In reply to: [Resolved] can't activate bbPress 2.3

ParticipantCould have been any (or all) of the following plugins:
BP Group Documents (ancient, don’t think I can find it online again)
BP Unread Posts https://wordpress.org/plugins/bp-unread-posts/ (also obsolete)
U BuddyPress Forum Attachment http://urlless.com/u-buddypress-forum-attachment/
I haven’t reactivated any of these 3 and am about to delete them.It appears a case of too eager to upgrade without properly checking existing potential conflicts. Too much haste and not enough care in my excitement about 1.7 – my bad. Thanks for your support Paul.

Participant@patricksaad,
apologize if i mentionned your blog, but it was the only place i found speaking about this problem.
FYI, “throttling” is used in BP 1.7.2, but a minima. Should be extanded much more. I guess it’s preferably you open an ehancement ticket on the Trac.

Participant@mercime Hi! Thanks for the link and the advice! It is certainly appreciated. I have been using WordPress now for about 2 years…but I’m no expert by any means, but in the last 2 years I’ve really learned a lot and I really enjoy working with WordPress. I’m sure that BuddyPress and bbpress will be just as challenging and just as much fun to learn.
As I was telling @ubernaut, the site we are going to be adding the forum and networking to has a lot of users that are very passionate about their interests. They are already very active in conversations so I believe the forum will be a welcome addition to the site. I will definitely want to activate the group forums as the site is already broken up into some groups just through association.
I am thankful that you guys are out here! LOL After looking at the link you sent me and looking over the bbpress documentation, I have a feeling that this might be a little bit of a challenge. But, I am up for it and I’m sure with all the expert help here, I’ll be just fine.
Thank you all for your help and encouragement! I’ll be sure to let you know how everything turns out and send a link to the site.

ParticipantThe Genesis version is v1.9.2. The Genesis Connect plugin is free now. I did have it installed before but it did nothing so I went to the BP Compatibility pack instead. The Genesis Connect plug only seems to auto-styles a set of Genesis Templates. This is not one of their templates. It is a custom theme based on their framework and this set does not include the sample child that I began with.
That being said, I went through the hoops of disabling and removing the bp template compatibility pack and activating the Genesis Connect plugin. Aside from styling issues, there wasn’t even a button available to request friendship under those conditions. I’ve gone back to the BP Compatibility Pack. Genesis Plugins only work with standard Genesis offerings and the support in their forum will be of no assistance to me on a custom theme.
I activated TwentyTwelve theme. I cannot cancel the friendship request nor can I accept it.
From where I am sitting, this does not appear to be a missing plugin issue nor a Genesis issue. It is a core Buddypress problem that has been reported and those threads were closed with no real resolution.
The BP Compatibility pack is there for all other themes. My theme is only based on the Genesis Framework so it falls into that category.
Any more ideas?

ParticipantBuddypress compatibility: v1.2.1
@marjwyatt Saw the source code and you’re using the BP Template Pack plugin which should no longer be used with BP 1.7 as it can interfere with new default Theme Compatibility with most WP themes.Theme base: Genesis with Custom Theme
Having mentioned BP’s default Theme Compat in BP 1.7, Please confirm with Genesis theme dev/support whether you still need to purchase Genesis Connect plugin as Genesis themes pre-BP 1.7 required Genesis Connect plugin to make Genesis compatible with BuddyPress.
Issues you have been posting in these forums may be caused by the compatibility process with BP Template Pack and/or needing Genesis Connect. You can change to Twenty Twelve theme and will find that the theme is compatible with BuddyPress as is. So do follow up with your theme support to find resolutions to issues posted.

ParticipantAnd I notice that the pages for forums and registration donβt work.
Did you enable Registration in Settings > General? If you did, did you check Settings > BuddyPress > Pages to see if a page for Registration is associated with the Registration dropdown and saved?
I donβt understand the bbpress thing. Am I supposed to have that too if I want forums? Does BuddyPress not have forums built within?
BP no longer has internal bbPress group forums built in. For current version, you need to install and activate the bbPress forums plugin for sitewide and/or group forums. https://codex.buddypress.org/user/setting-up-a-new-installation/installing-group-and-sitewide-forums/

Participantideally, of course, when people comment within the activity stream, they would not have to “leave” the activity stream to participate at a website.
ideally:
user makes a comment on the activity stream and that comment also shows up at the blog post as a comment
and
user comments at the blog post/page — and of course the activity stream is updated, because the user commented on the contentis such a set-up possible — where the activity stream is more functional?
otherwise — it’s kind of a post stream — but if two different sets of comments are generated then the functionality is unusable.
if the “out the box” BP functionality is unusable/counter-intuitive — then of course i need to “disable activity stream commenting on blog and forum posts,” but actually — by how that sounds — that’s exactly what i want to “enable,” because i want visitors to be able to post within the activity stream — and on the blog and forum posts — and have the comment stream under the “original post” be the same (since it is about the same content).
i’m using “a lot of words” to describe something quite simple, but maybe you can sort through the verbiage and see what i mean.
Same Content
Same Comments
Regardless of Whether on a Page/Post or within the Activity StreamLogical, Simple, Functional, Intuitive.

Participantbetter to install bbpress using FTP. I can do it either way, but Iβd prefer to do it through BuddyPress
@ldjautobody Recommend that you install BuddyPress first. That way, after you install bbPress plugin via Plugins > Add New, you can activate BP group forums (if you want) in Settings > Forums . https://codex.buddypress.org/user/setting-up-a-new-installation/installing-group-and-sitewide-forums/May 23, 2013 at 4:05 pm #164624In reply to: Difference between Buddy Press and BBpress? ParticipantThanks again @ubernaut. I think I read something similar awhile back stating that is was better to install bbpress using FTP. I can do it either way, but I’d prefer to do it through BuddyPress so I’ll try that first and see what happens. We’ve backed everything on the site up, so if something goes “awry”…we’ll be ready for it! LOL
I appreciate all your help and I’ll be sure to post here to let you know how it goes! Looking forward to getting up and running and seeing if we can get some of our regular blog commentors to register in the forum and networking areas. This is kind of an experiment for us at this point.
It will be interesting to see what kind of reaction we get here. It appears that most of our registered users are pretty computer friendly…something that’s not always true in the auto industry! LOL Lots of really good technicians out there that can’t answer an email due to lack of computer skills…so I’m hoping that we don’t come up a “bust” merely due to that. But, only time will tell…so, in an effort to waste a little less of “that”…I’ll get started and see what we can accomplish!
Thanks again for the help and we’ll be in touch!

ParticipantOne more question! Sorry! It was an “afterthought”! LOL
Is there ANY order in which to install BuddyPress and bbpress? In other words, should we install one before the other? Right now, we have neither one installed and need both social networking AND forum capabilities.Again, thanks in advance for any help. This site and the support forums are great. Don’t know what we’d do without it. π

Participantbbpress only handles the forum aspects of your site, so if you only want forums but none of the other social network components there’s no need to install buddypress at all. Likewise if you do not want a forum but you still want the other stuff then bbpress is not required. Obviously if you want everything then you want both.

Participant@hiboy just to be clear, did you upgrade from previous BuddyPress version with the old group forum installed OR is this a new install on WP 3.5.1 and BP 1.7.2? If this is a new install, then just go to admin dashboard menu Settings > Forums and go to the bottom of that page and uncheck “Enable Group Forums”

ParticipantWhat exactly do you want to change in how bbPress plugin generates the url of your forums, i.e., from what to what? Some changes are not that hard to do and some changes might require you to hire a developer.
