    If you don’t want to use widgets, I believe you can find what you’re looking for here… https://codex.buddypress.org/developer-docs/action-reference/

    …but you should be using widgets as it’s much easier to make changes in the future instead of keeping track of hard coded function calls in your theme;)

    speaking from previous wpmu experience

    Hey IB,

    I think you’re current setup should work for what you need to do. You may need to add a couple plugins though.

    You said these were the trouble items…

    site.com > WPRemix theme.

    user.site.com > BuddyPress Home theme – but no widgets setup (I thought that that should have gone to either the user’s profile or the user’s blog?).

    My set up is similar.

    site.com > Using main BP theme

    user.site.com > Using a default theme I specified using a plugin called “New Blog Defaults” that allows me to set the default theme for any blog that’s created.

    Now, the difference might be that my version of user.site.com is actually a user blog address, not just a user name. Does the user your trying access have a blog domain as well? Or just a user (profile) name?

    If it’s just a profile name, then the url would be http://site.com/members/membername/

    First off, loving buddypress and working on getting this rolled out on our site by this Friday. However, I was curious, how can I allow my admins to edit user’s profile info if they deem it unacceptable? Also, we were going to manually upload each user’s avatar, but to do that I would need to be able to edit my users profiles….

    Am I missing something, or can we get this feature added?

    Thanks!

    Apologies in advance for the long post – I’m after a bit of guidance. Ok, here’s the scenario:

    I used to hit mountains and hills hiking and camping, and am getting back into it. There’s a fair few friends that are interested in joining in, all with various levels of experience, but some are green to the outdoors.

    I currently run a vBulletin site that some of these friends are members of. Others aren’t but are on Facebook, and others aren’t members of any social networking sites as yet.

    The site I create I want ultimately to do two main things:

    1) Be a one-stop shop for information, CMS stylee.

    a) Give information on upcoming events.

    b) Give articles/information about advice for kit (eg boots, waterproofs, layers, tents, stoves, etc).

    c) Give articles/information on skills (eg map & compass, GPS, etc, etc).

    d) Have a blog for relevant thoughts.

    2) Encourage discussion for upcoming events and people to upload walking logs, photos, etc.

    a) Allow individual profiles.

    b) Allow uploading of photos and videos.

    c) Allow basic forum discussion, and other commenting.

    d) Allow group creations as some of my mates like mountain biking, kayaking, etc – so some will go out and carry out those activities, whilst others will just hike, etc.

    I could setup some Facebook style site – but I know that some of my mates aren’t up for joining Facebook. I also know that some of them won’t want to join the vB site I already have (and it’s not really geared towards this purpose in any case).

    I don’t really want to use vB, and feel that WordPress could offer a solution. I want to use WPRemix for the CMS side of what I’m trying to do (1 above). But then I want to use BuddyPress + WordPress MU + bbPress to achieve the discussion/social networking side (2 above).

    I did try and setup WordPress MU + BuddyPress + bbPress, and then added WPRemix and set that to the main site/blogs theme. I setup with subdomains for users, but basically that creates some weird outcomes:

    site.com > WPRemix theme.

    user.site.com > BuddyPress Home theme – but no widgets setup (I thought that that should have gone to either the user’s profile or the user’s blog?).

    And there were some strange authentication issues, I’m assuming cookie/domain related? I also want users to be able to use the BuddyPress theme only, not the WPRemix theme.

    Anyway, would I be better off creating two sites:

    site.com > WordPress 2.7 + WPRemix.

    my.site.com > WordPress MU + BuddyPress + bbPress with WordPress MU setup not to use subdomains (directories instead).

    Thoughts would be appreciated!

    Cheers,

    IB.

    I think the lesson here is don’t install WPMU in a subdirectory (in your case URL/blogs). If you think about it, without Buddypress plugins installed you already have the permalink URL/blogs going to your main install. Now, with the Buddypress plugins installed, you’ve duplicated that link because it too goes to “URL/blogs”. Do you see what I mean?

    I believe if you install WPMU in the root of your site the problem will go away. Alternately, try changing the name of your subdirectory to anything but “blogs” and you’ll probably be OK.

    Thx

    I have installed a forum on my buddypress install at http://ilovewestdavis.com.

    I have followed the instructions all the way to integrating this with buddypress. However, no matter who posts a reply to my forum topics, it shows up as me being the poster with my name and avatar beside each reply.

    Has anyone else seen this? You can see what I’m talking about at http://ilovewestdavis.com/groups/rooster-testing/forum/topic/6

    Is anyone successfully using Buddypress with Prologue theme?

    If so, how have you managed to integrate the plugin-template and plugin-sidebar files with the theme? Prologue has a weird way of calling the sidebar that I can’t seem to figure out and in my attempts to integrate with Buddypress the sidebar widgets fall under the member directory (like it can’t find the sidebar).

    So the above little blog to news function doesn’t work for me.

    I’m not using the trunk, just the most recent beta. Could that be the problem?

    The translation of BuddyPress to Dutch (nl_NL) is nearly done. We need some checks here and then it can be released. What is the next step to get it available here?

    Hi, I’ve created a short tag that I have added to buddypress-home/functions.php

    The function should enable me to add the shortcode [uname] in posts and pages and display the current user’s username. Unfortunately it doesn’t bloody work! Can anyone point me in the right direction?

    function displayusername() {
    global $current_user;
    return($current_user->user_login);
    }
    add_shortcode('uname', 'displayusername');

    I can’t say I’m much of a server guru, but what I have found I’ve documented here:

    Improving Performance

    I’d appreciate it if you’d add anything you find to that page for others to benefit from.

    Thanks for the comments guys….I just wanted to know if I was going to have any problems as the network grew. I am currently on a VPS with I think 1280 MB RAM. My install of buddypress never takes more than a half a second to run the queries so it sounds like I’m getting good times…though I just have a handful of beta testers right now.

    I may try the multi-db plugin, but it seems that the problems that I’ve been having over the last couple of days are due to my host and not my buddypress install…my sites have all been down for the last 4 hours.

    One last question for jedbarish or anyone else who wants to contribute…can you explain why it is best to run MySQL from a different server than the WPMU install?

    yeah, i did the troubleshooting to find the problem like you wanted burtadsit….and I know the issue, but I did not write Buddypress so I don’t know why the error is happening. Now that I know the EXACT issue I just need some help fixing the actual problem.

    Best way to operate a high traffic wpmu for buddypress by having two servers to run separate for mysql and wpmu/buddypress. I learned that Multi-DB 2.7 beta came out but only for WPMU 2.7 without Buddypress. It had some problem with Buddypress so they need to start from scratch for Buddypress. I wanted to know about HyperDB’s compatible using WPMU/Buddypress.

    Will it be enough for a dedicated server of 2GB RAM with 2x Processors for MYSQL only and 4x Processors with 8GB or 16GB RAM for WPMU/Buddypress?

    It would be nice for Andy or a guru here to give us an advice to have a start up for two servers or more to expand as much it grows later on. Thanks! Looking forward to the final release on Feb 12th.
