite the index.php)
-Create a New Page that uses that page template
-Go to Settings–>Reading and set the new page you created as a “Static Page”
I saw a plugin to do a sidebar registration for WordPress a while back, but I’m not sure if it works for BP or not.
When I set the upload path to wp-content/blogs.dir/1/files I can get avatars working but it breaks my old media lib at wp-content/uploads. Is there a fix for this issue? Can I move the old uploads dir into to wp-content/blogs.dir/1/files and with the upload path to wp-content/blogs.dir/1/files get the media to link? Thanks.
Actually just saw this: seems pretty easy to implement WP3.0 menus into current WP… well, at least part of WP3.0 menu functionality perhaps. Am testing it now. Will update…
wp_nav_menu() article:
http://wpspecial.net/2010/04/menu-support-for-wordpress-3-0-themes/
Not necessarily, wp_nav_menu() is the function to load any WordPress menu (as introduced in 3.0). I’m not sure how to do this, I haven’t looked into it.
Check out any type of jQuery lightbox script for WP:
https://wordpress.org/extend/plugins/tags/lightbox
Cool, thanks — I’ve posted a somewhat more coherent version of the question here: https://wordpress.org/support/topic/397369

Hello,
I am getting an error while creating a group. Within each step for creating the group, the error “Page not found” will appear and then the page will load successfully. I was able to create the group, but every time I went to the next step, I saw the page not found error in between.
Can you please help.
I am running the latest version of buddypress (on wordpress). This is on a windows server on GoDaddy.
Hi All!
I am really getting excited about having my bbpress look more and more like my old Ning page.
I was wondering if anybody had a possible code fix to get an .swf file to embed on a buddypress forum.
I can get the embed code into my posts and pages on wordpress, but was wondering if this would be
possible on the forums. For example:

Thanks to R – A – Y for his generous help so far!!!!!
You should ask this question in the Alpha/Beta forum https://wordpress.org/support/forum/12
@Andrea_r has posted relevant info about setting up a Network in WP 3.0
https://codex.wordpress.org/Create_A_Network
Note : Subdomains work by using wildcard subdomains. You must have this enabled in Apache, and you must also add a wildcard subdomain to your DNS records. Some hosts will not support this, so you may need to ask your webhost before enabling this feature.
Which means you do not and should not add the subdomain physically to your server. The subdomains generated by WPMU and WP 3.0 are virtual subdomains.
I am running wordpress 2.9.2, and buddypress 1.2.3
I am using my own theme and the buddypress template pack
The only files I have changed are these
* /activity/index.php
* /blogs/index.php
* /forums/index.php
* /groups/index.php
* /groups/create.php
* /groups/single/home.php
* /groups/single/plugins.php
* /members/index.php
* /members/single/home.php
* /members/single/plugins.php
* /registration/register.php
This is my URL http://mightyangler.com
I’m mainly wondering where to start. I read about creating a child theme and get the file structure part. I understand that wordpress and buddypress themes are different than normal css in that they have php in them. What I am wondering is should I start by studying wordpress theme creation then create the child theme or is there another way to go? I am new to php, css and theme creation but have gathered some materials on the language and am studying the languages themselves. Just not sure where to start when it comes to creation. Also is it better to use a software like dreamweaver or a notepad software to write the code in.
I have installed ubuntu (new to linux also) lampp and have wordpress and buddypress up and running. Besides a couple dual boot issues and database issues when installing wordpress it wasn’t to hard. Now that I have my testing environment set up I want to get into theme development. Once pointed in the right direction of study I’m sure I can read up and start learning. Just not sure which spot to start at.
Thanks
I don’t know off the top of my head of a good plugin that does this, but I did find some helpful (if wordy) tutorials on writing some jQuery that will make it work: http://theadhamian.wordpress.com/2009/12/01/jquery-validation-part-2-using-jquery-validation-plugin/
I used “Buddypress Template Pack” to add support for my existing WordPress theme. Buddypress v. 1.2.3
It’s not buddypress, it’s not WPMU, it’s 3.0 beta 2 — installed with subdomains.
I don’t have wildcard (at least I think that’s not possible, will ask my hosting prover tomorrow), so what I’m doing is simply directing the subdomains for the blogs I’m setting up to the wordpress root directory. That seems to work… sometimes.
The thing is I’ve set up like 2 or 3 subdomains so far, and only 1 of them work (the others return an error message like “No website configured” (seems to be created by hosting provider). It appears that for some reason it simply can’t grok .htaccess / index.php / whatever.
I’ve used this approach with another hosting provider and it worked entirely no problem (and the sites went live in like 2 minutes). I’ve read that some domain / subdomain configurations can take hours or even days.
So maybe I’m just begging for emotional support while I wait?!?!
I have no idea, but would appreciate any hints / tips anyone might be able to give!
ps: I have “Options +FollowSymlinks” at the top of my htaccess file (in case that matters), and otherwise, it’s just the plain + simple one generated by WP 3.0 after turning on multisite

Thanks Ray! I was successful at installing BBpress forums by making sure that file was cut and pasted to my root directory.
Admin panel on wordpress says that bbpress forums has been successfull integrated into buddypress.
Sadly I can’t get it to show up on my groups tab nor my header on my page.
I was able to get the forums by typing in the following address:
http://privateenglishportal.com/forums
When I try to post new topic, everything just disappears as if I had posted nothing.
Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated!
Thanks,
Steve
