ParticipantI do realize that the project is huge that’s why we estimate at least 5 years for completion. The youtube phrase was just an example. We’re not using any phrase that is already in use.
The tuts plus network is similar of what we’re doing but, it’s going to be a little different for us! I never even heard of tuts plus network until now. I plan to browse around their sites and see what they’re about. Also I thank everyone who posted something in this forum

ParticipantHello all,
My setup:
1. I’ve upgraded last week my MU from 2.8.5 to 2.8.6.
2. Buddypress is version 1.1.2.
I have a similar issue with user slugs that have a blank space converted to a dash in them.
For example, this does not work:
http://centres-sociaux.fr/members/dominique-garet/
When I activate the compability mode, the new slug doesn’t work either:
http://centres-sociaux.fr/members/dominique garet/
Yet, with or without compability mode, alpha character slugs work just fine, like this:
http://centres-sociaux.fr/members/kgjerstad/
I also changed the user_nicename in wp_users to see if that had any effect, but it also failed to fix the issue:
http://centres-sociaux.fr/members/dgaret/
Any tips, or hints, would be greatly appreciated.
PS. This is my first posting in the forums, so I take the opportunity to show my appreciation to this lively community and to the great features BP offers. Longlive the Open source communities!

ParticipantI believe with the new activity-stream coming up, there would be a very new and very interactive approach for posting into forum-topics… The question is, if it is possible (and if Andy wants to do this) that activity-comments are also forum comments/answers (or in other cases blog-article-comments etc). See this thread about activity-streams for more info:

Ps: And leave your thoughts/feedback

Participantyeah, the “Forum” / “Forums” and posting is very confusing. I guess this way the Forums will be under-utilized by users, although a Discussion-Forum is one of the most important features for a Social-Networking website.
When you come to the point of having the need to explain the average user how your website works, then the website is crap and will never get any users signing-up. I saw many BP-websites which have videos in order to explain the use of the website.
Keep things as simple as possible, so that a user will understand how to navigate your website without having the need of watching 5 videos at which you explain how to navigate.
I would suggest to re-design the Forums-page in order to make it easier for users to understand how Group-Forums work and also make the posting-process a lot easier.
see this:
https://trac.buddypress.org/attachment/ticket/1389/sketch_2.gif
from the concept a little similar to this:

ParticipantI’m intrigued by the linking of forums to groups. But I think the main issue is whether people will understand without instruction. I know I didn’t get it at first. Right now you can click Forums in 2 ways, one through the main link and one through the group link. Both do different things, meaning that what happens when you click Forums (same word, different locations) depends on what “mode” you’re in (group or non-group). Confusing.
Maybe on the forum page a button for posting a new topic could lead them through the group finding/creation process?
Gotta say, though. BuddyPress is really pretty.

ParticipantI guess I understand now what you are saying (@Michael, @Tore):
– when I make my comment to a Forum-Post, then my comment is showing-up at the “Home-page” and also within “My Activities”, but my comment is currently NOT showing-up within the specific Topic at the Group-Forum.
I do agree: All comments being made to a Forum-Topic, should be also made visible within this Group-Forum.
Also, I would suggest a re-design of the “Forums”-page:
https://trac.buddypress.org/ticket/1389
https://trac.buddypress.org/attachment/ticket/1389/sketch_2.gif
this would make the “Forums”-page much more interesting for users and an easy understanding of how the “Group-Forums” are working.
see a similar example here:

Participant“2. In the test-group: http://testbp.org/groups/buddypress-testers-614548248 there are interesting discussions. One is about “feeding back” the comments to the original source (Blog-Post, etc) and one about the topic if the forums still make sense with that kind of activity-stream. Check it out and get involved in the discussion here – I think those are very important topics!
My answer is: As simple as possible for the end-user. Merge as much as you can!”
I’d also like to see merging. If not, there will be comments to forumposts that are lost in the clutter of comments everywhere.

ParticipantNow that I tested it a little some thoughts (constructive I hope):
1. In the sitewide activity it doesn’t show a comment, when it’s belonging to an older entry… I think it would be cool, if it would show up on top, no matter how old the original entry was, because with the comment, it’s getting “New” again (hope you are getting what I mean with my english…)
2. In the test-group: http://testbp.org/groups/buddypress-testers-614548248 there are interesting discussions. An idea I posted in the group about the forum etc would be: Finding the topic and tagging would be the only benefit for forums. What if forums are topically organized with the overview and everything, but the answers would be the comments in the activity stream…?!
I guess technically (in the background) it would “measure” if it is a forum-post, blog-post or just a status-message your commenting to in the activity and handle all of it differently… (maybe that is very complicated, but would be great!)”
3. It really would be a loss, if there isn’t an option in the group anymore, to send a message to all members of the group… Right now I don’t see it anymore…

superbloggernl
ParticipantTEMPORARY WORKAROUND if you must change a user’s avatar (phew) :
– find user-dir in wp-content/blogs.dir/1/files/avatars
– change ownership of dir (it could be owned by apache)
– create a 50×50 image file ending in -bpthumb.xxx
– create a 150×150 image file ending in -bpfull.xxx
– upload the files , done …
we verified this procedure with 2 of our pre-BP users and updated their avatar this way. All post-BP install users have had no problems as far as we can see.
need more help ? http://superblogger.nl (it’s dutch but you can post in english on the forums), or wait a while until we revisit here.

ParticipantIn the end I think it’s a fairly intriguing idea, linking groups to the forum categories. I’ve never seen forums done in such a way. Perhaps there is a lot of potential benefits from this, because I know that in many social networks, Groups are often quite useless. Maybe this structure you have in place helps change that.

ParticipantGood point Andy, to which I have two replies.
One, is that I do not prefer to navigate to categories to post.
Two, is that the UI regarding Forum categories in the integrated bbpress install, and the stand-alone are definitely different. Personally I prefer the stand-alone because at least then the categories are in a list and don’t require avatars.

KeymasterSome work needs to be done on the UI for group forums, I’m considering ways to include a “New Topic” button. On a side note – how did you post this forum topic? You had to first visit a sub forum and then post. It is the same, visit a group, then post.

Participantdoes the vBulletin integration to WordPress could work with Buddy“DOES NOT and WILL NEVER support WordPress MU”
I’m not farmiliar with vBulletin, but if your sure 90% of Buddypress will be useless, why not totally use vBulletin (not that I agree with you that buddypress is only good because of it’s groups and forum)?

Use TheEasyButton’s most recent tutorial:

ParticipantThanks Xevo.
I tried your process, but it just doesn’t seem to work for me. I’ll give it another shot this evening, but think there might be a few more steps (details) to your instructions, that I’m overlooking.

Participantwhen you mean by buddypress tagged function, does that mean like the pages that list, blogs/members/forums/etc ?
Would you mind helping me set this up if I pay ya? looking for some guidance of finishing up my main site
My email is admin@thecleanpost.com , thanks!
November 26, 2009 at 6:14 pm #57539Xevo
ParticipantDone that, been there. Works brilliantly.
1. Install WPMU.
2. Install Buddypress.
3. Change your keys in wp-config.php.
4. Install bbPress with intergrated settings (make sure you use the new keys you made). Make sure you install it in /forums and not in /forum because buddypress will nicely redirect his own /forums to your newly made bbPress install.
5. When everything works good, use this plugin.
Edit: Btw, if you wanna use buddypress login/profiles you can just use redirects.
Worked a charm for me.

Participanti have an idea that i want you to comment on. please respond.
modify searchform.php with the custom search code (sorry but i’m referring to Google here just for site wide search) having only single box+button only, i.e no dropdown menu.
modify search.php with the custom search result code, putting the results from the members, blogs, forums and groups search in their respective tabs with ajax.
This way user skips a step and also gets a better looking simple search box.
This shall do the trick like it did in WP and WPMU. Later on someone clever (like you and not me) could probably put a plugin to do that.
