I have been a DreamHost customer for years, and generally a happy one. Back in April I upgraded to their DreamPress service, paying significantly more money each month in order to properly manage my self-hosted WordPress/BuddyPress web site. (I am always running with the most up-to-date version of both WordPress and BuddyPress/Commons-in-a-Box).

This has been completely in vain, as DreamPress gets it’s speed from Varnish, a front end cache that sits between your server and your visitors, and like pretty much every cache tool in the universe, if you’re a logged in user, you don’t get a cached page. Since forums and membership driven sites pretty much live by having users be logged in, you’re never going to get the same level of speed as other sites will on DreamPress.

This is actually a gross understatement. From the moment I did testing with only 1 member, it’s been abysmal. The response time on ANY page/link can range from 10-20 seconds, even with virtually all of the plug-ins disabled.

I’ve asked at DreamHost’s own support forums if there is ANY service they offer on which a BuddyPress installation of WordPress works (do I need to look at VPS? a dedicated server? someone other than DreamHost?) but to no avail. I have never received a reply on this, so it appears to be time to spend my money elsewhere.

There seem to be a lot of people that DO make BuddyPress work, and scalable. For those of you who are doing this successfully, where are you hosting your installation?

I would be very grateful for any advice folks might be able to offer so I can determine next steps.

This will hide fields on the profile edit page and on the register page.
You need to add the field IDs.
Put the function in bp-custom.php.

Hi @laynerogers

Rather than changing BP core files, you should contact the theme author asking that they look into making their page titles compatible with BP. The changes you’ve made to bp-core-filters.php will be lost each time you update BuddyPress.

I came across several threads dealing with this particular error, and they were all related to Elegant Themes (I was having it using Divi with Buddypress), and the only solution they came up with was replacing

<title><?php elegant_titles(); ?></title>

with

<title><?php wp_title(); ?></title>

in the header.php file.

That doesn’t entirely fix the problem, because your page titles still won’t display correctly. The problem is that Elegant Themes uses elegant_titles in place of wp_titles as a function for custom title displays for their theme(s). So the best solution (at least as far as I could figure out – not really a coder) was to go into the buddypress/bp-core/bp-core-filters.php file in the Buddypress plugin and edit this line:

add_filter( 'wp_title', 'bp_modify_page_title', 10, 3 );

to say

add_filter( 'elegant_titles', 'bp_modify_page_title', 10, 3 );

This fixes the call from the plugin so that it’s actually working with your theme, rather than having BP and WP communicate over your theme’s head. I’ve noticed quite a few people are having this particular issue, and while this fix worked for my theme (Divi), you may need to check your header.php to make sure that elegant_titles is the right function for your particular theme.

Gave it a try…

Had to Network Activate BuddyPress and the Blog Avatar plugin to use it, then all it did was show a mystery man avatar in the buddypress sites list. It showed the uploaded avatar on the Blog Avatar within the individual site, however only the mystery man avatar anywhere else?

Not really happy with having to network activate BuddyPress to use it as I don’t want individual blog admins messing with BuddyPress settings within their blogs/sites. So I set things back to the way it was and uninstalled it.

My original idea of controlling the site/blog avatar from the main site BuddyPress (just like the groups) is still a better option.

wpmudev.org claim they have a ‘AVATARS’ plugin [ https://premium.wpmudev.org/project/avatars/ ] that does what I am looking for, however paying $19 upfront and having to use their Dashboard plugin (that constantly pumps their propaganda into your admin panel) is not for me – yes been there done that.

Yes I went down the list, checking each time and none resolved this issue.

When Participants click on the forum topic, they get redirected to the new post submit form, and can also post. I deleted buddypress and reinstalled but I’m afraid whatever changed in the role is deep in the code.

Hello.
I’m about to make a website for my gaming clan. In this clan, different people have different privileges and therefore they should have access to restricted pages. Currently i have come around this issue, by password protection, but is there a way where i could integrate BuddyPress groups instead? So that when i for an example is logged in on BuddyPress, i have access to a restricted page? All not logged in users should have access to the rest of the website, but not the pages restricted pages.

Also, how do i rename the usergroups in both WordPress and BuddyPress? if you even can..

All help is appreciated 🙂

Topic: Email activation not working

I am using WordPress 4.1 and BuddyPress 2.1.1, the latest versions of both. I use hostinger.co.uk as my webhost. It has always been satisfactory, except the server resources are a bit limited. However, the email activation functions are not working. Emails are not being sent to new registrations, so people cannot activate their accounts themselves, and I have to manually go in and activate it for them. This is very distracting and time consuming, especially when I have to wade through dozens of span accounts to find one legit user. My guess is that it is because of my webhost, but I am not sure how to resolve the issue. Any help would be great.

Greetings,

I’m using BuddyPress Docs and I’m trying to figure out if it’s possible to filter documents using multiple tags. Out of the box, users can search using either a keyword, or by selecting one of the currently available tags. When selecting tags, the constructed url looks something like this:

…/docs/?bpd_tag=quiz

When selecting another tag, it just replaces the bpd_tag parameter instead of appending it and filtering the selection even further. Another BuddyPress plugin, BP Profile Search, achieves the function I’m looking for… searching for entries that have both tags “friend” and “colleague”, for example.

I’ve searched around and can’t find much… anybody tried this?

I figured out that in my case this was because I forgot to remove buddypress subfolder from my theme folder located in wp-content/themes/YOUR_THEME/

So I guess it was just loading some page out of it.

Anyhow, is there a general answer on how does BP technically track user’s activity, e.g. where can you see the code which tells something in BP that the user did some action?

I’m not tech guy and it’s my 2nd day with BP, so don’t blame me please.

Hi, love the way the activity stream is working for new blog posts and comments on new blog posts but I don’t seem to get an activity update for either:

1. comments on old blog posts (i.e. blog posts created prior to activating the buddypress activity tracker

2. likes

is this as designed?

Have you added a bp translation manually to another folder ? If yes, delete it.

If you use WP since a while and updated it recently, search a line containing define(‘WPLANG’, ‘xx_XX’)- xx_XX is a lang iso code, in wp-config.php. If you find one, delete it as it is no more used in WP 4.1

Control via FTP that bp translation is in wp-content/languages/plugins/buddypress-fr_FR.mo
If not there, ensure that /language/ and /plugins/ have their write access set to 755
The mo file should be 644.

Hi!

I’m creating my own theme and am trying to find an answer to probably one of the silliest questions you’d ever heard.

I figured out that once I use my theme, BuddyPress doesn’t track user activity, e.g. activity list is not updated, the registred (and active) users are not shown in Members, etc.

Any ideas on what have I missed? I googled, checked the documentation, the codex, etc.

thank you. I still have a problem with buddypress. When i go to activity stream, i cant comment or reply, until i click on all memebers.Why? Also when you click on activity stream, a message comes out saying there are no activities, until i click all members.

Hi there, I am using wordpress 4.1 and buddypress 2.1.1

I have searched the forums and have found only extremely old posts on this topic with no apparent solution.

Is there a way to filter searches based on user profile fields? For example, search based on the custom profile field: “location”? so that my users could see all other users that are in a certain city?

Or a plugin that would do this?

Any clues would be greatly appreciate,

Please I have installed Buddypress and BBpress. Everything is working fine except for my comment button… Each time i click on the comment button it scrolls up and thats it, i can’t comment or do anything. Here are my details

I am using Buddypress 2.1.1 and WordPress 4.1 with the Plugin Blog Categories for groups. Is there any plugin or other possibility to see the Blog-posts in the Activity-stream? I was searching a while but didn’t find any answer.
