Participanthttp://testbp.org/forums is the better place to look instead of http://testbp.org/bbpress/
Just enable forums component in BuddyPress. Bugle Notes is using the default theme for BP (with some CSS tweaks). If you download BuddyPress 1.1.3 and use the default theme provided with the download, your forum will look the same.
Testbp.org is using a new theme created for BP 1.2 (not yet released yet).

Participant@mariusooms Now that was a response I can truly appreciate, and I do. I definitely see merit in both approaches and I am putting thought into an approach that satisfies my userbase’s needs. I don’t see any way around the problem you so eloquently laid out. Perhaps what we need is not so much a blog for groups, but a post-like-entry/edit mechanism to create content that is clearly part of the /group structure, lives inside that structure, has privacy and permissions consistent with that structure but gives users the opportunity to create content that falls into this category: more than a forum topic or posting, more than a wire posting -> sort of a “thought piece that has been traditionally the domain of blog posts ie with images, etc. that people then lend commentary to.
I need to figure out what vehicle/mechanism best lends itself to that structure. I’ll keep you up on what I discover, if anything.

ParticipantYes, what is this “proprietary component”? Or is that information proprietary? LOL. I assume it centres around collaboration and / or document management perhaps?
Haha!
Yes, can I sound anymore stuck up than throwing around the term proprietary on an Open Source software forum.
To answer your third question first, yes.
As to your first two questions, I can only give you the most nebulous of details at this time. The component I’m working on is very specific to the site. It will be the primary collaboration and project management engine. So, it will not be something I will make available to the community. Besides, with the exception of using this component to become a direct competitor, it will not have any value to anyone else.

ParticipantYou just need another theme for BP activated on the BP blog. That’s the terminology you’re looking for.

Participantyou should all check out the bleeding edge trunk 2161. It’s pretty stable and likely addresses all your SWA filtering and grouping needs, with the ability to be tweaked further.
SWA customization really boils down to the ability for a user to choose any combination of “who’s” and “what’s” which is what 1.2 does exactly. so, for ex. you can combine My Friends (who) and Forum Posts Only (what) You can create custom “who”s eg a particular group and add that button or combinations of “what’s’ if it suits your site’s m.o. Combine this with 1.2’s inline commenting and people will never leave your home page

You can see an example on my dev site -> http://mjpratt.com

ParticipantNot posting another topic as this one is still not resolved.
I am running WPMU 2.8.6 + BP 1.1.2. I just installed BP-FBconnect and set up the api and secret keys.
The button is showing up fine however, when clicked it opens a new window and shows the following error:
[app name].. is under construction. Please try again later.
Similar to what the above posters had months ago.
Searched the forums and google but havent found a solution yet. Please help.

ParticipantHi Bowe,
you are right.
I am beginning to like the Forum, also came to the conclusion that I really do need the forum for the website I am trying to create.
Also, looking at http://www.bbpress.org , it seems Matt is going to push development of the Forum-software to the next step, which is a great initiative.

Ah…sorry to spam you somewhat but I was also wondering if there were any plans to enable easy “quoting” within the forums with this theme/BP version (or a future theme/etc). We’ve finally convinced ourselves that flat forums are good but I think we’re definitely going to have to get some sort of quoting mechanism working.
edit:
I’ve just seen this post: http://testbp.org/groups/buddypress-testers-614548248//forum/topic/forum-or-wire-with-comments/
Hopefully I’ll be able to get that sorted as a plugin sometime soon.

Participant@xevo – can you point me to where they mention wpmu support for shoppe?
I purchased the plugin a few months back, and got in quite a heated argument with them over wpmu support. It is ‘inferred’ in the forums that wpmu is supported, but when push comes to shove, they say it does not. Basically they told me to kiss their butt when I asked for a refund. I have not been back since.
I have to say that their support and customer service is some of the worst I have ever come across. I would never, ever give them another dime, nor would I ever suggest their product to anyone. Obviously your experience with them was different.
Believe me, it takes a lot to get me going, have to push a ton of buttons, before I get angry over something so petty. They just managed to find all my buttons at once.

Participant@Tore.. true.. but IF you are running a big community (and that’s what I am aiming for) forums are a really good addition because the activity stream get’s VERY busy.. And we all know it’s much easier to disable something then add it in, so I think more options for interaction are a good thing! It’s just a matter of tweaking BP to make it fit your community, the tools are there!

ParticipantI agree that it’s a big step forward from a usability point of view. The two column side navigation confuses everyone at first (and second) glance. And constancy is critical in user interface design. Floating the admin bar is a great usability idea too. And the “New Post” and “New Group” buttons on those directory pages is absolutely brilliant. That’s a huge leap in usability. People are always very confused with the current Forums directory page. So that’s all great! Very good work.
What I’m really missing though is all the beautiful little details from the previous design. Those ‘speech bubble’ arrows on the title backgrounds (although they were somewhat overused). The nice gradients on the title backgrounds. The beautiful (and useful) little icons in the navigation. The beautiful rounded buttons with their little arrows, icons, checkmarks and busy cursors. And just the overall brand feel of the yellow orange and grey. It really was (and still is) a beautiful design. But generic makes more sense for a default theme. Like the Kubrik theme for WordPress. And easier theme development is always good. I also recognize the the new theme is a work in progress.

ParticipantWIth the new theme for 1.2 I think that the forums are very secondary to the “what’s new”-box for the personal profile and groups.
If “what’s new”-messages in the activty feed at the frontpage and groups would appear at the top of the list when commented, there’d be no use of the forums at all.
If you’d be able to tinyMCE or attach files to the “what new”-input you’d be another step away from having the forum component.
I guess BP is made for thousands of users. But those of us having about 1000 registered users at the very most (and about 1/5 active of them) will have to make lesser avenues for the users (no blogs, no forums, only personal and groups “whats new”/status update) so that the activity isn’t diluted.

ParticipantThe best possible option right now is using JJJ’s BP Member filter:
https://buddypress.org/forums/topic/bp-member-filter
That way you can let your users filter users by name or profile field. This way if you search for “Tom” in the field First Name, you will get correct results.
Since JJJ is working on improving this plugin, I think it’s meant to become a core functionality in the near future. Until that time comes, I think this is a pretty good alternative for solving your problems Mike
