I’m testing the plugin and it’s got some severe limitations. It cannot handle recurring events and I can’t get it working globally. I am also testing Events Manager 2.0rc2. It seems much more capable of complex functions and display.

This is a good and clear guide for you:

To get rid of Pages, I followed the directions on the link specified above:

Using the following piece of code, the Pages will display without heading and in Page Order:

      <?php wp_list_pages(‘sort_column=menu_order&title_li=’); ?>

It can be kind of hard to find, it’s about half way down the page on this link: https://codex.wordpress.org/wp_list_pages

I have installed WordPress MU 2.8.6 and BuddyPress 1.1.2. I followed the directions according to BuddyPress and everything went well. I have no other plugins.

The only problem is….even when loggedin as site administrator, I don’t see “new topic” or “new post” button anywhere. I could be missing something….(perhaps I didn’t enable something, or am simply overlooking it)?

I see the buttons for “newest topics”, “most replied topics”, “unreplied topics”, and “my topics”…but no buttons for creating new ones.

Any helps or ideas are greatly appreciated! I’ve taken a screenshot for you in case that helps to communicate what I’m seeing:
http://i45.tinypic.com/2dh5j7m.jpg. (The image shows with a different theme than the default, but this also occurred with the default theme.)

    I now understand the problem.

In order to get the new version to work I basically have to re-create my bp theme with the new theme files. I compared the standard new buddypress theme to mine after the upgrade and noticed that I don’t have a status directory for example I copied the contents of your bp-sn-parent into my bp theme and the new features all worked, except my css was now broken.

This is insane. I had paid someone a good deal amount of funds so that my bp theme matches my wordpress theme. Now I have to do it all over again if I want to move on from 1.0.3

Here are the contents of my buddypress theme root within bp-themes:

Here are the contents of my wordpress theme root:

    http://avarayr.com/wp-content/themes/avarayr/images/wpthemeroot.jpg

    Please advise.

If I leave everything as is (without moving the contents from my bp theme to wp theme) and just upgrade automatically I had up with the messed up activity stream and other problems.

Try the custom filters for BP plugin – https://wordpress.org/extend/plugins/custom-profile-filters-for-buddypress/

Allows you / your users to be more prescriptive about what BP ‘auto-links’. Don’t think it will completely stop BP auto-linking some things – though you could, if you wished, tell the plugin to exclude ALL fields from being auto-linked.

You / users can also use the square brackets ‘[ ]’ in profile fields to specify words or phrases they do want linking.

The plugin’s pretty handy for specifying fields like web site / twitter that shouldn’t be auto-linked.

This is a topic being discussed in various places here under various specific auspices, but I wanted to start a new topic to discuss my specific issue. Please forgive any redundancy.

I initially selected WPMU for the platform on my current long-term project for two main reasons: 1) My existing familiarity with WP Theme Development is far greater than with any other CMS, and 2) WPMU supports this thing called BuddyPress. I need a social networking component for this project. However, upon looking into things further and thinking about them more and more, the exact functionality I need to make BuddyPress sustainable does not seem to exist, though I feel like some development in this direction is critical to BuddyPress’s long-term relevance.

It is just not sustainable for us to expect folks to accumulate account after account after account … ad infinitum. What I am wanting is a plugin for WPMU that will allow a new user to register via an existing Facebook/Twitter/OpenID (basically an API for Google, Yahoo!, Blogger, WordPress, and more)/etc. account, allow for certain communications between my blog and the given social network (ie – adding blog comments to a user’s news feed and that sort of thing), AND create a user in my WPMU database, filling in certain profile data brought over from the given social network, such as username, e-mail address, first and last name, age, gender, etc.

This last piece is what seems to be missing in most of the plugins/applications that currently exist. I am not a full-on developer, though I can hold my own while digging through and manipulating php code. It seems to me that this type of application could be built, given the access we now have to this sort of profile data thanks to the OpenID PHP libraries, the Facebook API, Twitter API, etc.

    I guess my questions are:

    1) Am I completely off base that this sort of thing can be done?

    2) Is there a product out there currently doing this (or in development) that I am unaware of?

    3) Could we start a project or development group for this?

Again, I am not a full-on developer, but this seems doable, and furthermore, it seems critical to the long-term relevance of a package like BuddyPress. Please accept my apologies if this is redundant, but it seems like a conversation that needs to had again and again until the ball gets really rolling.

Watch your escape quotes. Each time you write a double quote, it ends the previous quoted segment. If you start a quoted string with double quotes, use single quotes to indicate quotation marks inside. It works as vice versa as well.

If you already knew that and simply wrote it all with double quotes for your demonstration, I would advise that you double check your path to your image.

A word of advice about paths: it is usually a good idea not to hard-code the whole path. It will work on your site if you get it right, but if you ever move things it will break. Instead, use defined constants to represent these path components. WP_PLUGIN_URL points to your plugins directory, and get_option(‘siteurl’) will assume the value of your root domain, with http://. Here is a link that has some more of these useful constants.

    Hope this helps.

That is a great method @dpolant! I however wanted to insert this snippet here before

    <blockquote>

but it’s not accepting it. Mainly the url value is not accepted I think, how is that done correctly?

    $activity_content .= "<img height="20" width="20" class="bla" alt="bla" src="http://wordpress.mu/(...)/bla.png"/><blockquote>"

    Thanks!

Hmmm – I installed the Plugin from Dennis Morhard “Invitation Code Checker” (https://wordpress.org/extend/plugins/invitation-code-checker) and changed the text a bit, so that my users know, which the code is when they register. Since then (a couple days now) ZERO spam signups… I hope it stays like that and the plugin is not too upset, that I misuse it :-)

How do you make the custom child themes, from http://themeshaper.com/thematic/ work? WordPress MU can’t seem to see them, when I upload them.

(I’m going to try to be helpful rather than just telling you to go elsewhere. I want Buddypress to grow, and users helping users ought be part of that. I’d also like the forum here to be a useful resource. So many threads at mu.wordpress.org are just cries for help with zero replies. That sucks.)

wordpressfan, I’d probably approach this using Roles. I’ve never done it, but you could set the Dashboard user default role in Site Options to ‘Inactive’. That would allow you to monitor signups, and approve as necessary, I’d imagine. As long as users know that there is a process in place where they have to wait for approval. There are plugins out there that allow you to create custom roles, too, but I’ve never used them.

In terms of the registration emails sent to you as admin, this is also a WMPU thing, not on the Buddypress end. I’m sure I’ve seen plugins that allow you to edit these, but I can’t find them for the life of me. If you’re comfortable with hacking the WPMU core (and rehacking after updates), you can find the place these emails are generated in

    function newblog_notify_siteadmin

    in wmpu-functions.php in /wpmu-includes

off the root of your WMPU install.

I seem to recall using this with success on an old pre-1.1 install to make that happen : https://wordpress.org/extend/plugins/cosmic-bp-user-signup-password/

Not upgrading wordpress to its latest version is a security risk. You’ve been warned.

I think you can upgrade, but beware that this is frowned upon as the offical documentation states that you need WPMU 2.8+ or higher.

The other thing to keep in mind is that your BP widgets will not work due to the new widget system in WP 2.8+.

What are the plugins that are keeping you from upgrading?

    Hello,

I wanted to integrate latest version of BuddyPress i.e.1.1.2 with WordPress MU 2.7.1. I cannot upgrade WordPress to later version because of compatibility issues with some plugins. Is it possible if I can use BuddyPress 1.1.2 with that?

    Thanks

Well, look at it this way. WordPress doesn’t have a feature like that, so why should BP? There are themes out there that let you do that and that’s fine. That’s the way it should be with BP as well. In time there’ll be a lot more themes and maybe some of them will implement uploading a logo image, but it should not be in core.

I upgraded a build I’m working on to MU 2.8.6 today and noticed that Facebook Connect stopped working. (I have the BP-FBConnect plugin installed.) I thought the two were connected but then heard that a friend who also works with Facebook Connect, but not using WordPress or this plugin, was also having problems. The word through the grapevine is that it might be because Facebook changed their API. They made a tiny mention about it about 2 months ago when they discussed API sharing, but I heard the old API got turned off today. Any insight into this? If it’s an API issue, will the plugin be updated soon? Thanks so much! Y’all rock :)

Yesterday I added Buddymatic to the WordPress.org theme repository.

On a standard WordPress or WordPress MU blog the framework is 100% compatible with Thematic. On a BuddyPress home blog, the framework provides full BuddyPress functionality. On a BuddyPress member blog, the BuddyPress admin bar retains the look and feel of the BuddyPress home blog admin bar.

This is a framework and you can create BuddyPress child themes for it. Thematic child themes are compatible with this framework. A Thematic child theme may require additional styling for the BuddyPress components.

The zip archive contains two child themes: Coffee with Friends by Daisy Olsen and a sample child theme that contains the CSS framwork for building your own child theme.

    Requires BP 1.1 or higher.

I have read all that but none of those scenarios seem to match mine.

This sounds about right: “I’ve built a completely custom WordPress theme and BuddyPress theme”

But like I said, when I move /wp-content/bp-themes/themename to /wp-content/themes/themename per the instructions here: https://codex.buddypress.org/how-to-guides/upgrading-a-buddypress-1-0-theme-for-buddypress-1-1/ that doesn’t do it either.

Is it because my bp theme doesn’t have a parent/child relationship?

The entire BP theme is /wp-content/bp-themes/themename

Along with a few bug fixes, there are also a few important security patches.

Hi, sorry, I know you guys are busy… gentle nudge on the above? I still have IE users who are getting put into a WordPress error corner when they try to create a group. I just upgraded everything, so now I’m running the latest BP (with subversion revisions) and WPMU 2.8.5.2. Thanks!
