MemberYes as Brandon says
The solution is to add
define( ’BP_ENABLE_USERNAME_COMPATIBILITY_MODE’, true );
to the top of the define list in the wp-config.php file. Fixed for things like john.smith not sure about other characters.
Thanks Brandon – though I figured it out a wee while ago from a similar problem posted in BuddyPress Trac.

ParticipantOh wow, this is GREAT News!
Thank you Boone for addressing this issue, it was really frustrating.I tried implementing the patch, but there are 2 files I can’t find (bp-members/bp-members-functions.php) & (bp-members/bp-members-template.php). I don’t even have these directories in my version of BuddyPress.
I am using Buddypress 1.2.8
Am I missing something?

MemberHi,
My bad!!! Apologies for the earlier posts.
After installation, I went through the setup (which is different from the earlier version). That took care of display of pages properly.
Thanks for fixing the page and subpage feature – it is much easier now (don’t have to mess with the code). Ordering of the tabs even that of buddypress works great. Thanks for these fixing these nifty issues.

ParticipantThere is a groupDocs plugin, and Boon is working on a great doc’s plugin. I think it might be set for users too..

ParticipantIt looks like registration is not enabled in your WordPress backend.
If you’re running WP single, go to “Settings” > “General” and check “Anyone can register”. On WP multisite, go to “Network Admin” > “Settings” and make your selection at “Registration Settings”.

MemberOk, I figured what is happening is *something* (either BP itself or the BP Template Pack) is changing the link in the WP editor to point to the forums/index.php file, instead of the theme’s index.php file.
I edited the homepage on my website by going directly to the themes folder via FTP and downloading the template’s index file, then resaving it in the same location. Annoying, and not sure why/when/by what the change has been made, but there’s a workaround.

Participant@djpaul: Thanks Paul, I would really appreciate any thoughts and feedback when its out, as I can imagine the coding will be a little hazy in places. Should be fairly easy to understand though.

KeymasterHey, looks like a novel approach — I’ll have a play when you get the plugin out

ParticipantGood news all… I’ve finally got this working as intended, and I’m currently in the process of packing it all together in to a plugin for release to the community over the next few days. Just creating a small webpage where people can download it, and I’ll hopefully have an online user guide.
Screenshot:
http://www.obscuresounds.com/obscureavatar-beta.jpgFor now it works like this:
1. designers can create transparent png “parts” of an avatar divided in to 3 sections (body, face, head).
2. the plugin can differentiate between male and female by parsing in a string (m, or f), so again designers can create gender specific avatars based on needs.
3. users who upload avatars via BP will bypass obscureavatars, and the plugin will only use gravatar as a last resort for groups, and blogs.
4. it works for both wordpress, and buddypress.Essentially it sets out to do what I’ve wanted – to make the avatars a bit easier to work with for designers. Although I mainly develop backend stuff I love UI design, and one thing I’ve noticed is that pretty much all wordpress projects either use gravatars tacky generated content, or the dull wordpress avatar. Not only that but they fail to facilitate basic gender styles, which is essential for social network propagation now-days.
I want to continue developing this in to something more sophisticated (I’m thinking it would be cool if designers could zip their parts in to packs, so that people can interchange them in an instant), but I will only be able to do this based on its popularity and support.

KeymasterUnfortunately, 1&1 is full of crap. It’s not a trick, and it does work. Your third option is to find a better host.

ParticipantAre you on the ‘Dual Perfect’ but only with 30meg?
My only experience has been with 30 meg which often, these days, isn’t enough to run wordpress on with not too many plugins…. I would have thought 60 would be just about enough…. – but maybe someone with more experience in that area could answer….

MemberI have just talked to 1&1. They told me that the memory tricks don’t work and that I am not allowed to do that. And if I want to solve that problem I can change to a better product with more memory, the new and more expensive ones have 60 and 90MB.
The thing is that I have no clue how much memory I need… I want to install buddypress and create some profiles. The web is going to be a city guide for Madrid with reviews and photos.Do you know if 60 MB or 90MB is enough?? Any other hosting supporting WordPress, MySQL databases, more memory and a reasobale price?
Thanks
May 26, 2011 at 6:41 pm #113139aces
ParticipantThey state in their uk faq (which i hope is now out of date) that none of the memory tricks will work…
What I would like to know is if this is also a problem with their new packages, not just with their old accounts….
May 26, 2011 at 6:38 pm #113138freigeists84
MemberThank you aces, I’ll talk to them anyway and shout a little.
May 26, 2011 at 6:37 pm #113137freigeists84
Memberincreased memory in the wp-config.php, I included this line at the beginning of the php
`define (‘WP_MEMORY_LIMIT’, ‘256M’);`
also tried with 500MB and nothing happens…the errors still occur.
(May 26, 2011 at 6:31 pm #113136aces
Participant1and1 is notorious for their memory issues – you need to talk to them.
I have had a problem with them in the UK but their new uk packages are supposed to come with 90 meg and this is supposed to apply to their older (equivalent) uk packages but tech support told me today that there is a glitch that they’re looking into.
It’s winding me up seeing that 1and1 appear to have increased the memory limit to 90 meg available (I can see it set – by them – within wordpress) but it isn’t working yet….
I don’t know if that applies to the spanish 1and1 though….
EDIT: I’ve just had a look at http://1and1.es and it’s their uk equivalent ‘dual’ hosting service i’m refering to

ParticipantWho is your host?
May 26, 2011 at 6:14 pm #113132Paul Wong-Gibbs
KeymasterSounds like you’ve tried the right thing (https://codex.wordpress.org/Editing_wp-config.php#Increasing_memory_allocated_to_PHP). Try allocating more than 64Mb, or ask your host for help.
