Problem: Buddy Press crashes my website (505 error on admin, 404 errors on pages).
History:
1. Installed Buddy Press. Activated it. During setting up stage, I was asked whether I would want to used Buddy Press template, integrate it to my existing theme, or do nothing (manually insert later). I chose to integrate. That’s when I was prompted to install the template pack.
2. I installed the template pack. Activated it. Then, my website crashes. My web pages get 404 messages. My admin gets 500 error.
3. I changed the template pack name as you suggested. It worked. I got back my admin. Sad to say, I still cannot get Buddy Press to work. I deactivated the template pack. Deleted it. Installed it again. Activated it. Then, when I activate the Buddy Press, my website crashes again.
4. So, I deactivated the template. Deleted it. I deleted the Buddy Press (apparently, I cannot deactivate it since it’s status is not activated, but I did activate it). Anyway, I went back to square one. I installed the Buddy Press. Activated it. Website crashes.
5. I did a clean-up, to be sure. I deleted again Buddy Press and Template Pack. I even went out to deleted entries in my database (following instructions in your page on deleting Buddy Press). I wanted to start from scratch. When I went through everything again, my website still crashes.
Basically, I’m already clueless as to what’s the problem. Any suggestions/tips are very much welcomed.
@DJPaul Mr. Paul Gibbs, I think you’re the most qualified person I know here who could help me. I can’t get Buddy Press to work on my website.

@Paul Gibbs Could you help me? I’m trying to uninstall Buddy Press hoping to make a fresh installation. It seems I can’t deactivate the plug-in. I deleted the folders (Buddy Press and Template Pack). I even cleaned my database of Buddy Press. But, I still get the functions showing on my website (e.g. activate, members, etch.). How do I remove them? Better yet, how do I clean my website with Buddy Press? Thank you.
Thanks Boone & Paul! I think I’ve got it narrowed down to conflict with ‘BuddyPress Like’ plugin and/or a couple of bbPress related plugins (‘bbPress’, ‘bbPress Integration’).

I recently updated BuddyPress to 1.5.
When I go to my site, it shows ll members My friends and Mentions
It doesnt show All members, it shows ll members.
The login widget does not appear.
Tabs now work.

@echoman Thanks! You helped get back my admin. I appreciated it. Now, anybody else who can help me? I really appreciate the assistance.
So far, I deleted both Buddy Press and Template Pack. Uploaded them. When I try to activate Buddy Press, I get a 505 error. My website crashes. Is there a way to fix this? If not, how do I clean my site with the files of Buddy Press? As I recall, the instruction said that the installation is reversible. How? Given my situation. Thank you!

I wish i knew glad it worked though. I honestly think allot of issues are with buddypress 1.5 and this is too early of a release. I myself am waiting for a reply on one of my post. i guess reinstall the forum. It’s kind of the same thing when you have an operating system (ubuntu linux) and a release comes out and there are bugs. So for now i think I’m just going to downgrade back to buddypress 1.2.10

@echoman I tried what you did. It worked. After deleting template pack, I was able to access my admin. I reinstalled it. Until there, everything is good. When I activate the Buddy Press Forum, it all comes crashing down again (505 error). Any suggestions?
Hi there,
I would like to add the “Display Name publicly as” choice from the wordpress profile to the Settings Page of Buddypress. Then I do not need anyone to get into the backend and users can choose their preferred display name within the buddypress settings.
Any help/pointers would be appreciated!
Great work on BP 1.5 btw. Works really well on my new try and error install with the buddypress theme!!!

Yeah i know what you mean last night i did the same and realized it probably conflicted with the template pack, so i went to my file manager deleted the bp-template pack and reloaded my site it worked. Then i reinstalled the bp-template pack it worked fine.
@Paul Gibbs I get a 500 error after renaming the template pack folder in the plug-in directory and accessing mysite.com/wp-admin/plugins.php.
Why do you have BP_ENABLE_MULTIBLOG enabled? Do you really need it? (You only need it if you are going to be using a BP theme, with groups, members, etc, on more than one blog on the network.) If you comment that line out, I bet your wizard will start working.
That said, the fact that it doesn’t work for BP_ENABLE_MULTIBLOG could be a bug. I’ve opened a ticket so it can be checked out. https://buddypress.trac.wordpress.org/ticket/3600
@karmatosed I installed BuddyPress from the admin bar, i.e., I installed the plugin using the add new in the plugins (admin bar/plugins/add new). During the installation, where you’re given three options (use Buddy Press theme, integrate to your theme [requires CSS and PHP knowledge], and don’t do anything), I chose the integrate to your theme. Afterwards, I was prompted to install the Buddy Press template pack. I did. Afterwards, I clicked save and finish. Then, boom. I lost access to my website. I get 404 on every page, save the homepage. And, I get a 500 message when I try to access my admin.
Probably the theme is out of date and needs updating for BuddyPress 1.5
@MajinSaha Hi. Did you complete the Install Wizard after activating BuddyPress? What type of server are you on (linux, windows)? Does your existing WordPress site use permalinks with “index.php” as part of the URL?
Yesterday I installed a fresh wordpress and then added some buddypress themes and then installed the plugin. Every theme but on worked fine but one was overlapped in certain parts by the default buddypress theme. I used a theme called Citizen Kane which worked fine but I had to re install everything and now the Citizen Kane theme is being overlapped by the default theme in places like the header and menu and causing certain areas to be displayed out of place. Is this familiar to anyone??

Yes i now know its the default theme for a fact because i went my file manager(public_html/wp-content/plugins/buddypress/bp-themes) replaced the current theme to the former buddypress theme extracted it and went back to the homepage and the leave a reply not add a reply does not show.
Hi all!
I just installed BuddyPress 1.5 today for my WordPress and I cannot see pages other than the home page. I’m using a default BP theme. Whenever I click on links such as “Activity”, “Groups” etc ( Including “Register” ) I only get “404 Not Found” message.
Did I forget to configure something or is this a bug? I checked all the options in the Dashboard and didn’t find anything suspicious.
This is the first time I use BP, by the way.

I have spent a while fiddling around with this. Even installed a couple of third party modules to try and force it but nothing’s working. I can only assume this is something that has been turned off in the core.
