    @sunday-a-james,

    moved your topic to the appropriate forum.

    If you exported your local site to prod server without taking some caution, it’s a normal issue.
    Or maybe have you forgot to set permalinks or create BP’s page ?

    Read here please:

    Bumping after 20mn is a bit abused, no ?

    If you use BP, you can edit, add or remove custom profile fields if you activate the extended profile component.

    To add an external plugin to the user profile edit, try to add it to the profile template.
    Or modify the plugin so he use BP specific templates.

    Add Meta Box to Admin Extended User Profile

    and much more to read on codex and forum.

    @henrywright,

    good idea really.
    I have same issue as @peter-hamilton
    Local single install, WP 4.1.1, 2012, php 5.5.12 with only BP 2.2, bbPress and bp-default-data

    Admin use gmail, and also all dummy users created with BDD plugin.

    – first time i activated BI, all users showed the mystery man. And plugin works, as i see the border.
    – changed profile photo of admin: custom picture appeared.
    – removed the picture: identicon appeared on the admin account.
    -tried to do same thing with a dummy user. Nothing happened.
    – create a new user from back office, with gmail address, identicon showed up
    – all other dummy users comes with mystery man.

    – manually created a identicons folder in /uploads/

    – modified all dummy user mail address. Mystery man still showing.
    – applied a custom picture to one, ok, then removed. Mystery man again.

    – tried global settings to “empty avatar”. Nada ! Reverted to default MM setting and still no identicon.

    By default, members that haven’t uploaded a profile photo are given a mystery-man avatar. This BuddyPress plugin automatically replaces default avatars.

    BI seems to work only for newly users, with a big exception for the site admin.
    gmail icon has no priority, even if it is not a “default” picture.

    But it is not uploaded, which may probably be the logical disturbing point of this issue ?

    On a dev site, using this plugin would really help to avoid calling an external avatar service.
    Would also be true for a prod site, where specially gravatars are mentionned to be optimized as they slow down page speed.

    Implementing some options to the existing WP avatar settings to allow/disallow gravatar, gmail, etc , or to let BI playing alone OR aside existing settings, would be a huge improvement.

    Hello @alice-kaye,

    you’re not alone with that issue, which can sit in the theme (the case of 2015) or in a SEO plugin.
    BP canonical names and some SEO conventions are not best friends at the moment… Sorry.

    BuddyPress was made to extend WP standart profile fields. Normally you haven’t to use WP’s profile fields (aim, jabber, bio, etc) I you need a bio you recreate one.

    The only required fields for profiles at the registering level are 4 by WP (username, email, password & pwd confirm) and the Base (field group) Name field which is added by BuddyPress.

    If you use bbpres as standalone forum aside BP, you can syncing with wordpress

    Hi @whoaloic,

    want remind some points
    – posts are handled by WordPress. BuddyPress speciality are the members, not publication.
    When group members want to talk together, they can use the notice editor for brief messages or if you install bbpres they can use the forum.

    -It exist a buddypress group blog plugin, who allows group members to use a blog, similar to the main blog.

    – BuddyPress features are developped if there is a general need, rarely for particular usage.

    Of course, you can suggest an ehancement on Trac. To ogin use same credentials as on this forum. Details are explained here.

    If you feel concerned by BuddyPress development, i suggest to express your opinion by participating on the brand new 2015 BuddyPress survey. πŸ˜‰

    i tested the function and it works on my install. Do you use a cache plugin ? If yes, clear it and try again.

    You could also try to do that directly in the activity template, via your child theme.
    See bp_has_activities in bp-templates/bp-legacy/buddypress/activity/activity-loop.php

    But this will also affect the whole site activities.

    Activity Loop

    Profile specific what’s new update activity doesn’t exist outside of a user activity page.
    In other words, when you call the action filter activity_update, you’ll receive updates from “members”, “groups” and “swa activity” which is default.

    To understand, open your DB and go to bp-activity table.
    You’ll see component, type and action rows, which are used to built the SWA.
    And the comp xprofile doesn’t include activity_update action

    More doc about this in /buddypress/bp-activity-template.php:166

    @danbp

    How do I modify ONLY the SWA ?

    the function applies to the whole site.
    See if this works for you: $retval['action'] = 'activity_update';

    hi @vikingpoker,

    I’m sorry to hear that BuddyPress has upset you.
    Members are the heart of BuddyPress and the plugin comes with anything necessary to let you manage them.

    We might be able to help, would you please let us know exactly which components you activated during the BP setup ?

    BuddyPress use the WordPress page system for internal purpose only. Content is shown dynamically, depending the context. When you click on a username, BP calls the pre defined member page and use the appropriate template to show the profile.

    BuddyPress has also his own menu, on which you’ll find activity, members, groups so far you have activate the respective component. To access this menu, go to dashboard > appearence > menu. If you don’t see it, go to the top right corner of the screen and open the sceen option, and check “buddypress”.

    You’re using a framework theme, which is not the easiest to handle if you have not much experience with WP theing. I tested it a while ago and can understand your disapointment. You may probably find good advice about BuddyPress on the Hueman support forum.

    I would recommend you to use 2015 or 14 theme during the time you familiarize yourself with BuddyPress.

    I invite you to read also the Codex to start with your BuddyPress.

    Oh, and if you don’t understand why this is not a #1 topic in this forum, it’s probably because a large majority of user haven’t this issue. And discover here all what you can do with BuddyPress. πŸ˜‰

    hi @matthias70,

    once BuddyPress is installed, you have to set pretty permalinks.
    Syncing profiles with WP users is also recommended (in BP settings).

    If you use a standalone bbpress forum, check also his settings.

    Installing Group and Sitewide Forums

    Also, question related to bbpress have to be asked on the bbpress support forum

    hi @wolfied,

    it’s difficult to help if you don’t give details.

    BP/WP version, install type, PHP version, theme name and used plugins. An URL would be welcome too, at least to the mentionned topic. Thank you.

    1) yes, you have allready the code to fetch the youtube field. Just echo a text into the if( $bp_this_field_name == ‘Spotlight’ )

    2) How would you be sure that a user enter the right code into the field ?
    You have to create a separate field for each provider.
    Vimeo is using <iframe src="//player.vimeo.com/video/and a doc ID like 17054419

    hi @kimovic,

    for sure you can do this ! πŸ˜‰

    See the new member-type API: https://codex.buddypress.org/developer/member-types/
    Types can be XBOX, PS3, PC for example. It’s a very robust and flexible solution.

    An other option to do that is related here:

    Hello,

    thank you for your details.
    But sorry to tell now that it would be a bit difficult to isolate what’s not working correctly on your site.

    Your PHP version is recent, so we’ll have to check the rest first. Note i’m not saying it won’t be the culprit.

    You’re using a commercial theme and i can’t help you about it. This is the responsability of the vendor and you have support accordingly to the licence.

    The other point to check is S2 Member framework.

    I hope for you that you have a development install, so you can test several things. Firstly a WP/BP install, with one of the twenty theme enabled and without any plugins.

    This base config should work correctly. If it’s ok, you enable Sweet Date. And if you discover some issue at this stage, you have to ask on the theme support.

    If it’s ok, you can enable your plugins one by one untill you isolate the culprit.

    This must be done scrupulously after each plugin activation, specially for the friend request step.

    That’s all so far.

    Configure BuddyPress

    Hi @myg0t,

    you do it wrong. WP auto embeds youtube videos automagically (and over 40 other online video providers). In a post or topic or mention, simply copy/paste the video URL, and it’s done.

    xprofile use a form with different fields. Because these fields are striped for security reason (classic form security), you can’t embed videos like previously described.

    But there is a URL field type ?
    Yes, this let you enter a video url, but the field will render the URL, not the embed action. It’s a form field and it’s striped.

    So what ?
    We will use a normal text field, and will only enter an alpha numeric value.

    How can i do this ?

    As example, we gona use this video https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=TZPN9g2pmPQ

    And to show the video on a profile, we’ll use only the doc ID: TZPN9g2pmPQ

    By entering this kind of text in a profile field, it is not striped and will be handled like an ordinary text field and throwed to DB with his filed ID and field value.

    To embed the video, we also have to add what WP does on a blog, but not on xprofile page, an iframe to control the video output, so it can be streamed correctly and be read by browsers.

    Now we first create a new field and name it Spotlight (or what ever). No matter where, you can use the Base group or any other custom group.
    We select the field type and give it a single text area type.
    Save.

    We go on a profile to modify it and enter TZPN9g2pmPQ in regard of Spotlight.
    Save.

    And voilΓ  ! The video is correctly embeded and displayed.

    As usual for customisation, we’ll use a snippet which we put into bp-custom.php

    function set_video_field( $field_value ) {
    	$bp_this_field_name = bp_get_the_profile_field_name();
    	// field name (case sensitive)
    	if( $bp_this_field_name == 'Spotlight' ) {
    		$field_value = strip_tags( $field_value );
            // building the HTML and h/w of the iframe
    		$field_value = '<iframe width="420" height="315" src="http://www.youtube.com/embed/'.$field_value.'" frameborder="0" allowfullscreen></iframe>';
    	}
    	return $field_value;
    }
    add_filter( 'bp_get_the_profile_field_value','set_video_field');

    Caution: do not remove the iframe, or video won’t work.

    Hope this help.
