In reply to: bbPress 2.1 and BuddyPress 1.6 beta 2 Group Forums

ParticipantI am building a fresh BuddyPress site and am still at the testing phase. I have the luxury of blowing it out and starting all over. I have tried probably 20+ combinations of BuddyPress 1.5.6, BuddyPress 1.6 RC-1, “BuddyPress Ready” themes, standard themes + template pack, bbPress lite set up via BP install as group forums, bbPress 2.1 set up as sitewide forums during the BuddyPress install, and bbPress 2.1 set up as BP group forums but not through the BP setup.. Whew… This makes my head hurt

My current, and I hope final combination:
WordPress 3.4.1
BuddyPress 1.6 RC-1
Genesis Framework + BuddyPress Theme Pack *
bbPress 2.1 Installed after the BuddyPress Install and set up to support BP group forums*(I tried their GenesisConnect plugin, but get closer to right by using the BuddyPress Theme Pack
All is well except I need the group forums to go full width (no sidebar). If I could tweak some code and make the sidebar for group forums go away I would be a happy camper.
Thanks in advance for any help on this!

ParticipantThanks @djPaul
I also read another recent thread: https://buddypress.org/community/groups/how-to-and-troubleshooting/forum/topic/bbpress-2-1-and-buddypress-1-6-beta-2/?#post-134036 and commented there. It seems likely that there are a few bugs to be sorted out to get this working.
A particular thing I had missed that might help someone else to get bbP2.1 forums working a bit at least with BP1.6RC1 is that, as well as diabling BP Group Fourms I had untick “Discussion Forums” in WP-admin> settings> buddypress> components (which I find counter-intuitive).

ParticipantThanks for your comments here @jeaz, @newpress and @PaulGibbs They really helped me out and confirmed that I wasn’t just being really stupid! Yes, I concur with you, I’m getting the same issues you raise above with WP 3.4.1, bbPress2.1 and BP1.6RC1
It’s looking like the new forums will be excellent and useful, so many thanks to all the developers. But at the moment the forum admin between BP and bbP has a some limiting bugs and is also confusing to me. I’d like to help out by testing but, for me at least, I feel that it is best to wait until the developers have another crack at the integration first.

That might just work out perfectly, however I do have a further gui integration question for you.
With a simple WP page you have a menu bar with items on it (pages, catagories, etc) Of course those can also have sub entries below them when you mouse over them.
If I go with a multisite i be able to have a menu entry on the main site thats, lets say; ‘Buddypress’ (for lack of a better example, and then on mouseover have drop down items for ‘groups’ ‘forum’ ‘activity’ ‘friends’ etc. and clicking them takes them to the appropiate spot on the subsite?
I’ve never seen a menu item that links to a page on a subsite. If this can be done, and I can find a coding example then that’ll work perfectly for my needs.
Thanks for your input, I’ll make sure to read up on those links tomorrow.edit: i just glanced through those pages and I have alot to read, are you aware of anyway to integrate stats across a network of WP sites onto the main one visable in the main dashboard?

KeymasterIf this is pure bbPress question, you’re best to ask on bbpress.org, as that where those experts are. Or do you mean that you think BuddyPress is affecting bbPress’ log in process?

ParticipantDo you mean something like the walled garden technique?
I use (bp version 1.5.6 ): https://buddypress.org/community/groups/how-to-and-troubleshooting/forum/topic/code-snippet-make-site-privet-parse-error/#post-130982
Then I use the following to hide feeds from logged out users
`
function bp_remove_feeds() {
remove_action( ‘bp_actions’, ‘bp_activity_action_sitewide_feed’, 3 );
remove_action( ‘bp_actions’, ‘bp_activity_action_personal_feed’, 3 );
remove_action( ‘bp_actions’, ‘bp_activity_action_friends_feed’, 3 );
remove_action( ‘bp_actions’, ‘bp_activity_action_my_groups_feed’, 3 );
remove_action( ‘bp_actions’, ‘bp_activity_action_mentions_feed’, 3 );
remove_action( ‘bp_actions’, ‘bp_activity_action_favorites_feed’, 3 );
remove_action( ‘groups_action_group_feed’, ‘groups_action_group_feed’, 3 );
}
add_action(‘init’, ‘bp_remove_feeds’);

ParticipantIt’s not quite the same thing but with bp version 1.5.6, I use the following in bp-custom.php:
// see: https://buddypress.org/community/groups/how-to-and-troubleshooting/forum/topic/1-5-group-avatars-using-mystery-man-default#post-109448 function my_avatar_defaults() { global $bp; // change 'identicon' to anything listed here: // http://en.gravatar.com/site/implement/images/#default-image $bp->grav_default->group = 'identicon'; $bp->grav_default->user = 'monsterid'; } add_action( 'bp_init', 'my_avatar_defaults' );July 26, 2012 at 8:33 pm #138010Toby Cryns (@themightymo)
Participant@mercime – We are using group forums. We are, however, rewriting the urls using the forum slug constant in wp-config.php.
It is weird, because this is only happening on our DEV environment. It seems to be working fine on LIVE.
Any other thoughts? Possible avenues to explore?

@mercime
Participant@dreamlarp basic troubleshooting is changing to bp-default theme. I suggest that you double-check that all the BP components are in working order using bp-default theme before installing/activating a third-party theme.
Could also be a plugin issue, one that has not been updated for latest BP version. There are a variety of factors which could trip up a smooth installation. First thing is change to bp-default theme and work from there.

Participant@beggers best place to ask is at the WordPress.org forums and to search plugins there. There was a plugin that “bridged” the two (WP/phpBB) way back.
Right now I see the following
– https://wordpress.org/extend/plugins/phpbb-single-sign-on/
– https://wordpress.org/extend/plugins/phpbb-recent-topics/

Participant@12sp This is an issue you should bring to your theme developer’s forums. As far as I know, if you’re using Suffusion theme with BuddyPress, you also need to install a plugin https://wordpress.org/extend/plugins/suffusion-buddypress-pack/
July 26, 2012 at 5:01 pm #137996@mercime
ParticipantStrange. What about regular members? Can they see forums page?
Also, since you’re not using Group Forums, disable Discussion Forums in menu BuddyPress > Components. Go back to your sitewide forums page and check if it’s working properly.

MemberThanks @joelshakespear
Where is `BP Mass Messaging` ? Is it an Admin option? Is it a plugin?
If it is the plugin, I already tried it and it does not work. I got:
`You do not have sufficient permissions to access this page.`
Note, I am the WP Admin.Plus I don’t think it is supported by the developer any longer. I posted to their forum site and s/he did not respond.
P.S. we have our own servers and host the site internally so the email blast to our 250 members will not be an issue.

MemberThanks mo, you gave me the right concept needed. I tried setting the write permission to 777 and it still did not work. If that’s the case, then the GD Library must be the issue. I found this post https://buddypress.org/community/groups/how-to-and-troubleshooting/forum/topic/avatar-problem-upload-and-crop-works-but-not-showing-image/. I immediately called my host company and once GD Library was upgraded… that was it! I can now upload avatars. My buddypress site is now ready with avatar upload. Thanks! CASE RESOLVED.

Participant@idanny08 Based on the HTML structure of your theme, you will only need to create two new files, header-buddypress.php and sidebar-buddypress.php to make the BP templates compatible with your theme.
If you’ve revised any of the BP template files transferred to your wisdom of life theme folder in server during the BP Compatibility process, please delete the 6 BP folders transferred to your theme folder in server – /activity, /blogs, /forums, /members, /groups, /register – then re-run Appearance > BP Compatibility again to make sure that you have clean template files.
A. COPY your theme’s header.php and Save As > header-buddypress.php
Open up header-buddypress.php and at the BOTTOM of the file, below other code contained within, add the code from http://pastebin.com/pTiuAruq
Save file.
B. CREATE A NEW BLANK FILE named sidebar-buddypress.php
Open up the blank sidebar-buddypress.php file and add the code from http://pastebin.com/1FyKJ5eK
Save file.
C. Upload header-buddypress.php and sidebar-buddypress.php to your theme folder in server wp-content/themes/wisdom-of-life/ in the same directory where your regular header.php and sidebar.php files are
D. Copy the style modifications for some BP elements https://codex.buddypress.org/theme-development/theme-dev-bp-template-pack-walkthrough-twenty-ten-bp-1-5/3/ and paste those at the bottom of your theme’s stylesheet, then adjust to taste.
Final note: not sure whether the breadcrumbs or theme options will work in the BP pages.

Participant@dreamlarp BP Docs shouldn’t affect the forums at all. If you change to bp-default theme, can you see your posts.

ParticipantThanks @Paul Gibbs. I’ve imported my old group forums/topics into bbP2 like you suggested above and the import bit seems to work OK – they appear in the bbP forum list and can be read from there.
But when I create a new BP group forum (via group admin front end) or add a new topic to a BP group forum, nothing shows up in the bbP forum listing (as I assume it should do – am I right?). Similarly, when I add a topic to the bbP forum for a particular BP group, it doesn’t show up in the BP group forum accessed from the BP group page. So BP group forums and bbP forums are still acting completely independently of each other and not integrated at all.
Perhaps it is a bug? What would you advise? Has anyone else achieved proper integration?
(Note that I did disable the Groups Forum component inside the BuddyPress components setting page in wp-admin as you said above.)
