ParticipantThanks for the suggestions, Steve. The funny thing is, I have a featured image for every post and by default, my theme puts it at the top of the page. So it’s the first piece of media in the post, but for some reason, BP goes directly for the video that’s embedded. I don’t get it. What confuses me even more is the peeps that create BP and run these forums choose not to help.
I definitely appreciate you reaching out. I’ll look into some of the stuff you suggested.
Thanks again

ParticipantOkay, I have not really solved the problem, but I’m trying a new install in a folder called ‘community.’ Maybe this will be less confusing for the system than having a folder called ‘members.’
So far it is working, though I’m just getting started. Before installing and activating BuddyPress I made sure registration is open and I created a page called ‘welcome’ and added my content. I switched the theme to 2013–because the horizontal nav menu feels less confusing to me since that is what I am used to.
Before installing and activating BuddyPress the ront page shows the welcome page!
YAY
After installing, activating and going through the configuration steps for BuddyPress the front page shows the welcome page!
YAY!So perhaps not a resolution to the other address where wordpress is installed in the folder called ‘members,’ but it works so far at this other location.
That doesn’t mean the issue is due to the folder being named ‘members.’ I did some steps in a better order this time–liek remembering to turn on registrations before installing BuddyPress. So when I went to view the core pages, both activate and register were already created–previously I had to add them myself.
My next step is to slowly begin adding and activating the other plugins–testing between each.
I think naming the folder community might be better anyway. I might move my forum to it if I switch to Simple:Press and then my community will truly be there, whereas originally it was only going to be paying members other than front page type access.

ParticipantI made some progress and am essentially trying to do the following:
When users click on the “Forum” link on my navigation bar it takes them to http://dentalstudentmastermind.com/forums/ . I would like this feature to only be available for users that are logged in, I would like users who are not logged in to be redirected to http://dentalstudentmastermind.com/wp-login.php?redirect_to=http%3A%2F%2Fdentalstudentmastermind.com%2Fwp-login
I know this can be done in the functions.php file, I am using a child theme on top of divi with access to a child functions.php file.
Thanks

ParticipantThank you! Is there anything in the buddypress settings that can make all the forums private? For example, if the click on the forums link then they cannot see any of the forums until the login.

Participant@thatmtnman – sounds to me that you just have not played with a few different themes and changing some widgets – that would do about everything you are saying from what I gather. Should be pretty easy to come up with what you are talking about with just some basic theme modifications – a little css color changes and different widgets in the sidebars.
“dying to see how you did it” – I think the site you are talking about just added a bbpress forums plugin and added some topics to the sidebar.
“BP might not be able to handle a high traffic site…” – handles a small site on a shared server fine – handles a site with 10,000 members on a dedicated server just fine (even sharing that dedicated with a dozen other wp and wp-multisite and bunch of other fair traffic sites – so I don’t think that would be an issue.

ModeratorIs there a way to connect my lessons to BuddyPRess?
Probably, but there are too variables in your questions:
– what does ‘connect’ my lessons mean?
– what is a gamification plugin?
– how are you dripping?btw – Those questions are rhetorical.
Unless somebody here has the same theme / plugin setup as you ( doubtful ), your chances of getting answers are slim to none.
Unless you are a developer, you’ll probably need to hire one to create the experience you desire.
And it sounds like a fairly large job.
You can post job listings here.July 10, 2015 at 6:06 am #241666Rollercoasterider

Re: Pretty Permalinks
I think I was getting mixed up with pretty urls at my smf forum which were a disaster. When I moved my blog I had to change embedded links and that was a nightmare and I was thinking it was due to pretty permalinks since ?I had a nightmare changing links at the forum as well. But my blog does use pretty permalinks and I have them set up on this other WP install as well.I have just disabled all plugins–checking in between deactivations occasionally. I deactivated Simple:Press last and before that the logout link was still going to the forum index and now it just goes to the members page which is still acting as the front/home page even though I have the page titled HOME selected as being the front page–I checked this again after deactivating all the other plugins.
But partway through I did notice a message only on the members page shown as a small pop-up ONLY when I click chrome in my footer bar and see all the open window options. When I choose to view the wondow in full the message disappears.
<br/> <b>Warning</b>:strstr() [<ahref=’function.strstr’>function.strstr ]: Empty delimiter in <b>/home/…wp-content/plugins/buddypress/bp-core/bp-core-filters.php</b> on line <b>781</b> Members | – Google Chrome
I had to take a screen shot of it just to have enough time to read it because the pop-up didn’t stay very long and I had to type it manually here, so I might have messed up the spacing.
The activity, profile, notifications and settings links on the menu go to the same file not found message as before.
My next step will be to uninstall and reinstall through cpanel or ftp. But first I’ll wait and see if anyone else has ideas and come back to it tomorrow.

ParticipantAbout the bbpress error:
https://bbpress.org/forums/topic/minor-debug-notice-with-buppypress-version-2-2-beta/Notice are less important.
See on respective wplms-assignments and vibe-customtypes support forums how to repair. If you’re on a production site, deactivate debug mode in wp-config and the mesaages will disappear.
And try to be carefull: never publish your server root path on a public forum.

Participant@kakumeionline – if your post had three links in it – it will be held for moderation and not appear unless someone approves it.
If your post did not have three or more links in it – then I think akismet has flagged your ip addy as a spammer perhaps – and it got sent to the spam box.
Sometimes adding certain words like “how to add a field for users to choose their S3X, and if they are L3sbian, G@y Trans – will keep a post from saving I think.
Random thoughts from an end user – I don’t really know how the internals of this BP dot org really work (not a forum moderator or anything)
So these are my guesses

you’re on BuddyPress support forum. But BP hasn’t a BuddyPress Course Stats widget.

ParticipantI see how you are using groups – so it does appear that links to them are easily discoverable from your public facing pages.
If you do a view source and look at your code for each of your groups, you will notice that the page title is exactly the same for all of your groups ( <title>Activities – Freaky Rivet</title> ) – and there is no meta name description =
Two major issues for the big G.
Which version of buddypress are you using?
This problem concerns me so much that I have kept one of my sites with an older version of buddypress (2.2.3.1 ) with the cobbled custom code I was able to get from wpmudev ( http://premium.wpmudev.org/forums/topic/bp-meta-tite-description-for-groups-and-members-pages#post-806736 ) – the cobbled code may work the newer version of bp – but things are quite confusing with how wp has changed up some of the title thing, and bp has it’s way of things and there are possible conflicts with priority or something..
The discussion on this trac ticket( https://buddypress.trac.wordpress.org/ticket/6107 ) says things have been “fixed” – I do appreciate the devs working on it a bit – but I have a feeling the fix is more of a “make it work in a semi-okay way with a couple of setups” – not much as far as giving users real control over the titles and descriptions.
I am guessing people will point to theme designers to hook this up, and they will point to “we use wordpress’s suggested way of title-ing (wp the title or whatever) – and so it’s wp/bp issue, and descriptions should be handled my an seo plugin – but given that bp’s pages are pseudo pages without any taxonomy registered, it appears that yoast and others have so desire to work with it.
This is my current understanding, and may be not 100% accurate – what I gather after posting many questions and issues relating to this in various places.
I’d pay someone to code a plugin that gives options for bp meta stuff like the suggestion I posted before, and give it to the community. If I could understand all the bp/wp code and php I’d gladly make it. It seems the BP coders are spread a bit thin, so I have no good options for fixing this issue at the moment.

ModeratorRight. So it looks as though it could be something the BuddyPress core team might need to look at. Can you open a Trac ticket explaining how the profile fields are displaying in the wrong order? If you could provide as much info as you can that’d be great.
You can use the same username and password as you use here in the forums.

Moderator“Your BuddyPress” is a place to show off your wonderful BuddyPress creations. Even though your Facebook group isn’t a BuddyPress creation, it is third-party and seems to be dedicated to BuddyPress so I thought this forum was a fitting place for your post.
Hope that explains why your topic was moved.

InactiveHello danbp,
So far i understand you use bbPress and now you want a members directory, and eventually some additionnal fields on user’s profiles. And most of this should be private or “members only”, right ?
>> Correct, combined with private bbpress forums on a website with also public content.I have set the “members” page I created as private, but it is still displayed when I go on the page as a logged out user. Why is that so?
Would it work if I would not connect the “members” page with BuddyPress in the settings, set the page to private and pull the dynamic content for the members list by a stortcode?I can read into the codex of course, but do I need to learn to code to use BuddyPress?

ParticipantHi @nmschaller,
bbPress is a separate plugin and BuddyPress doesn’t manage bbPress. For questions about forum settings, you can use the bbPress support.
When you use BP groups component, you can add a forum to each of them. In this case only, you have to install bbPress. Of course you can also use bbPress as standalone on a BP install, or use bbPress with WordPress, without BP.
BP doesn’t use “pages” but templates, and the only pages created during installation are in for internal purpose. The “member” page is used to show the member directory, but also profiles or members activities. This dynamic content is displayed on different templates, depending the context, and using WP’s page system to fire all that via a same page slug (aka internal path).
your-site/members/some/thing/where/some/thing/is using his own template part displayed on “members page”.So far i understand you use bbPress and now you want a members directory, and eventually some additionnal fields on user’s profiles. And most of this should be private or “members only”, right ?
The main problem is that you want some custom behave that need some knowledge (you seem to have), but you cannot edit functions.php Unfortunately, this is the place where to add customisation. And what to tell about bp-custom, which is another crucial cusmisation file.
You want to drive and have no steering wheel ! Annoying… 😉
The question is Do you need BuddyPress or can you use another solution ? 🙂
Depends your project, really. Members directory or extended profiles can be done with separate plugins.
Read here:
http://chrislema.com/best-wordpress-membership-plugin-2014/Or digg into the Codex if you decide to use BuddyPress.

ParticipantSorry for you, but this is a common open-source situation.
When you want something specific, you have to made it yourself or try to find another solution.
If you don’t know how to achieve what you want, you can learn or hire somebody to make it for you. This is only a support forum for BuddyPress maintained by volonteers, not a school or a ready to use solution platform for special demands. Hope you undestand ! 😉
