    BuddyPress is a set of WordPress MU plugins.

    Not sure what you mean by changing your site? Buddypress is just the suite of plugins to extend WPMU, so what do you mean change site to buddypress? You can add the functionality to any theme, so you don’t have to use the buddypress-home and member themes if that is what you are referring to.

    Hello Andy and all at BuddyPress. I’ve put up a demo version of RC1 and it’s working great w/ one exception. When I use the buddypress-home theme as my main theme, the comment fields disappeared from my site. You cannot comment on any post.

    The theme I was using beforehand, called “Modern Notepad” worked great and if I swap it out w/ the buddypress-home theme, the comment fields come right back. I ran through each file in both templates and found the culprit to be functions.php inside the budypress-home theme. If I take the functions.php document from my old theme and place it in the buddypress-home theme folder, the comments come right back.

    Now I know that’s not the best course of action so I’m wondering if anyone else has had this problem and can tell me what I should modify in functions.php to correct the issue?

    I have “Allow Comments” and “Allow Pings” checked in my admin for the articles and I have deactivated all of my plugins as well with no luck.

    Thanks very much for your time and effort on this great project!

    Is anyone else seeing a bug in IE whilst using the forums in groups.

    The bug is: the admin bar is appearing in each row of the list of forum posts in a group and the text for each post row seems to get smaller.

    //

    I should add – this is IE7

    Can the individual components of BuddyPress (ie. Friends plugin, groups plugin, etc) be used on a standard MU installation without BuddyPress? I’d like to utilize the friends and groups plugins, but I don’t want to change my site to BuddyPress.

    Thanks!

    This should not happen, I’ve tested in multiple levels of subdirectory installations and it all worked without the need for changes.

    There must be something wrong with your setup if you are seeing these issues. Are you running into further problems?

    I had super-cache installed, with wpmu 2.7 and buddypress RC-1, and everything seemed to be working fine, except for I would get a 500 Internal Error on Wp-activate (when the new user clicks on the email link that is sent to them to activate the account). Everything else worked fine, wp-signup worked like a breeze, and all of my pages and posts were cached as they should be.

    Once I uninstalled Super-Cache, wp-activate worked again fine. I uninstalled all of my mu-plugins (re-captcha, google analytics, buddypress redirect) and just put super cache and buddypress in there, and i still got the 500 internal error on wp-activate. When I removed it and added the others back in, everything works fine.

    Any ideas? I’d love to have super cache working, but not at the expense of adding new members.

    I have added links to the navigation using a separate php file in mu-plugins using this code

    <?php

    function add_contact_to_main_menu() {

    $class = (bp_is_page(‘contact’)) ? ‘ class=”selected” ‘ : ”;

    echo ‘<li ‘ . $class. ‘>‘ . __( ‘Contact’, ‘buddypress’ ) .’‘;

    }

    add_action(‘bp_nav_items’,’add_contact_to_main_menu’);

    ?>

    this works beautifully but the only problem is that “Home” is highlighted instead of “Contact” as the selected state. Any ideas?

    Devrim, you can’t just set this stuff up outside of a function call. You should download the skeleton component to understand how to write WPMU capable plugins.

    You need to wrap your code in a function then call it on the ‘wp’ action.

    function mystuff() {

    …

    }

    add_action( ‘wp’, ‘mystuff’ );

    You are running into problems because your code is executing before anything has been set up. BuddyPress is entirely action based, if you start programming outside of this, you’ll run into many issues.

    Are you using a custom members theme?

    If so it won’t be RC1 compatible.

    You might be able to patch the groups module to get the forums working…

    Download RC1 – open members theme folder, copy the groups folder, paste it over your current groups folder and it might fix your problem.

    Of course, backup your current groups just in case.

    I can’t get my group forums to work now. Whenever I try to post something I get this message “Are you sure you want to do this?” and only the option to “please try again” I’ve deleted my old groups and created new ones as well.

    I believe that section is called “userbar” and there’s a userbar.php in the buddypress-member theme directory. Unless the user is logged in it displays the login form, otherwise it calls bp_get_nav() to display the user nav options.

    and to whom it may concern; these kind of errors are discouraging. If we had a decent buddypress alternative we would have switched already. $bp related errors* and errors that belong to the core, very demotivating as they are making our whole system unstable.

    We spend hours first on the system try to find what’s wrong, and hours on internet try to find if anyone else has a fix.

    the same scaling problems happens with the bp demo too…to solve them you should rebuild the whole css..

    After upgrading to 1.0 RC1 I get the following error message when trying to access my messages:

    Fatal error: Cannot use object of type stdClass as array in /home/********/public_html/beta/wp-content/member-themes/buddypress-member/functions.php on line 14

    I didn’t upload the themes but I did upload the functions.php to the buddypress-theme as directed above. Any tips?

    This is more a how-to than a request for help, at this point. Just in case others are interested in how to do this.

    BuddyPress really seems to be designed to run in the root of a WPMU install, but for my purposes, that’s not what I wanted to do. I already had a functioning and active WPMU install at http://macaulay.cuny.edu/eportfolios . I wanted to have BP functioning for that WPMU install, but in a directory below that, reserving that root main blog for my “gateway.” I wanted to have http://macaulay.cuny.edu/eportfolios/social for the BP install.

    It installed fine, and most things worked right from the beginning, but there were some difficulties.

    First–the links across the top of the main page (the logo, the tabs for home, blog, members, groups, and blogs) did not work properly on the member pages (they worked on the home page). They directed to macaulay.cuny.edu/eportfolios/whatever, instead of macaulay.cuny.edu/eportfolios/social/whatever.

    So to fix that, I went into wp-content/member-themes/buddypress-member/header.php

    Line 37, 40, 41, 42, 44, and 49, I changed the URL to be a hardcoded reference to the appropriate pages.

    Then I found that the search bar (in the top bar) did not work–it was also trying to search /eportfolios instead of /eportfolios/social.

    For that one I had to go to wp-content/mu-plugins/bp-core.php and add /social to the urls in lines 1266, 1269, 1272.

    That fixed the search bar nicely on the member pages, but not on the home page–and I couldn’t figure that out, so I just commented out the lines calling for that search bar in wp-content/themes/buddypress-home/header.php . If it didn’t work right, I didn’t want it!

    I also wanted the hotlinks in people’s profiles to work–and they didn’t–so for that I had to change wp-content/mu-plugins/bp-xprofile/bp-xprofile-filers.php (line 51) to use the actual url /eportfolios/social/members/?s= instead of the site_url and MEMBERS_SLUG .

    I guess ultimately there should be a plugin or a setting in the admin to help with all this? Then upgrades wouldn’t require re-doing all these little changes. But overall, I think it works, and it really is possible to have BP RC1 installed in a sub (or sub-sub) directory.

    Hehe..

    Same as I tried.. If you reduce width, iexplorer has problems with showing elements correctly when scaling down.. Avatars are not at right position etc. .. Firefox looks perfect.. I hate Iexplorer (; Your theme as well has problems with iexplorer. Try to scale down and reduce width of browser your background is squeezing

    if you see it with an high resolution it is centered, i’ve have a 1440×900 and a 1680×1050 monitors. However, just reduce body width to see it centered on lower resolutions, and make some tweaks.

    #38104

    well great looking but some scaling problems with internetexplorer.. I had to fight with it too, now i just used margin, doesn’t looks very good when scaling down, but elements stay where they are..

    The Buddypress demo isn’t centered as screenshot is! I was installing RC1 and its not centered, but full size!

    the demo too has white borders on both sides…and is centered.

    However the css is fully customizable, here is my first attempt: http://wikiroma.it/index.php

    #38102

    well i meant that the theme is centered and has white border on the right/left.. That was exactly what I was trying all the time.. (for advertising and Web2.0 looking reasons..)
