In reply to: Confusing about groups and forums
Roger Coathup
ParticipantHi Jeroen,
we’ve built a lot of sites on BuddyPress – and forums are often a big issue for our clients.
Clients / users expect forums to behave like normal forums (as your users have already indicated as well). Unfortunately, the BuddyPress group forum approach just doesn’t work in this regard.
If forums are crucial to your site – then yes, install the bbPress plugin alongside BuddyPress, and work with the standalone forums it provides.
You’ll need to implement some logic to control accessibility / visibility to certain restricted forums – but that’s not difficult – you can either use the BuddyPress Groups to group your guild officers, and then use the BuddyPress API to test whether a member is in that group. Or, if you don’t require the other group functionality, you may be best to create a new user role with the standard WordPress API.
If you want to see a couple of examples of bbPress providing standalone forums on a BuddyPress site, you can check out our builds for http://worshipministry.com and http://enterprisenation.com
Hope that helps, Roger

MemberHi, Thanks for the reply. What do I need to look at on ‘https://wordpress.org/support/forum/how-to-and-troubleshooting’ ? Do I search for broken Permalinks? What problem do I have with my Permalinks? Thank you for your asitstance. I have re-isntalled a new WP site but have not yet isntalled BuddyPress. What do I need to do first?

ParticipantIf you are not tech savvy, it sounds like you would be best to hire a developer to do this development work.
It would also be helpful if you posted full information on here – like the theme you are trying to modify – I notice you have asked the same question on the Frisco theme forums

Participant== Should I install both? ==
@giovanniw650 No need.
Install only what you want/need – in this case, group forums.== Or maybe its just not compatible with my Theme. ==

@mercime
Participant@patrickhitches you can use your theme’s full width page layout if you have one for your forums.
As for layout, looks like there’s a conflict with your theme’s table styles with that of the bbPress forums styles. In upcoming BP 1.6/bbPress 2.1, you can opt for the default “table-less” layout in forums settings..
Use/install Firebug with Firefox to ID and change the styles of respective widths of forum elements

Jaja..
MemberIt’s still local on my computer running on MAMP, fresh install, one blog post, one comment, 2 members, one group and one forum topic.
I will try tomorrow on a Live server maybe that works better. I’m very new with BuddyPress just before building an entire site on top of it i would like to know if i can get the same speeds and stability as WP is giving me.
Else i’m maybe doing a lot of work while it’s useless.June 29, 2012 at 9:33 pm #136590In reply to: e-mail users plugin, e-mail users2

ParticipantNot sure this what this question has to do with BuddyPress – is there a reason why you haven’t asked it on the wordpress.org forums for the plugins?

@bobscott the permalinks have not been fixed. Deactivate BuddyPress and change to Twenty Eleven theme, then resolve the permalinks issue on your Windows server at https://wordpress.org/support/forum/how-to-and-troubleshooting

MemberThanks for the response Paul. I went ahead and created a test group with the group forums option selected as you recommended. I can see the forum option under the group as well. However when I attempt to create a new topic, I get the error, “There was an error when creating the topic” displayed in a red box (what looks like a styled div).
From that screen, I clicked the forum directory option where I can create a new topic, but now have the added option of a drop down box featuring all groups where forums were enabled. Problem is, no matter what group forum I highlight, I can’t seem to successfully create a topic.
Suggestions?

Member@modernlooper — I just searched this support forum for “remove links in profile fields” and got very strange and non-related results. So I still don’t know how to fix the glitch.

KeymasterIf you’ve done the ‘install group forums’ button in the backend.. create a new group with forum enabled. This should trigger the db install routine.

ParticipantGroups forums do work in bp multisite using bp-multi-network and a plugin like say Networks + .
You can post to a group forum from the main forum directory or you can go to a group and post a new topic in the group forum
But I’m afraid its way over my head as to how or as to how to fix for @coreymj78
June 28, 2012 at 3:40 pm #136526Paul Wong-Gibbs
KeymasterOnly way is to set up a multi-network WordPress site (not multi-site). Google, and/or look at http://wpmututorials.com/news/new-features/multiple-buddypress-social-networks/ for more information.
It’s still pretty new, so mightn’t be bullet proof.
June 28, 2012 at 3:38 pm #136524In reply to: Forum and Registration tab not showing
Paul Wong-Gibbs
KeymasterYou need to complete set up of the (group) forum component in wp-admin – BuddyPress > Forums Setup.
The registration component or page is visible if you enable user registration in WordPress (Settings > General).

Do it on the forums, no notification.

KeymasterIt’s possible that group forums don’t work multi-network. I’ve never tried it.

ParticipantI have another problem. Everything is now fine. All pages are responsive and the layouts are fine.
But my forums look unattractive. The sub forum menus are fine and the topics are fine but the main forum menu looks terrible. http://www.caiminds.com/forums
Any suggestions?
