Ok. So do you know if the table is kept stored somewhere else besides the MySQL table. e.g. is it kept in WordPress Object Cache?

    Thanks!

    That is bad new Grossbouff.. I feel bad for you, that you’ve put so much work in something only to find out, the WP team has been working on a solution already.. BUT;

It seems you’ve almost finished your plugin, and I think it would be a mistake to not release it.. There are many BP powered sites out there, which are running custom code and have a big userbase.. this means they will be hesitant to upgrade BuddyPress or WordPress as fast as the hobbyists do (no offense =D).. So they might really like a custom made plugin, which stays away from their core setup… I think there would be quite a few people really happy with your plugin as is, and you can continue developing a new plugin on the side…

    Anyways good luck!

I’m having a little trouble understanding the Buddypress admin bar. When i upload a custom wordpress theme, and activate it, the admin bar integrates perfectly with the wordpress theme.

http://www.capitalistdog.net is a good example of what I’m talking about.

However, once I follow the steps on the following codex page, the formatting of the admin bar gets messed up. http://codex.buddypress.org/how-to-guides/upgrading-a-buddypress-1-0-theme-for-buddypress-1-1/

This is happening on a local machine, so I can’t show you, but here’s a screenshot of the error. I’ve highlighted the admin menu with a white box http://img7.imageshack.us/img7/8669/44663371.jpg

I have copied over the CSS from the bp parent theme for the Admin Bar, and pasted it into my custom themes css, but the problem persists. This problem is persistent on all custom themes that I test, it always works at first, until i follow the steps in the codex.

Any idea where i’m going wrong? Thanks for any help

Hi Andrea_r, waiting for videos to your session/s at http://wordpress.tv/event/wordcamp-new-york/ :-)

I tested your theme in a site under development.

WPMU 2.8.5.2 + BP 1.1.2 + bbpress installed via BP one click

Main site with MU Sitewide Tags Pages

BuddyPress main site in blog-ID-2 at http://members.example.org/

Thank you for the clean theme. Without looking at code, i.e., checking it out like a newbie who activated the theme, following are some quick notes:

    1. wp-admin-bar – Text (e.g. Org Members) of link to BuddyPress site ( http://members.example.com) shows up in backend (dashboard etc) but does not show up in front end. The link block is there and clickable to main BP site, but the text does not show up. Still, the wp-admin-bar shows correct links to main BP site, etc. throughout the site including sub-blogs.

    2. Footer widgets only showing up in only in blog areas – is this the intention?

    3. h1 – cannot find it anywhere in the theme. Need at least one h1 per Post or Page

    4. Main Nav – link to Forums was not generated to show BP main site nor other subblogs nor main site, while link to a newly activated “Events” plugin page was generated to show in the main nav across all sites. (the link to Forum shows up in this install when I use child theme)

    5. Main Nav – like the official bp-child theme, activating the theme in sub-blog for groups or individual members does not show correct links to main BP site features like member/group/blog directory. In order for one theme to be used throughout the site, conditional statement will be needed to show correct links to main BP site conjoined with respective blog’s navigation links.

Quick scan in main BP site (blog_id_2) to see how theme works in different sections

    6. Members Section

    – directory page – 2 columns – ok

    – My own admin individual profile page – skeleton set up with 2 columns where in left column is avatar, options bar and user bar boxes. But there is a large space on the right side as if missing a 3rd column. Checked links in options bar resulted in two columns with links except the ff which has a missing left column – Edit Profile page, Change Avatar page

    – If I click on another member’s individual profile page – left column as two user bar boxes unlike the link to my profile which has the options bar and user bar. In addition, when I also am missing the left column with options/users boxes in Blogs link page, Friends link page, Groups link pages plus the Events link page is incorrect and goes to front page of site

    7. Groups Section

    – directory page – 2 columns – ok

    – Group individual page – skeleton set up with 2 columns – but there is a large space on the right side as if missing a 3rd column plus the page is missing all sub-navigations for Creating a Group, Creating forums etc

That’s it for now. As mentioned above, didn’t look at codes “behind the scenes” at this point, only the functionality if newbie user activated it.

    Good luck :-)

    Hi…Big news here.

But (in parts) bad news :

I was cleaning the code of my plugin, which is at this point almost finished.

I was trying to find a reliable way to handle categories and tags : my code is working but categories and tags are in 2 different custom tables (the code is a little dirty); there is no admin page to manage them…

Well, I was looking at how WordPress was handling them because I wanted the code to be strong enough to keep maintaining my component in future easily.

Then I start to look at the taxonomy system.

Then I saw that WP 2.9 will include custom post types…

And then… I’m half disappointed, half excited :

Half excited, because “custom post types” means that you will be able to define new post types (-actually, there is just “pages” and “posts”), like, let’s say … “classifieds”.

That means that you will be able to use the WP dashboard to write a classified like you write a post, and use categories and tags for those classifieds as you do for a post. Those categories or tags will not be those you use for your posts but custom ones just for your “classifieds” post type.

The wire for a classified is no more necessary as you can will be able to use the core comments system with your classified.

Idem for pictures that you will be able to upload and attach directly from there.

That also means that you will be able to search, filter and display those classifieds with the same functions that you do for your posts.

Well, well, that means that this is a big step for WordPress…

But this is also a disappointment for me because that means that lot of the time (several months so far – not full time of course, and i’m an autodidact) I spent to write my plugin was useless as now, the WP core will be able to do by itself a lot of what I wrote in my plugin.

So I think that it would be a wide decision to wait that the custom post type stuff came and to… almost start writing a new plugin from scratches.

Yes, some pieces of my work will still be reusable to make all this “buddypress-friendly” (attach classifieds to groups, notifications, etc), but 95% of my actual code will potentially be useless as WP core function will do the same, and better.

But from what I read, we don’t know exactly when all that stuff will came. Some parts of the functions will be available in WP 2.9 but it’s not sure that the whole thing will be usable in that version, neither we know when WPMU 2.9 will be out : in the trac, they say

I really see no reason we cannot get this into 2.9 since a large majority of the work has been completed already. Even if we only get some of the basic functionality of this into 2.9 it would still be a big help and a basis of something to build off of for 3.0.

    .

Well… think the best thing to do should be :

    STEP 1 :

    Sleep. Cry. Sleep. Howl. :)

    STEP 2

-restart from scratches if I feel the courage for it :)

-write a new plugin that creates a new blog just for Classifieds at the plugin’s activation.

-All the members of the BuddyPress installation would be members of that blog and so have the capability to write posts.

-Use the posts on that blog as the “classifieds” displayed in the BuddyPress site.

-Control the data sent – number of images used in the post, number of chars, post boxes displayed, etc).

-Add the BP features for notifications, activity, “attaching” classifieds to groups and so.

-use that blog as the basis of my plugin; then

    STEP 3

This will be able to make the component ready for WP 2.9 or WP 3.0…

There shouldn’t be lots of stuff to modify in the code. change the post types of the posts in the custom blog to “classifieds”, move them to the main blog and add specific capabilities to decide who can do what. Example : you could be able, as subscriber, to write classifieds but not posts or pages.

And why not differenciate classifieds written on the main blog and classifieds written on a user’s blog, if any (ex. company blog).

    STEP 3b

    Add a BP-friendly posting system ?

    So here’s where I am.

As I said I’m feel a little sorry.

Maybe I should have though of handle the data from my component from a blog from the beginning. But that when we make mistakes that we go further !

The good thing is that I learned a lot about WordPress & BuddyPress and that I know now what I can do with it, and i’ll release my own BP project soon or later. And that once that custom post type system will be available, writing the classifieds component should be a piece of cake, or almost.

If I feel it, i’ll start to rewrite it soon as I explained it in step 2. But I have a lot of work now so I’m not sure I will be able to do this at this moment. I’ll tell you about it in a few days.

Anyway, RIP (for the moment) my-custom-component :) You can still see some pictures of the work achieved here : http://dev.benoitgreant.be/2009/11/18/classifieds-component-postponed/

Thanks Jeff, I did that already. Also changed wp-config.php to reflect the new path and domain.

It all comes down to the database, as far as I can see it. I don’t understand why wordpress needs to care about which domain it’s running on anyway but, that’s where we stand.

I need to know what database fields/tables are dependent on the path of bp.

    same problem here,

I installed it clean and like the readme.txt describes.

After installing wordpress mu, it all works fine.

When activating buddypress it goes blank, i tried to load the main site and it was blank.

After deleting the cookies i can view all the pages, but when i try to login it goes blank.

so i think it’s a problem with the cookie handling/creating.

if others could test this too we maybe could isolate the problem

    thanks

    hi,

we are trying to move our bp to a subfolder.

    http://www.interconnectit.com/719/migrating-a-wordpresswpmubuddypress-website/

this website is giving away great info but we are not moving to another domain, so we can’t use their tool to simply change the name of the domain. what we need to change is domain.com to domain.com/wpmu and in most of the tables of the database, domain is separately inserted from it’s trailing part /sub/sub/folder.

Therefore, i’m not sure running a sql find/replace with domain.com to domain.com/bp will do any good..

when i change the main blog’s url on wp_blogs on the database it looks like it’ll start working but then i get a blank page without any errors…

is there something you want to share that could make our lives easier?

Okay, just to make sure, you are running WordPress Mu and not single-version WP, correct?

Since above you indicate that this is a clean install, I would suggest starting over from scratch once more. This means deleting the MySQL DB ( I assume that there is no data worth saving since you said that this is the first time you had installed WPMU). Next, reinstall WPMU and fully test it before installing BuddyPress. Once you’ve determined WPMU is functioning properly, then install and activate BP. Choose the default BP theme. Do not install any other plugins until you have verified that BP is functioning properly.

To make sure that you install both WPMU and BP properly, read the readme.txt files that come with each application.

I’m running buddypress 1.1.2 on WordPress MU 2.8.4a

For some odd reason when I create a multiselectbox under Profile Field Setup, people on the users end are unable to select more then one item on the list. If they choose more then one, only one of the selects is highlight after you save.

This take’s place on two different sites which are on two different hosts using different templates.

    Anyone come across this?

One of my favorite modular lightboxes: PrettyPhoto

    http://www.no-margin-for-errors.com/projects/prettyPhoto-jquery-lightbox-clone/

I redesigned a lot of the core BP components so it’d be hard for me to give a step-by-step. I’ve setup several different header / footer files using BP’s Conditional Tags.

The bets tip that I can give you is to just color outside the line. I started out by designing a wordpress template and after installing BP, I brought each directory from the default BP parent theme structure one by one and went from there. I went over every single style in the CSS file and modified each one to match the look of my theme.

The register.php page is a BuddyPress-specific theme file that let’s you more easily customize the user registration page. It is found in the /registration/ directory of the parent theme bp-sn-parent. When it is in use, it takes over the duties from the wp-signup.php page which is a WPMU file. You can use either one, but I find it easier to use the register.php page.

Also, read this thread. The OP created a new Captcha plugin for WordPress that is compatible with version 1.1.x of BP:

First off I would like to thank the BuddyPress team for developing an amazing tool for creating a social media network. For the past 4 months I’ve been developing a companion site for a magazine that we’re launching here in Hoboken, NJ. Using BuddyPress, WordPress MU, and a ton of various jqueries, I designed a site allowing our future readers to join in our community, add events, classifieds, images, and post comments on our articles. The site is set to launch in a few days:

Since you have taken a WP install and turned it into a WPMU install, there would be no BP data to import from your original install. Thus, you will have no BP data when install and activate BP–other than your Admin account.

Did you search the WPMU forums for instructions?

    https://mu.wordpress.org/search/upgrading+WP+to+WPMU?forums=1

If so, as DJPaul says, each member will have to log in before their initial BP data set is created.

I haven’t had time to update the plugin (nor my community), but running BuddyPress 1.0.3 and WordPress MU 2.8.1, it shows up below the profile field settings in the BuddyPress secion of the menu.

Perhaps something has changed which breaks the plugin, causing it to not show up at all. If so, perhaps an URL like this will help: http://yourwebsite.tld/wp-admin/admin.php?page=buddypress_stats_wrap
