In reply to: New BuddyPress 1.2 default theme

ParticipantI agree that it’s a big step forward from a usability point of view. The two column side navigation confuses everyone at first (and second) glance. And constancy is critical in user interface design. Floating the admin bar is a great usability idea too. And the “New Post” and “New Group” buttons on those directory pages is absolutely brilliant. That’s a huge leap in usability. People are always very confused with the current Forums directory page. So that’s all great! Very good work.
What I’m really missing though is all the beautiful little details from the previous design. Those ‘speech bubble’ arrows on the title backgrounds (although they were somewhat overused). The nice gradients on the title backgrounds. The beautiful (and useful) little icons in the navigation. The beautiful rounded buttons with their little arrows, icons, checkmarks and busy cursors. And just the overall brand feel of the yellow orange and grey. It really was (and still is) a beautiful design. But generic makes more sense for a default theme. Like the Kubrik theme for WordPress. And easier theme development is always good. I also recognize the the new theme is a work in progress.

ParticipantTwo options… look into the Kaltura plugin:
https://wordpress.org/extend/plugins/buddypress-kaltura-media-component/
Or just search for a regular (non-BuddyPress) WordPress plugin and host the video contest on the main blog (as opposed to living within the social context of BuddyPress).

ParticipantIf you really need a nice shop plugin, which is easy to use and don’t mind paying for it, go for the shopp wordpress plugin. Used it before and it works great. Heard they started supporting wpmu now as well.

Participanta vsp host that takes 9 hours to install any WordPress component is purely incompetent… move your site somewhere else, please…
even some cheap hosting like hostgator are taking max 10 minutes to install the whole thing… they even get free support to help you out.
when you take 9 hours to install a script that is released by millions, you seriously have a lack of knowledge in the web industry.

Not sure how well it works with buddypress, but I suppose it shouldn’t make any difference. I’m planning on using that plugin myself as well.

Participant“That” page is actually a WordPress page and as such has not much to do with BP. Let Andy take care of the more important things…
With basic skill level however you should be able to do that yourself like so: http://www.problogdesign.com/wordpress/custom-wordpress-login-screen/
Are there any important hardcoded theme changes in this one Andy (apart from the obvious total css renewal?

ParticipantI guess I should have worded the above different. I also found the plugin you speak of, however–I guess what I was wondering is, will buddypress eventually incorporate their own plugin. The reason I state that is because, it seems logical to email all users in case there is a problem with logins or if someone hacked the system. BuddyPress seems like it should be the responsible party to potential problems. Not muWordpress or wordpress. And being that it is a social network website owners must keep the attention of users by sending information out occassionally. Just a thought…

ParticipantFor web apps there is no need for multiple versions for different devices such as iPhone/Android/WebOS, that’s the main benefit of doing a web app over a native one.
Love the screen shots so far, looking great! Did you see the WP-Touch plugin for wordpress, might be some useful stuff you could use there.

ParticipantTry re-logging with your FTP, not sure what FTP program you use, but mine (FileZilla) sometimes shows old files that I already removed with wordpress. Also check the chmod, not really sure if it can block you from removing files, but just to be sure, change it to 777.

ParticipantCan you explain a bit more on the process of making a child theme? I too would love to have the member blogs have an integrated look and feel into the default buddypress theme – NOT the ugly WordPressMU blue theme :p.
Thanks

ParticipantAndy,
What type of plugins/multiple db’s/caching do you have enable to handle all the users of this site?
Of course WordPress.com which runs MU has scaled quite well, but I know they do some special things on the backend to make that happen.
WordPress (which is what I’ve done up until now) scales VERY well. I’m amazed at how much traffic I can handle on WordPress for $6 a month.

ParticipantThere are more free buddypress themes at http://freebpthemes.com.
The list at https://buddypress.org/extend/themes/ should have more on it in the next couple weeks. Once updated that list will include https://wordpress.org/extend/themes/tags/buddypress.

KeymasterWordPress scales just fine. Is it perfectly and sveltely built for all applications? No.
http://ma.tt/2006/03/wordpress-and-lyceum/ is a good read about this from a few years back.

BuddyPress doesn’t really suffer any of these as advantages or disadvantages, since it currently sits on top of an MU installation; it just kinda “is.”

KeymasterFYI, here’s the demo of BP on standard WP:
Plugin isn’t released yet AFAIK.
At least this allows standard WP folks to test out BP before the merge, I can see this greatly helping development timelines for those looking at standard WP for social networking.

ParticipantHowever, any geek is quick to point out that “WordPress doesn’t scale”. I’ve always wondered if that was just an urban myth. There must be some truth to it?
John James Jacoby
KeymasterI suspect it was just a matter of finding the WPMU functions that don’t exist within WP, recreating them in a plugin and using existing WP functions in their place. This isn’t surprising considering that the platforms share about 99% of the same code, but with the code merge around the corner this plugin is a little bit late to the game for most folks.
A for effort though.
