ParticipantInteresting. Wonder if you could use this to create extra forums like a Miscellaneous or a General forum? I want to use the default install because I like the way it all integrated with the group forums, but I wanted to have some general forums for random stuff that I really don’t want to have to force people to sign up to that group just to post there. Right now, having to skin and deal with external bbpress installation seems more of a hassle than dealing with the random forum for me.

ParticipantAn alternative way of accessing the admin panel – WARNING – this could be a big security problem is left in place, depending on your setup:
— copy your bb-config.php file from your WPMU root dir into the /wp-content/plugins/buddypress/bp-forums/bbpress directory.
— load up the bbPress admin panel in a browser and do what you need done (activate plugins, etc)
— DELETE the bb-config.php file in your /wp-content/plugins/buddypress/bp-forums/bbpress directory because if you don’t then someone could access the forum directly.

ParticipantI figured out how to handle this situation – assuming that someone is using the integrated bbPress plugin and not an external install. Here’s what you do to get access to the admin panel in bbPress:
— download and unzip a copy of bbpress onto your site somewhere in a hidden location.
— copy the bb-config.php file from your WPMU root directory into your hidden bbPress installation
— edit the bb-config.php file so that the $bb->uri variable points to the right location for your hidden bbPress installation.
Open the hidden directory in a browser and login with your admin account. That’s all there is to it. With that done you can access the admin interface.
Be careful not to mess anything up
I can’t be responsible if something goes wrong on your site!

Participantcool, that something I didn’t know, but still, I can’t understand what the reason is. Why is the standalone version somehow different than separate one, since even the php files look the same?
Same question, why can’t I access to the admin panel?
Just to know if there is a specific reason.
And just to be sure, once I install the external version, and I integrate it in buddypress, will buddypress show the bbpress plugin including the support forum one? Because I don’t have any intention to let the users access to the general forum anyway, it must work like it works with buddypress, that is accessing only through the groups.

KeymasterTo use bbPress plugins, you need a seperate bbPress install, not the integrated sort installed by BuddyPress.

ParticipantI think we’re kind of in the same boat – and the help I was given in another thread was that for THAT kind of control, you need to disable bbpress within BuddyPress and do bbpress as its own, separate install.
Of course, if I’m off on that, someone will likely pounce in short order.

Participantthanks for the answer!
I use the internal one, do I need then to install an external one to use the plugin?
Even though, I use the forum only through the buddypress groups, will be the support forum visualization enabled under buddypress group forums?
Thank you very much.

ParticipantI managed to figure it out. It’s a shame it doesn’t work as a classic forum where the administrator control the overall forum structure, however I can see, and appreciate, the use case which it serves.

ParticipantDon’t use the bbpress inside buddypress and install bbpress stand-alone, so install it seperate and make it deep integration.

KeymasterThe red light / green light thing you see here is a bbPress plugin called Support Forum:
https://bbpress.org/plugins/topic/support-forum/
If you’re using an external bbPress install, check out that plugin.

Will probably not work off the bat in BP 1.1+ without some modification.

Participantbut I noticed there is a plugin support, moreover what about moderation? Do I miss something? If you say that there is no difference, I won’t even try to install again an external version to check it

ParticipantExternal one just gives you the basic forum admin. You have the ability to create additional forums that don’t belong to groups. With the default one click method, you have to create a group for every forum that you want to create.

ParticipantI think I found a bug..
the solution to this little issue is.
Go to your bb-config.php, find the line where it sais “$bb->uri”
it is probably
http://yourdomain.com/wp-content/plugins/buddypress/bp-forums/bbpress/it should be the URL to your forum set up. For ex.http://yourdomain.com/forums/Then it nicely copies all the forum topics opened through Buddypress to the BBpress instaltion.
Now I have to make it look like the rest of the website.
have a look > http://ecoflare.eu
instalation of WPMU 2.8.6 & Buddypress 1.1.3 & bbPress 1.0.2

ParticipantI have the same problem here. after the deep dive installation the Forum part of buddypress stoped to work. Any idea why?
I followed this tutorial for the deep integration

Thanks for any help!

ParticipantIntegrating an external bbpress is quite straightforward, I made it and it works/looks as well as the default one.
My question was different:
Is there any difference to use the default one or the external one? Which benefits do I have using the external one? Will I have some special features available using the admin panel that I can’t access with the default one?
Thanks
January 15, 2010 at 3:13 am #60811In reply to: BBPress: default installation or external one?
symm2112
ParticipantI know that the tutorial is for external bbpress integration. What I’m saying is that it was written before you had the option for linking bp to bbpress inside of buddypress. If I delete my bbconfig and reinstall forums, do I need to go through the full install including the cookies or do I only have to go to a certain point and then let buddypress handle it. I know that once I select external bbpress an let it integrae, I can then delete my old install files because it takes over. I just didn’t know at what point it takes over.
Thanks for linking me to the guide again. Was going to have to dig through old links to find it.
