Memberhey, this is a great idea! It did not work when I entered the bp-social.php in PluginMU but I am also running the pay to blog plugin and I think there is a conflict there or with something. Hey my site is http://theodoremedia.com and if you come up with a fix, please post here or email me grizzlygroundswell@chadeverson.com I have had some really exciting success with twitter, now over 13,000 followers on @chadteverson @clayoxen @EWEverson @grizzlyfeed @grizzlyradiorss @grizzlyvideorss @socialistsqurrl
There is some incredible reach that can be gained through twitter by extending my online efforts through twitter.com
I came up with a strategy you may find interesting http://www.fightingsquad.theodoremedia.com look for the post on twitter. people are getting 1000 followers in 5 days and keep growing every day! If you use the strategy keep me in touch with how much success you are having!

ParticipantPers,
What exactly do you mean by “main page”? I am on the main page of my BP site and i still see the “test” in the dropdown “my account” in the top bar. I am logged in, though. Screenshots would be helpful.
Just want to confirm to determine perhaps if it’s MY code or truly a BP bug.

Participanteh .. there’s a bug in buddypress, when you’re on the main page, “Test” is missing from the admin bar. If you enter a member page, it’s there. I’ve reported this in ticket #283

MemberI am having a similar problem. Except when in http://www.grizzlygroundswell.theodoremedia.com when a user goes to sign up it takes them to the WP login without offering an option to register.
So I need to know where I need to change that redirect.
Another problem when you go to any user’s profile the tab says “nothing found for username”
Just two concerns that I need to figure out. Loving BuddyPress so far! Check it out! http://theodoremedia.com our conservatives are loving it!

Memberamazing work! I would like to help translate it to spanish, please let me know what I can do!
EDIT: I added the two pieces of code to my bp-core-settings.php and it just broke my site, loaded a blank page instead of the content.

ParticipantGreat Nic. I’m developing another version of this that expands on the navigation.
Remember that this isn’t really a plugin, more like a starting point FOR a plugin.

ParticipantI don’t want to confuse buddypress with the various microblogging tools (twitter, laconica, etc.) but Openmicroblogger.org has taken the Twitter Tools for WordPress plugin, for example, and made it work with their platform so that you can post to Twitter from within Openmicroblogger (much like how it works wth WordPress).
More importantly, the OMB platform lets you ‘subscribe’ to your Twitter friends or other users so that their tweets complete with Gravatar can appear in your stream on the OMB network of servers. Having this ability to ‘pull’ your subscribed network of users, over and above a lifestream of your own tweets or whathaveyou, whould make the ‘social’ plugin in Buddypress even more powerful. Hope I explained this in some manner of clarity.
Cheers

ParticipantGood Work!!
i write a post on it, too http://buddypressdev.org/starting-developing/starting-writing-a-extending-component-with-bp-test/
I added your plugin here http://buddypressdev.org/plugins/bp-test/

ParticipantScotm, this might be possible. I’ll look into it. I’m more interested in the BuddyPress then “reinventing the wheel” on a lifestream or social plugin. Those have been done, and i’m still looking over the more popular ones to see if we can convert those WordPress plugins into BP. But I’ve got a feeling writing something custom is going to be alot more useful and unlimiting.

ParticipantSome had an issue downloading the file from the blog. Here is a confirmed working link, just in case you tried but failed and were so pissed you didn’t leave a blog comment.

Here is the code: http://davidbisset.com/wp-content/uploads/2008/12/bp-social.txt

ParticipantAdding a new menu item to the member theme, NOT the top bar. I did this with my recent example of “social” (view the screenshots):
http://www.davidbisset.com/2008/12/23/buddypress-adding-twitter-and-friendfeed/
This is a clean slate version of that above, if that makes sense.
EDIT: Duh. This actually DOES BOTH. This will add the same menu item in “my account” WITH submenu navigation in the grey “BuddyPress” bar that is present on the top page when you login.

Moderator@nicolagreco, I can’t sign up on http://buddypressdev.org/. Everything is ok, until I need to get the email with my password. There’s no email for 30 hpurs already. What should I do? I’m very interested in this project.

ParticipantOooh Nicola. It’s not good to push ‘send’ without thinking. There are always consequences for our actions. We’ll just have to come up with an appropriate punishment for your thoughtless behavior.
In the meantime I moved it.

ParticipantDavid – Love where you’re heading with this. When you say “menu” do you mean Admin bar or the Home/Blog/Members/Etc menus in the BP header. I hacked the latter but would much rather do it thru a plugin such as you’ve developed
