In reply to: Forum Integration…
Peter Jeshua
ParticipantI have bbPress installed here: http://students.expression.edu/forums. I’m trying to integrate into BuddyPress. Where is “Forums Setup”? It’s absolutely not under my Site Admin sidebar in the dashboard for BuddyPress.

ParticipantUp until an hour ago, this thread had not seen any activity for over 7 months. There have been many significant changes to the BP codebase since then. So, whatever issues the OP may have had will surely not apply to the current BP version.
Arghagain, please read this thread for your information.
I’m closing this thread as it is too old to be of use for additional discussion.

ParticipantUpon looking to see if anyone has the same issue as me, I found this thread. Here is my thread https://buddypress.org/forums/topic/sitewide-activity-and-sitewide-post-problems
Have anyone finally fixes this yet?
My issue? New users sign up, their blog’s privacy is set to private even though in sign up page they set it to public. After first time log in, users can set the blog to public privacy again. It’s bothering me when blog is not public even though users want it to be when first sign up, this means when they write a blog post, it will not appear in sitewide posts widget! Also when other users visit a member that has private blog, there will be an error says that “[membername] has not created any public blog.”
I’m using buddypress 1.0.3 and wpmu 2.8.4a

peterverkooijen
ParticipantTo autogenerate a temporary username put this function in bp-custom.php:
function randomusername() {
$length = 10; //length of string
$start = 65; //Where to start from on ascii table
$end = 90; //where to end on the table
for ($k = 0; $k < $length; $k++){
$randomname .= strtolower(chr(round(rand($start, $end))));
}
return $randomname;
}Make this edit to the username input field on the form (hacking core file, should become easier in version 1.1):
<input name="user_name" type="text" id="user_name" value="'.$user_name = randomusername().'" maxlength="50" />Test it if you want; you’ll see a random string in the username field that will be replace by the autogenerated username based on fullname on activation.
You can hide the username field on the signup form, without getting error messages for not giving it proper TLC, by using this CSS trick.
That requires another core file hack, since you need to add a id like username-form-field. Again, should become easier in version 1.1.
My registration form is now:
Name:
Email address:
And that’s it! Everything works. Full name is available as first and/or last name. The URL is the full name lower case without spaces.

Only thing left to do is clean up the email messages etc. that still mention the username…

ParticipantTemporary solution how to customize registration form until 1.1 arrives, FYI and my own reference:
Changed this line in function bp_show_register_page() in functions.php in my template:
require ( BP_PLUGIN_DIR . '/bp-core/bp-core-signup.php' );to
require ( 'custom-signup.php' );Copied bp-core-signup.php to the template folder, renamed to custom-signup.php.
Go customize!

Unfortunately the custom fields are generated by yet another core function:
do_action( 'signup_extra_fields', $errors );This action is associated with the function xprofile_add_signup_fields in bp-xprofile/bp-xprofile-signup.php.
Copied the function to bp-custom.php, renamed action and function to custom_signup_extra_fields and custom_xprofile_add_signup_fields.
Used this CSS trick to hide the avatar upload. Will use the same trick to hide the username field.

ParticipantThat is a hard one to advise you on. But, read this thread — especially the two posts by Andy (the 4th and 16th posts). Perhaps that will give you sufficient information to make up your mind.

ParticipantErich73.. this may be a worpressMU issue and someone suggested there was already a TRAC for it. In my case, when someone registers and decides to create a blog, the system allows them to do 2 things: they have control over their own blog… and then they are also able to get into the main blog ADMIN (which is yours) allowing them only to submit postings. So in essence, the posting section of the super-Admin is enabled, though it is moderated, so you can decide to post it on front page. So Andrea_r was very kind to post a reply to my crazy FUD on the WordPressMU site but I have not checked it… anyway, here is the link: https://mu.wordpress.org/forums/topic/13936

John James Jacoby
KeymasterProvided you have wildcard subdomains allowed in your installation, then yes this could be possible with some modification to both BP and your .htaccess rules. Similar to how http://support.wordpress.com/ works with the forum as a subdomain in addition to user blogs being subdomains too.

Participant==bugs==
I suggest using trac for any bugs.
==user blogs & design==
User blogs are run by MU. If you want to retain a ‘similar’ design you could:
- draft a wp theme using similar colors etc…
- perhaps use a global footer or manually add in some sidebar widgets to force show some site-wide bp content
- flag this theme as the default
- flag this theme as the only theme ‘turned on’ via site-wide admin
==1 Package==
I agree, yet also disagree on your suggestion.
It wold be very efficient to have a turn-key bundle. It would surely make many people’s lives easier. However to do so now would be very difficult for the existing devs. Now it absolutely doesn’t stop anyone else from doing it however.
Having a bundle offered by the .org sends the message that all apps are 1 wholly integrated unit. That will also require webserver, php, mysql integration for a turnkey solution (how many times do we see “i need help with X re-write”.) Also on support, this type of product would deserve a single forum, a single user group, plug-in pages, etc… At the moment It’s now quite there yet. As I understand it, this is a goal for the .org long term. Not to sure about the backend integration however.
As you, I also see the many frustrations which users do experience. I try to help support the community as much as possible, may it be cross app integration, patches, other info, and in some cases monetary and personnel donations to many of the backends I just described.
This is what makes open source great, it allows users such as yourself who come up with an idea which benefits the community to start working on it. I no doubt believe a project such as this would get support from various existing communities and users.
Go for it!

KeymasterI’m using bpGroups and first of all you should follow the instructions properly.
Make sure your files are in the right directories.

Also, because you’re using deep integration, you’ll need to make the following changes:
In oci_bp_group_forums.php, around line 30 change:
require_once(ABSPATH . WPINC . '/class-IXR.php');to this:
if (!defined(BBDB_NAME))
require_once(ABSPATH . WPINC . '/class-IXR.php');In oci_bb_group_forums.php, around line 30 change:
require_once( BACKPRESS_PATH . '/class.ixr.php' );to this:
if (defined(BACKPRESS_PATH))
require_once( BACKPRESS_PATH . '/class.ixr.php' );August 17, 2009 at 10:08 pm #51184In reply to: P2 Theme As The Wire/Wall?

amen! and add bbforums activity to the wire too.,

Participantyes RAY, ok, I understand, working on bp for hours each day and get confused with silly things sometime, sometimes solutions are very easy.
I actually deleted the links manually from the theme files, but yes, I do see it now. Thought by disabling bp component setup would disable forums all together

And thank you Gerikg!
Yes, I think it is much more clean to have forums and groups separated. Let groups do what they want there, right? They have the wire and the group blogs (with bp 1.1 hopefully).
It would off course be so cool to have wires supporting videos and images. Hopefully someone comes with a plugin for that soon!

InactiveSorry, i think, i posted my question in the wrong Forum. WPMU-Forums would be a better place for this. By the way i found a solution for my kind of problem: This WPMU-Plugin “Menus” allows the admin to turn on and off all standard functions of the WP Admin-Panel .
Greets,
D.

ParticipantI decided to do the same thing. Since it will be too confusing to have both working at the same time and having a millions users creating their own forum category. I create the forums I need and deleted all the groups and let the users have their group fun.

KeymasterDo what gerikg said.
Login to your WPMU backend and navigate to “BuddyPress > Component Setup”.
Check “Disabled” for “bbPress forums” and you should be good to go!
*The one thing that probably has you confused is you need to login to your bbPress admin area and manually delete your existing group forums.

If you’re using forums separately, I would suggest using the following plugin to output your latest forum discussions:

ParticipantOk, I did not explain this well. I want members to continue creating and participating groups. I want them to write on the group wall and want to use the group blog plugin. I do not want the group forum feature.
In my case, I already have 26 groups and will probably end up with hundreds of groups within 3-4 months. This messes the bbpress forum pages with hundreds of forums created!
I also want to keep bbpress forums as simple as possible (up to 15 forum topics).
Having said that, is it possible to disable group forum feature but keep bbpress forums without editing core files? If it is necessary to edit the core files, can someone help find the simplest solution?

ParticipantHi Korhan,
In these thread the user states that some items failed to work:
https://buddypress.org/forums/topic/buddypress-103-with-wpmu-284a#post-22006
I just installed 2.8.4a and would like to install for the first time BP 1.0.3
Don’t want to install BP until make sure it will work. If I install BP and fails to work, could it be a problem to Deactivate it?
Thanks.
