I tried the loop… this is AWESOME!!

@boonebgorges: I agree with @r-a-y ’s advice — of course, without knowing the software structure of BP, it’s harder to find specific functions. Still… understanding the underlying concept of the “global” loop has freed my thought-processes. I had read the documentation on the Loop but didn’t grasp that this was such a basic underlying concept.

    Thanks, guys!

@bofw – I don’t experience this problem with the default BP theme.

Anyway, some general updates about the plugin. Sorry for the lack of progress! (blame it on me moderating the forums!)

    Next version will definitely include:
-activity stream resizing + activity stream permalink resizing
-changes to caching logic for performance reasons
-support for WP Embed handlers (for developers to extend the embed list; more info can be found here – https://codex.wordpress.org/Function_Reference/wp_embed_register_handler)
-CSS class around oembedded object (this one’s for the designers)
    -support for group descriptions
-fix fatal error if activity, forum or group components are disabled

Btw, please post new questions or bug reports in the new plugin group:

    @r-a-y Hi Matey

We are having an issue with both plugins (activity and comments). When you add text before or after the link to be embedded (e.g. a description or comment) it only displays the embedded item and not the text before or after.

    Any ideas?

    Cheers!

Well, I just tried out the buddypress-like plugin … I’m assuming the same applies?

It would be simple enough if there were simply a permalink to the original buddypress status update in the activity stream, no?

right now it would need to be on the activity stream (in order to save the reference to a forum topic)

but the underlying bbPress Favorites functionality is still there – just someone need to wrap it and bring it into the BuddyPress fold (which i suspect i’ll try this myself in the coming weeks) – probably won’t work with the BP favorites though (as that is only tied to activity records)

more of general feedback – i think the new site is great and all the hard work that goes into something like this (especially pulling in the plugins to groups)

but i find myself a little distracted – i can’t put my finger on it (maybe since i’ve tweaked my own stuff to bring things more inline) but something with the disparity between sections (activity). i hate being vague though so I realize this is not helping ;)

One weird bug – after sending a private message: my adminbar shows a new notification but obviously nothing is there as i sent one instead of receiving.

I have tried these and the problem with them is that they incorporate the admin dashboard to create events. If only the admin is creating events that’s fine but if you have users who need to create events the setup is way too confusing for them. In addition you would have to give everyone of the users who wanted to create events contributor or higher access. These are just not really BuddyPress friendly they need to work just like the other functions like groups or forums.

I agree with peterverkooijen and scotm.
Forget the easy admin, build a solid core and a flexible API for developers.

If someone wants an easy admin panel, let someone build a plugin for buddypress that allows them to do that with a theme.

@finni3 Communities are never straight out of the box and they shouldn’t be.

Mike Pratt said 1 day ago:

@peterverkooijen @hnla I take the other side of your “little diff b/t blogs and forums” opinion. To me, a blog post is a significantly more “deliberate” piece of content … For ex, we have a group called the “12th Man Training Table” which centers on athlete nutrition. Folks want to post recipes for training means. Clearly, forum topics are the wrong vehicle. On the other hand, there are raging debates in that group that definitely belong in the forum construct..not a blog post with comments … So Peter, please keep in mind that what you would do to BP would build a BP that works for Peter, but it’s not necessarily the only use case around, that’s all.”

Mike Pratt, you miss the point. I’m talking about how the script and database is structured, not what you as a user should do with it. Functionally a blog post and a forum topic are the same thing; a piece of content that others can comment on. Similarly there only needs to be one way to store (threaded) comments. There is no need to duplicate that in forum thread, wires, etc. There is no need to have variations of posts and comments in different places in the database.

I’m talking about taking redundancies out, boiling down the architecture to the lowest number of necessary parts, less is more, keep it simple stupid. That does not mean you as a user will have less options. WP blog posts already provides many ways to make very different types of posts. In my P2-based custom theme I have started making a clear distinction between ‘status updates’ and ‘blog posts’ using categories. Apparently WP 3.0 will have more sophisticated hooks to do different things with different types of content.

Same for comments. There are already lots of different things you can do with comments, from IntenseDebate and other plugins to built-in threaded options, inline Ajax commenting and styling possibilities via your theme. Buddypress should leverage basic WordPress building blocks as much as possible instead of adding new database tables and third scripts like BBpress. Ultimately a lot of this is for the theme developers to develop. They could develop out-of-the-box themes for different use cases; schools, companies, sport clubs, etc. BP should focus on a solid core and flexible API.

Not sure what you mean by ‘unpublish’ exactly in the BP context. I would guess that the best thing to do would be to use the WP(MU) dashboard to change their user role to ‘Inactive’ or ‘Blocked’.

Fake edit: Testing that, because your question made me curious, though, shows unexpected behaviour. I changed a user to ‘Inactive’ on my testbed, logged in as that user just fine afterwards. And, as I expected, their profile and content is still visible in Buddypress itself, as is their blog.

I wonder if you could wrap the single member profile page in a div that is hidden if their status is ‘Inactive’ or something like that. Seems kludgy, though.

Real edit, later: Or maybe not, in terms of logging in. Some very weird behaviour happening…

I have BuddyPress installed with WordPress Single User with the BuddyPress plugin and I didn’t see the Create A Group button either.. so I Turned OFF: Let Users Create and Join Groups and TURNED IT BACK ON.. and the button now shows!

Also.. the place where you see the button is: yourwebsite dot com/groups/

You will need to create a link to that “Groups” page as it doesn’t appear in the Admin Bar normally.

I sort of got it working @derekbolden. But needed to do much in the way of some css stuff, and a few other minor changes. Hopefully that was not because I have the Hybrid theme.
I do not have calendars working. and I have not worked out how the forum integration works.
But check out my hardly used site – suckitupprincess.net – which has the events in it – with two events

I’m not sure there’s really a way to categorize what the membership will be. Basically people who’ve purchased one of my internet marketing products.

When they buy something I sign them up automatically for the community and then can hook up with other folks to network.

A network of “networkers: I suppose would be the closest.

@mercime thanks for that post, that certainly helps.

I’m thinking more of the “must haves” ie: you wouldn’t be able to survive without Flash Player, or Adobe Reader, or a Zip utility on your computer, or I wouldn’t anyway. More like that, stuff that is just a must have to building a cool functional community.

Yeah, I’d say that because Buddypress is a bit kitchen-sinky, in my experience it’s a good idea to think about what kind of community you’re going to try and build (or move to BP), then think about what kind of functionality they might want, then how to build it, then look at plugins or code snippets or whatever that will allow you to do that. That’s generally best-practice, anyway.

A default Buddypress install can be confusing and daunting for new users.

    Take a note of this

Of course when WP 3.0 and BP 1.3 come out – all bets are off till plugins have been upgraded to both WP and BP versions :-)

I’d just go into the MySQL database for the old one with PHPMyAdmin or whatever tool you use for a MySQL GUI and export table by table, then import to the corresponding bbPress tables in Buddypress. You’ll need to hand-edit some stuff in the meta tables and generally mess around, but I’ve done it a few times on my testbed and it’s worked just fine.

Set up a testbed BP install first and populate it with some test data to see how things fit together — it’s not all that complicated. Then try the export-import process on some test installs, figure out what needs to be done. Basically, now that I thought to look at it, what Boone talks about in the post r-a-y linked. ;-)

@jivany – Read what Boone did for the CUNY commons:
    http://dev.commons.gc.cuny.edu/2009/12/06/upgrading-from-buddypress-1-0-to-1-1/

Pay special attention to the beginning and end of the post.
