In reply to: buddypress versus diaspora

ParticipantBut that’s the point about Diaspora, Diaspora is less about an actual social networking site such as might be created with BP and more about demonstrating the proof of concept that is ‘Decentralised Social Networking’, it and others are trying to find a way through to the goal of not having YOUR data ‘Owned’ by anyone but yourself. BP did much to counter the issue many had with the likes of Ning ‘Owning’ your data, but from the users point of view you are still locked into ONE site and there’s the other issue of countless accounts, logins etc with their data strewn around disparate sites, and would like to simply create one account that holds your social profile and you allow sites to access that as you wish.
There is a – apparently – small? but rising dissatisfaction with the likes of Farcebook, I don’t think Diaspora is setting out to compete with Farcebook but simply prove that decentralising is possible.
Talking of all this what ever happened to SocialRiver? trumpeted and heralded by WPMU blog as the next greatest thing , supposedly with support for BP, has that simply died? Judging by their blog it feels like it, however there has been a post recently, first since July , saying close to beta release!.

ParticipantTo me it seems like that this goal was a marketing strategy in order to get the project financed which worked surprisingly good. The best feature I like about this software is that that each server install is able to communicate with each other. This means that I can have friends on different domains and still share content information. This is something which I haven’t seen before.

Keymaster@ericreynolds007 – After re-reading your post, I’ve found the root of your problem.
Rename buddypress-montclairvillagelive.mo to buddypress-en_US.mo.
Also make sure to upload buddypress-en_US.po as well.
February 20, 2011 at 6:57 am #105840r-a-y
KeymasterThis is possible, but it would have to be a custom-coded plugin as such a plugin doesn’t currently exist. Shouldn’t be too hard with a little usermeta and a settings page.
If you’re talking about custom colors for other elements apart from the body’s background-color, then I can foresee problems as each BuddyPress (child) theme could be customized to oblivion!

KeymasterDoes the problem go away when you disable BuddyPress?
Error 500 is a pretty vague error.
Disable BuddyPress and re-upload the /buddypress/ folder again. Make sure you uploaded all the BuddyPress files, then reactivate it and see what happens. Also make sure your .htaccess file isn’t corrupted.

KeymasterYou can put the code from the second patch into your theme’s functions.php file.
You’ll probably have to change “bp_loaded” to “init” though.

ParticipantRunning BP 1.2.7 on WP Multisite 3.1-RC5-17466
@Boone Okay. I followed all the steps illustrated in the codex to revise 20+ labels on my site. I don’t know why things aren’t working, and I don’t understand why the codex instructions tell me to create a “languages” directory in my wp-content folder, and upload my .po and .mo files there. Boone, you wrote “as long as your .mo file is located at wp-content/plugins/buddypress/bp-languages/buddypress-mysite.mo” while the codex directs the files to wp-content/languages
I downloaded the buddypress.pot file from my bp-languages folder, then duplicated it and make my edits in Poedit. I saved the file as buddypress-en_US.po and, although I received the Poedit “initial default” error that justbishop received, Poedit saved the file and generated the .mo file.
I changed the .mo file title to buddypress-montclairvillagelive.mo (My site is montclairvillagelive.com), then created /wp-content/languages and uploaded both files to the folder.
The changes didn’t take place and I’m up the creek without a paddle.

Participant@modemlooper , thanks for the suggestion. I didn’t realized this issue. But, do we have control over this issue? How to not allow google scraping through?
Even if we can stop google scraping through some items, forum posts are still good to be exposed to google. Forum post are on at least 3 pages– Topic page, Group activity, Site activity. Personal activity(ignore this if block google on personal page)
So, at least the Group Activity and Site Activity are duplicated contents?

Participant@modemlooper, thanks for your suggestion on different forms for different users in the register.php.
I also want to change the register slug. Because spam bots know bp register slug. We can get rid of a lot of them by simply change the register slug. But, how?February 20, 2011 at 2:24 am #105820imjscn
ParticipantI made a cute bp child them, and I am a super dummy in all aspects of coding. Since bp theme works great with a super dummy, I think it should not be considered as a beast

ParticipantI’d like to give credit where credit is due. StudioPress comes to mind as one of the big theme developers who bravely went into BP theme market way before Woo did. Of course way before StudioPress officially did so, there’s WPMUDev who navigated successfully through the waters of bp-sn-parent and the member themes as well and continues to come up with great BP themes with BuddyDress. Much more kudos to the individual theme devs who released their BP themes and child themes to the BP community, even way before WPMUDev rolled out BP themes

ModeratorWoo themes can be thankful they were not dealing with the classic theme. That theme was a tangled mess.

MemberIt is easy to develop and theme in buddypress just as it is in wordpress ,you have to make use of template tags.
I’m about to release few themes for free soon.February 19, 2011 at 7:42 pm #105799Leah

ParticipantTheres a difference between adding to an established theme, and creating a standalone theme which is what it sounds like wooThemes is referring to and yes they’d be right, BP has yet to tackle this area of theming.
N.B your link is borked!
Fixed ‘http://’ is required for for external links

ParticipantBut sure would be interesting see what they have to say, don’t you think?
February 19, 2011 at 7:12 pm #105794modemlooper
ModeratorIt’s not really at hard once you figure it out. The bp templates are easy to add. I’ve added bp to numerous woo themes over the past year with little fuss.

ParticipantIf you are talking about the adminbar (very top) then the template plugin references the file from the bp-default theme in the buddypress plugin directory but you can disable that file and code your own styles or place a copy of the file in your themes folder and add an @import call to it in your style.css, then changes will be preserved when you update BP (that can be a good or bad thing depending on the changes)

Participant@Chaotic_Cannon You are forcing mercime to follow and respond to two threads on the same topic while trying to get you to focus on one; note the links posted! Please stop this
it’s bad board nettiquette, choose one thread (likely this one given the direction of the questions) and stick to it. -
